Will you and your friend come around
Are you and your friend gonna get on down
Will you and your friend come around
Or are you and your friend gonna let me down

If you talk to one another
I'm a hungry man
Let me know one way or the other
So I can make my plans

Will you and your friend come around
Or are you and your friend gonna get on down
Will you and your friend come around
Or are you and your friend gonna get on down

I relive the situation
Still see it in my mind
You got my imagination
Working overtime

Baby, baby
Oh baby

Look up "tasteful" in the dictionary and you should find a pic of Mark playing his trusty Strat.

I can recite the lyrics of Industrial Disease, Tunnel of Love, Brothers in Arms and others by heart.  So, the answer is yes, I have.

No.  I was being wry, facetious, going against the grain of the obvious. In fact, Knopfler has been one of my very favorite musicians and composers since Making Movies.  The world is a lesser place without music of that caliber.

I Agree. Same here!
EXCELLENT!  Thanx RP!
What a great and wonderful tune! I am still sad about the thing, that i didn`t catch a ticket for their 1994/1995 Tour. I was 19 and thought "I´ll do it the next DS Tour!". You see my error!?  There was no more Dire Straits Tour after that!
I'm using this 'new' player with the new layout and wasn't sure about the floating slideshow at the top of every song at first. "I just wanna' see the album cover" says my grumpy old man self. Then I figured out that if I click on the album name it gives the cover and a bunch of other info. Meanwhile a great photo of a couple of little girls comes on while he's singing "..you and your friend" and I laughed and said "Okay, I get the slide-show thing now".

Of course now that we have the answer, we have to find out what the question is.
Stupendous!

Whatever he's like as a person, and I can only go on hearsay, he's an incredible guitarist.

Insufficient emojis for this...
He got the answer to What's The Meaning of Life and is sharing it with us through his guitar.
Go see him live if you can it’s always astounding to me how effortless his playing is

That quote, or some variant is often attributed to Claude DeBussy, apparently unconfirmed.  Miles Davis had a similar sentiment:  "It's not the notes you play, it's the notes you don't play."

This morning, I searched out a YouTube hosted copy of Sky Arts' Guitar Stories featuring Mark Knopfler.

Brilliant stuff.

Smooth, simple, mellow & crafty...sedeenuf.
My only signature track for me  and my close friends. I usually crank it up when it comes up here
All I want in life is to be able to play guitar like that.  Is that too much to ask for?  Ha!

Heard this from the other room, and thought "Oh, this guy wants to be Mark Knofler".
                                     Duh
The whole album is worth listening to. I saw them live back in the day in Albany's "Knickerbocker Arena" ... Great concert! {#Cheers}

This is just a flat-out great overall album, I like the whole thing.

It all sounds the same to me too. Which is splendid.  Knopfler's sound is instantly recognizable, very evocative and always great listening.
Maybe my favorite chord progression ever.  For some reason I had only rated this a 9; silly me.

Keep playing Mark Knopfler, Bill.

Perfect for a Sunday morning when it rolled round my way.....
Great tune from the Straits. Thx Bill.
One of the things I love about RP is the fact that Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits are played so regularly! Ah.
Unplugged the speakers, click on the headphones.....aaaaahhhhhhhh......bliss

Rascal:

Indeed.  You hear it, see it or experience it on rare occasions.  It's the sound of transcendence.  From the wellspring of the creation, to the instrument that manifests it out to the rest of us, transcendence occurs when conduit (the artist) between that wellspring and the instrument effecting the communication becomes so transparent that the flow is impeding not at all.  You're listening to an aural epiphany courtesy of Mark K.  And I, for one, am grateful for the experience.

Just some thoughts.

My fave DS album, gosh that's hard ... Today it's "Love Over Gold" (Japanese pressing).
This may be the best song they ever did. Hauntingly good.

OK... I thought I was tired of listening to these guys... And now... Reminds me of why I liked em then and now... Thanks
Not their best. I do kinda like it....but blahhhhh.
These guys can be so good, but also so freakin' BORINGLY STRAIGHT!!!! at times.

this track is an example of the former, thank goodness. If only they had never gone into that pop bullshit.

anyway,8, I guess.

