Late at night, I'm goofy like a clown
Early in the mornin', I'm just tryin' to live it down
Late at night, I do just like I please
Early in the mornin', I get down upon my knees

Late at night, I held the truth in my hand
Just like a little shiny jewel
Early in the mornin', I look in the mirror
I see the same old fool

I'm praying, "Lord, you got to help me now
Lord, you got to help me now"
I'm praying, "Lord, you got to help me now
Lord, you got to help me now"

Late at night, all my neighbors come to call
Early in the mornin', I hear them bangin' on the wall
Late at night, I blow in like a hurricane
Early in the mornin', it's just a steady, steady rain

Oh, late at night, I'm a rippin' and a roarin'
Enough to wake the dead
Early in the mornin', well, I can barely find the strength
To raise my aching head

I pray, "Lord, you got to help me now
Lord, you got to help me now"
I'm praying, "Lord, you got to help me now
Lord, you got to help me now"

Late at night

The slide guitar sounds a lot like Sonny Landreth. Dig.

Please see my edit, audiophelia: it's all good stuff! The accordion riffs, for instance, could easily fit into tunes from the swamp fifty miles east of the Big Easy.

Saw these guys live at the Old Town School Folk Festival. They rock!
Oh, man, some thumping backbeat and greasy guitar - makes me wish all the more it was Friday night and I was doing some 12-oz curls down at the "health bar" . . .

Edit: Some overlap and flavoring is certainly there, as with most Louisiana styles, apologies for my overly enthusiastic correction. If it sounds good, it is good!

Just back from Carnival, this is so in the groove.
Oh, man - I just LOVE Subdudes!  A little Little Feat, a little Cale, a little Subdudes, maybe throw in some Leon Russell... I could coast for days on a playlist like that. {#Sunny}

You should really go back to brats and polkas and leave real music to adults. When and if you get a clue, let us know, okay?

Ahhhh.
The jukebox at the Chartroom bar, corner of Chartres and Bienville, in the French Quarter.
Played this and the Radiators in bunches two weeks ago.

Makes me think of Anders Osborne. Pretty good.
Love the subdudes! Thanks for playing them. :)
There is a very cool version of this done by The Iguanas as well. That's the first one I'd heard and it's much more mariachi Tex-Mex sounding.

I remember watching this band play in an old dusty barn in Texas about 20 years ago.  I was amazed that they didn't have a drum set, just a tambourine that sounded better than any drum set I had ever heard.

Long live the dudes.

Subdudes - Late At Night
J.J. Cale - After Midnight Naturally
Creedence Clearwater Revival - The Midnight Special

Man it's 11.00 in the morning!

ATTA BOY TOMMY!  dis ain't no monkey ranch.

First time I am hearing this Subdudes,{#Clap}

great tune!  Love that nawlins feel.  {#Bananajam}  One thing  -this song isn't off "Annuciation" - it's from "Primitive Streak".  Had chance to see them at a bar in Phoenix a few years ago - hot damn!
More Zydeco!
YES YES YES!!! More Subdudes please!

Funky slide.  Nice.

love that slide guitar keeps that night time theme goin' and I don't have this song, gonna have to rectify that, not sure why its rated so low ya'll listenin' to the same song I did?

Yahoo!  I get to hear it today!  I must be living right, better go get a lottery ticket.
I believe one of the band members has a brother who is in the Radiators, another fine band.

They have a library of great music, "Poor man's paradise" is worth having a listen to.
Well that's the polite gringo version of things, gabacho. Tranquilo senor estadounidense, I didn't call you any bad names! UltraNurd wrote:

Dude. The term in question was America, not Americans. Americans are indeed from the U.S.A. They are also from the rest of the Americas--North, South, Meso, and Central. Except in the rest of the hemisphere, the residents have the decency to call themselves by their nationality. All your list proves is how good the U.S.A. is at taking credit that should be shared with others. Bix a wilik le ba'alo' waa? (yep, that's an AMERICAN language) lwilkinson wrote:

I will point out that, in at least Mexican Spanish, the term for people from the USA is "estadosunidenses", or roughly, United States-ians :oP. "America" and "The United States" (heck, we sometimes lay claim to just "The States") are commonly used shorthands for "United States of America", which is the official internationally recognized country name. I would agree that most English speakers use America in the shorthand sense, and would specify South or North when referring to one of the continents, or "The Americas" when referring to both collectively.

