Girl, you're looking fine tonight
And every Fella HAS got you in his sights
What you're doing with a clown like me
Is surely one of life's little mysteries
So tonight I'll ask the stars above
How did I ever win your love?
What did I do, what did I say
To turn your angel eyes my way?
Well I'm the guy who never learned to dance
I never even got one second glance
Across the crowded room, that was close enough
I could look, but I could never touch
So tonight I'll ask the stars above
How did I ever win your love?
What did I do, what did I say
To turn your angel eyes my way?
Don't anybody wake me if this is a dream
'Cause she is the best thing that's ever happened to me
All you fellas yeh! you can look all you like
But this girl you see, she's leaving HERE with me tonight
And there's just one more thing I need to know
If this is love then why does it scare me so
Must be something only you can see
But girl, I feel it when you look at me
So tonight I'll ask the stars above
How did I ever win your love?
What did I do, what did I say
To turn your angel eyes my way?

I like Jeff Healy's...sounds better to me, and reminds me of Roadhouse, & Patrick Swayze being nice "until it's time to not be nice", iirc.
WTF?

Music for adults, sweet and heartfelt. You don't find many albums that consistently great from start to finish as this, and especially "Slow Turning." A "9" I think, no pretensions to godliness...
Good version of a mediocre song.
I don't think I've ever rated a John Hiatt song less than an 8. I realize it's an acquired taste but I find his voice the definition of soulful. Having seen him twice in concert from very close to the stage, I'll also say that he's a great guitar player as well.
I usually like this guy, but I just can't stand this song. But this is better than the version that Jeff Healey did, I really really disliked that song.
Enjoying this!

Er, so if one appreciates Tom Waits' "...razors.." voice and doesn't like Hiatt(never mind a little thing called opinion), that person is a "hypocrite"? Do YOU like every artist on RP whose voice may be roughened or less than a sweet polished tenor?
Gee, did you have a bad day or something? Of course you can have an opinion, but I don't have to agree with it. Isn't that the purpose of these comment pages? Sharing opinions or discussion? In my little thing called an opinion, those that slam on Hiatt and praise Waits based on vocal ability alone are hypocrites. You don't have to agree. I happen to like all types of singers, but I don't rate or judge a song on the vocals alone. Waits is a fantastic songWRITER, but I hate his voice. Does that answer YOUR question?

Agreed. People on here stand up and applaud Tom Waits who sounds like he has swallowed a bucket of razors, but they jump all over this guy.
Ok, all hypocrites! Out of the RP pool!

Maybe it's my mood today. I don't know the composer, don't know much of Hiatt's music. But a cover and a badly treated one at that. Hiatt, show some originality with it.
I, for one, am uninspired (except to post a complaint).
Oooohhh, what a great song to swing to!!!!!

I agree with just about everyone here who thinks that Hiatt's songs sound better sung by anyone else. I just think his voice is "not serious". Of course that could be the Disney influence working against him.
Was he the opening act for Cheap Trick? ;)
Must confess ignorance that he wrote this...I only knew the Jeff Healey version and never paid attention to the liner notes. Quite nice, but it seems strained for his range, almost like he wrote the song for someone else to sing.
THIS is why I listen to RP. I've heard this at his live shows but never been able to find it recorded, except the lame top 40 version by whoeveritwas.
Thanks BillG
To the negative commenters on this one--Whatever!! John is the man and his versions of his own songs are ALWAYS the best versions!! So just get a clue or something already.
Sadly, this version is terribly off-key. I don't really like any oversion of this song though.
Sorry, but I prefer Jeff Healey's version. Nice to know Hiatt wrote it, but, like Dylan, probably shouldn't sing his own songs...

I too was surprised to find that he wrote every song on this CD. Is Budokan? his best?
Try - Slow Turning - Every track a great one. This one always goes on the road with me especially if I'm driving south.

I also didn\'t realize that this is Hiatt\'s song.
In this case, Hiatt, unfortunately, is a better composer than a singer. He\'s clearly struggling to hit the higher notes in this recording.
I prefer Healey\'s version. His voice is better.
It happens occasionally that a cover is better than the original, at least to many people. Nothing wrong with that.
THE...THE version I waited for literally for years. The version on his best of collection really shines. And I do like Jeff Healey...sort of...a great guitar player he is. Whatever, the music, the music. Know wut I mean? It seems at least to my heart mind and ears John poured his soul in this. And..who is Justin Timberlake? Is that a street name?...heh heh...
Sweet song
Great emotion in his voice.

I agree... Hey did you hear Justin Timberlake has a new album out?
This song is godlike. I mean it. :)
Sir John

Love John Hiatt but I can't get Jeff Healey out of my head when I hear this. I don't like hearing Jeff Healey in my head (or otherwise).
Not as good as the Jeff Healey Band. However, good none the less...
always liked his throaty voice. a hard rocker when he wants to be, this song showcases his mellow balladeer side.
