How many lips, how many hands, have held you
Like I'm holding you tonight
Too many nights, staying up late,
Too much powder and too much paint
No you can't hide from the turning of the tide
Did they run their fingers up and down your shabby dress
Did they find some tender moment there in your caress
The boys all say "You look so fine"
They don't come back for a second time
Oh you can't hide from the turning of the tide
Poor little sailor boy, never set eyes on a woman before
Did he tell you that he'd love you, darling, for evermore?
Pretty little shoes, cheap perfume,
Creaking bed in a hotel room
Oh you can't hide from the turning of the tide
Did they run their fingers up and down your shabby dress
Did they find some tender moment there in your caress
The boys all say "You look so fine",
They don't come back for a second time
Oh you can't hide from the turning of the tide
Showing my ignorance here, I have never heard of Richard Thompson until it was played on here, in fact I thought Richard Thompson was John Boy from the Waltons until I googled, Love this guys voice, but looking at the other reviews it seems like it's either love or hate and no in-between, definitely love him here
Try 1952 Vincent Black Lightening epic saga
Terribly hit-and-miss artist. His great stuff is truly stellar. His mostly ho-hum stuff is like this.
I agree, except that this is absolutely not ho-hum. His early albums up to Mock Tudor are almost without exception wonderful, but of late the quality control seems to have waned ... or my tastes have changed ... or he's shifted direction. I've seen him live at least a dozen times but I don't think I'd make the effort now.
Leo Kottke's 'Louise'...tragic
A great song about a hooker in the finest Richard Thompson storytelling tradition. How about keeping the theme going for a few tracks and playing The Stranglers Princess of The Street and Joe Jackson's 50 Dollar Love Affair?

Well Stated!
Such a gifted performer. See him live if you get the chance. In addition to his insightful and pithy lyrics, RT is one of the most accomplished guitarists around. One of Englands' finest musicians, now resident on the West side of the pond. Our loss.
Has he managed to find a bit of the US that isn't on fire, or flooded, or is a gun toting trump supporting racist enclave? Miraculous if so.
and his voice is annoying .....and his face is too
...and he speaks so highly of your hollywood looks.

I love Richard' s voice can't stand Joni's.
RT Rocks
Irritating person? Have you met RT?
Weird.

how many good songs has Thompson wrote?
Just discovered Radio Paradise a couple of weeks ago. Third song to come up was another Thompson piece... That's when I decided to add Paradise to the bookmarks bar .
Never thought I'd hear Thompson on a 'mass appeal' kind of service.
A reason why RP is listed within the "alternative" list of radios in TuneIt ... and now enjoying Steve Ray Vaughan after Thompson, where else do you get this? C'mon guys and send your support to RP!!

What's a "Sringstein"?
Apparently words do fail you.
I'm not a Thompson fan, but I don't feel the need to call him a "twat".
As for Springsteen, he is one of the greatest writers/performers in the history of rock.
..... how can you compare a twat like Sringstein to Richard Thompson. Words fail me.
Springsteen wishes!
That particular brand of irony is his trademark. Welcome to our world.
No kidding. But, silly me, I detect a touch of sorrow in the lyrics, too.
Awesome album
But the cover art hasn't aged so well!!
WTF? Are you kidding?
Um, no!
Here's hoping it's a good one Bill/Rebecca? cheers!
Agree, great songwriting!
You win some, you lose some....with RP you win most of the time. If you don't like song A then chances are song B will kill you...so relax...let your friend listen and become a fan, it'll happen.
edit: and come on...Richard Thopson? He's amazing...
t-hee hee...
THIS is why RP implemented the "PSD" button. Also for most Dylan tunes.
I just don't get the appeal of this guy. Never will.

Lost count of the number of times we have seen him, solo ,duo, group or with a historical music group, he ALWAYS gives a superb performance.
You guessed I like him. 10++
Best concert I've ever been to....and I've been to ALOT!
It's definitely the vocals that grate on my nerves. I think he's an excellent songwriter/guitarist but I can't handle the voice. This from someone who loves Dylan, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen etc. Go figger.
Totally agree! He certainly tells a good story, and with guitar skill, too! (Well, Knopfler is another one, but he's in a different thread.)

Almost makes you forget its a record.
same here
It's ThomPSON not ThomAs(s)!
Catchy, but what's really the message of the (narrator of the) lyrics? "Your love life sucks according to my outside perspective", haha thank you. If only my dress wasn't as shabby!
Like many of RT's songs, it's like a short story: as I read it, he's singing about a "good-time girl" (or prostitute) whose looks and appeal are fading, and the poignancy of the depreciation of her currency. Thompson often sings about people on the margins of society - Down Where The Drunkards Roll, King of Bohemia, Beeswing - all examples of his extraordinary craft and art.