Nice harmonies, great accordian. nice song. But not nearly as good as their most recent Album Street Symphony. THAT one was called the album of the century (so far) by one of the Sound and Vision reviewers and I happen to agree. Nothing from that one here yet. BTW, probably the best live band I have ever seen. A real blast.

Actually, I am American. What I meant was: This (to me) sounds like the kind of music I picture dudes with mullets drinking Budweiser to. Just my take on it...didn't mean to offend anyone or come off as some kind of conservative ass. Cheers!
I couldn't get into Knuckleheads Saloon (in KC late Oct- early Nov)to see them...sold out.I should have arrived earlier...general admission..my bad.Anybody see that show?

I think it's more due to the fact that our worst corporate-driven crap is more frequently exported, and not as much the cooler less "mainstream" stuff.

the malone brothers are both awsome guitar players. check out the radiators for more new orleans boogie.
Nice!
One more reason to restore New Orleans to it's former glory.

"All-American" rock "sound" reminds me of when my wife (E. European) criticizes something in WallMart that is "European design" U jackass I'll apologize in the a.m. Love you man. Wank.
He said "I like it"!
Ooh, gotta love those Dudes!

Well this does not suck at all (I gave it an 8), but neither does Kraftwerk. They were decades ahead of their time in the 70's and 80's, and still create great music. They were fantastic on 2004 tour.
Very Ry Cooder, but not quite as good!

I've heard OF the Subdudes, but never heard them before. These guys are good. 8.
this band is definitely not overrated. i've seen them live a few times and that changed my perception. just recently got a LIVE subdudes cd on yahoo. great find, great buy. they are lots of fun.
nice tune, I always liked the band, new orleans R&B is my favourite genre, but ... isn't this band overrated?

Reminds me of Buckwheat Zydeco ... and that's not a bad thing.
I loved this so much I went to Amazon and ordered the CD... interesting that the "used" prices are all the same (or more!) than the "new" price... an indication of its popularity, I suppose!
Ahhhh.... Just what the doctor ordered!

Worth the trip to see them. I've seen them twice, once in a front row table -- way kewl. Heard 2nd-hand that a recent concert didn't go so hot. Must be difficult to keep that fresh sound going all the time.
Damn! How's a person supposed to work?!
Thanks for honoring The Big Easy today, Bill! They need all the mercy they can get!

did their lineup change? do they still have the drummer who seemingly creates all the percussion from a tambourine or something? someone explain this to me...
Their lineup only changed slightly. The former bass player Johnny Ray Allen left and was replaced mainly by Jimmy Messa. Jimmy also plays some Rythm guitar. When he does, the bass is played by Tim Cook. Tim also plays percussion and adds some sweet harmonies to the mix. The rest of the band is the same: Tommy Malone on lead guitar and vocals (this is Dave Malone of the Radiators "Little brother"), John Magnie on accordian, keyboards and vocals, and Steve Amedee on the drums. Steve is the tamborine percussionist you are wondering about. However, he does have a somewhat abbreviated drumkit that he uses along with the tamborine. The tamborine he invented himself. It has a pick-up mounted in it and he gets some very unique sounds out of it. I go to 40+ shows a year of various bands, and these guys are probably the most fun to watch, although Little Feat is on the top of my list also.

Nobody else plays these guys. Wha a shame. Thanks RP!
Mixed emotions about this one...on one hand, it sounds like Sonny Landreth accompanying modern-day Elton John with a broken hand. On the other, it's an original sound and a catchy tune. Needs another listen, I think. Pretty good.
Love that Guitar!!
YeeHa! More please. Cool sound

We saw Los Lobos and the Subdudes at Bridgeton Folk Fest in Jersey last summer. great show!
You can appreciate this music or not (so much), but apart from that it's just the best of its genre.
Ahh, SUBDUDES... Cool name , Cool sound, Cool... A 9.
Going to see them in Chicago on March 18 at the House of Blues. Can't wait!

Yes. On and off throughout the year. (I'd give you more specific dates for your area, but you are so generous with geographical info.) Best to check their website.
What a great Looziana band. The amount of SOUND with an accordian and a guy banging on a cymbal with a drumstick. What a great show the 'dudes put on. Going to see one of them tonight playing with some other New Orleans guys.
Great to hear the Dudes are back. Does anyone know if they're touring??
Great to hear the Subdudes. This song was co-written by John Magnie of the Subdudes and Rod Hodges and Joe Cabral of the Iguanas, another fantastic New Orleans band. The Iguanas recorded this tune also, on an album that's now sadly out of print. I'm diggin' it!
