I know what you mean.  It does really come down to individual tastes.  There are some singers whose voices others hate, and those singers' voices don't trouble me: Tom Waits, Morrissey, David Byrne, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Dylan.  I don't even mind Billy Corgan's or Win Butler's (from Arcade Fire) voices - as long as I don't hear those two very often.  In high school, there was just this attitude among people who listened to a lot of what would later be called "prog rock", that they were more sophisticated than those of us who listened to The Beatles, The Stones, The Who, Lou Reed, or especially to the early punk rock bands.
Some Bjork stuff is okay once in a while.

Definitely a matter of taste to be sure. For some reason none of those people with the funny voices ever bothered me, Geddy Lee, Neil Young, Anderson and so forth. I like them all, but certainly get why some don't.  I mean some people like Bjork so vatta u gonna do?{#Lol}  And this coming from someone who likes Yoko Ono!!{#Lol}
