Yeah, dementia. 🤣🤣🤣 Excellent!
love the groove and of course the solos but he totally mailed in the lyrics on this one. I love Mark Knopfler the storyteller. This is more a mantra.
calling Elvis, is anybody home?
I like his solo stuff better than Dire Straits honestly
Awesome ... Mark at his best 🛐

I used to wonder why you guys play so much Mark Knopfler then a lightbulb turned on in my head because he is both a great guitarist and songwriter.  One of the greatest talents of the last 40 years.

doesn't hold true for the Dire Straits work.

For the doubters, go look at the lyrics for "Tunnel of Love",  "Telegraph Road", "Skateway". He may have tired of writing lyrics on this tune but not in the DS records.

There's a track Long Way from the Clyde that gets some play around these parts...by Mr. Knopfler...that will pretty much destroy this comment.

Consider yourself smote...

This sounds like one of the songs that never made the cut on the Brothers In Arms album 12 years previously.

It is a bit too formulaic "paint by numbers" effort from Mark Knopfler to my ears.

Just a 6 from me.

This song proves Chad Cromwell is technically the best drummer Mark ever had the pleasure to work with. After Mark's fourth solo album "Our Shangri-La" they parted ways, regrettably. Nowadays i believe Chad is Neil Young's primary drummer.

Cromwell is definitely a bad ass but go back and listen to some of the DS albums that Pick Withers plays on.  Withers is a bit more subtle but technical with a groove.

Let me know

Just this once, a MK song doesn't work for me.  But I'll keep listening, sure to love his next one.

Agreed, though I would also put up "Speedway at Nazareth" as a rebuttal to the lyric complaints, or any other song from that album.
I refuse to believe this was not originally a JJ Cale song.
"Getting pretty sick of this guy. If we want to hear a good guitarist, why aren't we listening to Leo Kottke?"

If we want to hear a good guitarist, why no Gov't Mule (Warren Haynes) on RT?

Does this guy ever make bad music? Solid 7.

I don't get this. Why is this better than a Chris Rea song? In fact, this is a Chris Rea song, no?

There's a lot of Mark Knopfler out there, but I'm wondering why. It fails to grow on me. Please tell me, what feature redeems this tune?

Maybe you missed the lyrics to this very song: "I don't wanna dream your dream."  He really doesn't care what you think; he's dreaming his own dream.
As Mark Knopfler songs go, this one's pretty so-so. Fortunately, so-so for him means a 7. Solid guitar work, and great musicianship by those with him in general (when isn't there?), but man, those lyrics!

Superb!!!

This song proves Chad Cromwell is technically the best drummer Mark ever had the pleasure to work with. After Mark's fourth solo album "Our Shangri-La" they parted ways, regrettably. Nowadays i believe Chad is Neil Young's primary drummer.

Great great guitar playing, the melody and lyrics, not so much though.
He's good but overrated. Great distinct style.
I get it...but never enough of it... more Knopfler!

The boy can lay down some licks.
I can say half of this album is great and the other half is hopeless! This is one of the best tunes.

I hope I can play rock and roll and blues (guitar) until I depart this earth.  Too many ballads bore me to tears.

What a load of hyperbolic crap. "Worst lyricist ever?"  Industrial Disease, What It Is, Tunnel of Love, Lady Writer... I think you may be neglecting to mention maybe 3,000 other song writers as "worst."

< Amen to that.  Worst lyricist ever, just play your guitar dude.  Maybe let somebody else write the lyrics from time to time.>

Knopfler - amazingly frustrating in the post-Dire Straits era. Loved Sailing to Philadelphia...bored by just about all the rest. Just when I think he's gonna put two or three high end tunes together, he mosies along with a heaping dollop of mood pieces that put me to sleep.  The, just when I am ready to write him off, he lays out some blistering guitar...but not often enough.  Maybe if he found some consistent musical partners whom he respected and would listen to for feedback to improve his songwriting....oh right....that was Dire Straits....

Maybe Sonny Landreth needs another guitar in the band (see "Congo Square"), or maybe he can join Brian Ferry (see "Boys and Girls") for another album.

The answer to that question is simple... Jennifer Granholm! We just call her 2-penny-jenny.
A Dire Straits was the first CD I got (when they were just coming on to replace vinyl). I really liked it then but never really appreciated how good they and Mark Knopfler were until I started listening to RP.
I picked up this CD years ago in a clearance bin and believe it to be one of the wisest purchases I've made musically! I love (early) Dire Straits and think Knopfler is a genius. I can even over look the Princess Bride soundtrack, he's that good! :) Thanks for playing this and some more songs from that CD wouldn't hurt either.
A clear 10!

Because his last effort, Sixty-Six Steps sounds like a blend of Holiday Inn lounge music and malapropos covers - making it as weak as the Knopfler drivel. . .
He makes it sound easy to play that thing.

Sorry, just sounds like a really competent sunday guitar player, jamming with his mates down at the local bar over a few lite ales. That same level of SOUL, or lack thereof. There's just no FIRE in Knopfler and his music, sorry. Seems painfully obvious to me. maybe I'm missing something, but it's all just so mediocre. Great guitar technique, granted, but still mediocre, on the originality, intelligence, wit , dynamism scale. Sorry to have treaded on any sacred cows' toes. Moooo.
I think most of the appeal is just that. That he can get around a fretboard well and constuct some luscious melodies. And the production on every ( ? ) Knopfler release is impeccable. So basically, you've got yourself an excellent guitar player who is extremely audible. And if that does something for you like it does me sometime (you've got to be in the mood I find), then you, my friend, are a Knopfler fan. Otherwise, listen some more and like Bob Dylan you'll understand jsut what is so great about this man even if listening to his music isn't an absolute pleasure. Although he does decend into wankery on occasion (try some live releases...my god, and the audience really WANT 10 minute solos?) Still, there is sometihng worth hearing and worth appreciating here. You've just gotta search a little more.
I was actually thinking earlier on today, why don't they play Mark Knopfler more often on RP? Not my most favourite song, but still Knopfler. Would be nice to hear stuff from his newest album, The Ragpicker's Dream.

Skymunky, often my thoughts too. I find his music highly listenable and technically articulate, but the music in general never evokes the godlike feeling in me. Undeniable skill - I wouldn't argue that.
