I envy anyone who can speak more than one language, my wife is a 6 x polyglot. Of course the other end of the scale is the US who speak what they think is English, but they have made up words, pronunciations and spellings as they go for two or three hundred years, and now profess their way is right/better/their own!  It'd be funny if it wasn't affecting and confusing the rest of the english speaking world.

Enough bigotry for ya?

Never attribute to malice that which is better explained by incompetence.

It's less about bigotry than laziness.  American school kids today are far less encouraged to learn a second language than their international counterparts are encouraged to learn English.  I don't see too much "professing" of what is "right/better", just an organic shift due to how much US culture is exported via popular media and the Internet.

I hear the music, think what the rating will be and then check the RP-website. Hardley ever do my estimated ratings differ more than 0.2 from the actual rating.

On the other hand it's not that difficult. It's nearly always somewhere between 4.8 and 5.8

Wonder what the problem is, since the mix is supposed to be World/Etc. Either some people find out they really don't like World music, or they don't realize that they're not in the Main, Mellow, or Rock mixes.

Also not sure why the name Eclectic mix was changed to World/Etc -- is it because it sounded a little judgmental? I could see that one person's World music is another person's Eclectic, especially if one doesn't like the other...
Keep on rocking in the free world!
Not his best, anyway a great performer, RIP Rachid.

Excellent.  Merci infiniment Mme Bibeau!
Wow this is great! I heard it on the RP eclectic channel; wish it would move over to the main channel.

On first listening I award it an '8' which may go up after that. I love the arrangement, the voices, and the frenetic pace.

Wow, what an ignorant comment. I'm not a linguist but I believe that inflection is common to Arabic, Israeli, middle eastern speech. For those of you who know better, I apologize if I'm incorrect.

Agreed.  I give this a 7, I quite enjoy it.

I am surprised at all the '1's - I can't believe those are accurately attributed - it seems to me like the people who rate stuff on tripadvisor, amazon etc as only 1 star or 5 stars, with no graduation.

For me a '1' = 'make this stop, PSD, move on, my head is not functioning, aaargh, get it off'  (e.g. that godawful Marianne Faithful track which gets lots of airplay here).  Quite rare.

Notice that the USA is actually a minority listener if you take the rest of the world into account. Even Europe has more listeners than the USA.

Ha!

True, but the combined population of Europe is over twice that of the United States.

His voice sounds a bit like Sting.
I don't understand a lick of French, but I just like how this one sounds.

When I ran the lyrics through Google Translate, what came out wasn't terribly coherent.  Could one of our Francophone fellow listeners help us out here?
I first heard Rachid Taha while I was in Iraq - he was very popular with the young locals on my medical team. Great stuff, glad he's breaking out world-wide.

I dare say that the Middle Eastern rhythms and chords sounded more approriate here than they did in the Musa "City of Delusion" two songs previous.

Is it my idea or the tune in the background is the same as in Keny Arkana's "La Rage". Any idea if it is some kind of traditional melody?

Reading the previous post, perhaps most people are less tolerant of new, unfamiliar, challenging, foreign music.

Sad.

He doesn't seem to hold a grudge. I saw him and his band live a couple of years ago and they played (a very good version of) Rock the Casbah. Maybe to better claim it as his own?

Thanks for the anecdote, Poose - that's interesting. I quite like the sound of this band, and love the idea of Algerian funk-punk :). This is very RP. 7 from the exotically-minded Nottingham jury.