If this doesn't make you want to turn up the stereo, I dunno what to think aboutcha'. :-)

Love that guitar.  Gotta catch Knopfler live before it's too late.

Love this whole album.  I discovered it when in grad school in 1995-97, and it was pretty much the soundtrack to which I did most of my schoolwork during that time.  This brings me back.  Thanks Bill.

Amazing chord progression; masterful guitar!  I love Mark's music and this may be my favorite Dire Straits album...it's tough to pick one though.

True... but we know you need to mope mumble now and again, disposable one.

Love this music!
Love, love, love the music behind this album.  Very atmospheric.
great songs.
As for me i like the versatile aspects of Dire Straits, e.g. I love this song or Where do you think you're going, but for me Money for nothing is a great song too.
But I only listen to CDs where their music is definitely fantastic .... as much as their live performance sucks ! Mark looks like he's bored on stage and his voice is not good live (please don t kill me {#Mrgreen} )

My favorite album from Mark is Sailing to Philadelphia ... especially Silvertown blues ! yeah baby yeah !

Love this track, but it's not suitable for all moments... Really need to be in the mood for this one, but now i am... {#Whistle}
I agree with most people below, there are some things Mark (Dire Straits) didn't have to do, or even shouldn't have... Money For Nothing and Twisting By The Pool are the two best examples i think...

Especially if you think about the major differences between the first two albums and the last two albums... On one hand the major differences are what makes this band so versatile and great, on the other it comes with certain risks....

This one, definitely a 9!
Very hard to leave this nice set this morning!!
Love this band...that soft organ, tight bass and drums, and of course Knopfler's guitar...
This is lovely, moody and evocative of the time for me. 8 -> 9

Typical mopey maudlin mumbling.

I would love hearing these guys play anything (except Money for Nothing)  Mark has such a great voice and plays the guitar like he's making love to it.

Sorry if I'm repeating myself, but that was the only disappointment of Clapton's 25th Anniversary Tour, on which Knopfler joined him. They played a great set of classic Clapton from every band/era, then for the last encore they played Money For Nothing, which was fine, but if they were gonna do one of Mark's songs, there are so many other Dire Straits tunes I would have loved to hear Clapton and Knopfler trade licks on.

like this song, but it sounds very similar to another track of theirs

Its all in your head. {#Arrowd} personal preference and all. Brothers in Arms? F*ckin' brilliant work! Industrial Disease? Relevant , catchy (ummm... was that a pun?) tune.

But what would we think now of Dire Straits if they'd have called it a day after Love Over Gold?
"Money for Nothing", "Industrial Disease" and "Twisting by the Pool" made me cringe, but that didn't change my opinion of Dire Straits.  I still think they were an amazing band and still love most of their music.
A case of an album (or two?) too far?

Let's face it, this one isn't too great- this song is an exception, as perhaps are a couple of others. But what would we think now of Dire Straits if they'd have called it a day after Love Over Gold?

First album of J.J.Cale influences, second finding a true voice, third with a cracking first side (this was the age of the L.P., remember, kids) and a regrettable last song. Love Over Gold ushered in the age of the CD, brought us up to date with what things should sound like (and left us with a cracking Dylan pastiche, It Never Rains).

What if we didn't have to deal with the hangover of Brothers In Arms, with its mawkish sentimentality and its heavy-handed politics (and Sting)? (O.k., even I can admit that some of it is not all that bad, but the stomach turns at the majority...)

What if we didn't have then to deal with a (long awaited, quickly forgotten) follow-up?

What if?

Gods, no.

But at least we wouldn't have to look at those terrible album covers

Like that soulful guitar. Agree a bit different than typical Knopfler. Nice.

As always...Dire straits = superb.
Absolutely perfect follow up!
If you like the guitar, this whole album is very good.
Thanks for the new tune. The guitar voices evoke contemplative scenes that speak to his skills in writing movie scores. Thanks Bill
Usually, I'm not a big fan of these guys, but this song was quite nice.
Quite different for a Knopfler song. Outstanding, hope I can get it from I-tunes
5 ratings already. I think I'll actually wait until I hear the whole song before rating it. It's not doin' too bad IMO so far :)
