I am an opera singer
I stand on painted tape
It tells me where I'm going
And where to throw my cape
I call my co-stars "brother"
I call my co-stars "knave"
I play both good and evil parts
I sing to Verdi's grave
And every single morning
By 10 AM I'm dressed
My rehearsals last for hours and hours
With diligence I have been blessed
Some people, they call me monster
Some people, they call me saint
My talent feeds my darker side
Yet no one will complain
I am an opera singer
I sing in foreign lands
I've sung for kings in Europe
And emperors in Japan
And after each performance
People stand around and wait
Just to tell me that they love my voice
Just to tell me that I'm great
I am an opera singer
I will sing when you're all dead
I sing the mountains crumbling apart
I sing what can't be said
I am an opera singer
I sing in foreign lands
Most people seem to know my name
Or at least know who I am
I stand on painted tape
It tells me where I'm going
And where to throw my cape
I call my co-stars "brother"
I call my co-stars "knave"

So done with Cake. Just not for me.

Okay, so what's Bill's fascination with Cake? If I hear a new song that really annoys me, I can be pretty sure it's Cake. The only group that makes me turn the volume off until I see the next song pop up.
Well now you have to play "Opera Star" by Neil young. On the Reactor album.
I think I'd rather have had the opera, Bill. And I hate opera almost as much as I hate C&W. This isn't one of Cake's finest, IMO. Muting until the fat lady sings...
Cake is ok, but less is better for you. I feel like I have been eating (hearing) too much of it lately.
Can't even throw them a crumb. This band is stale.

Great band but singer is a total tool...saw them live once...never again. Played barely an hour long set...guy talked to us like we were children...no encore. Lame. I'll pass on the Cake thanks.

This is nice, good work!

Yup.
This has to be the worst band I have ever heard.
Just fuc*ing terrible. Everything they do is worse than the last thing.
Can't believe there are people who like this.
It's like everyone associated with this band has had a full lobotomy.
" I am an opera singer." I sing what can't be said.
Everything they do sounds like a sitcom jingle from the seventies.
" Well we're movin' on up, to the east side, gonna call ourselves cake and be freaking millionaires."
Where is the puke smilie?

Comfort Eagle is a great album. What should be my next couple Cake CDs to buy?
I'd say Prolonging the Magic and Fashion Nugget. I'd avoid Pressure Chief though.
This and Long Shirt Short Jacket are my 2 fave Cake songs. I wouldn't call myself a Cake fan but those 2 songs really hit it. Also I love the cover art on this album.
I'm a BIG Cake fan, and this may be my favorite. This and Comfort Eagle. Fun band in concert and extremely tight and they rock out!

Curious how they could be so different from what we get here.

Oops! Cake's on, gotta go

Comfort Eagle, as an album, is so full of great lyrical moments that it boggles the mind, not least of which is this song's opening verse...
Sad to see this getting pummeled so badly when even the dregs of Neil Young's catalogue are afforded near-hero status. Sigh.
Boooooooooooooooooooooring
WOW!!!!! Check the artists website. Completely in Dutch and you can buy a cake there! haha
New one for me. As with all cake songs, it takes some getting used to... But I think I like it.. Yes, I do. Different than the other cake songs I've heard, but cool.

It's creepier when someone else has said it. Then you have to go back and edit your comment so you don't look like a dork.
Or accept your dorkness and leave it alone.

I do the same thing, or haven't you noticed?
I'm with Old Pink on this one. Cake is completely vapid. Reminds me of the time in high school when the assistant manager at the Mr. Burger tried to convince me that ''Stairway to Heaven'' was really deep, as opposed to psuedo-deep. As if. I know, I know. Cake is supposed to be all ironic and humorous and stuff. Stop. Just stop. It's tiresome. So, so tiresome.

Gotta love a rock band who can write songs about opera singers.

I used to love this band, but John McCrea's vocal style has started to grind on me. He's too dispassionate, too ironic, too cool for his own art.

Why why why must they try to do this?? Sure it's a weird Neil song, and you have to at least wish you were there, but I don't think they were.

just once, I'd like to hear this singer cut it loose on a song rather than do his usual chanting-to-music thing. I'm not saying it would be good, but I'd like to hear it.

- Drink some tea, call mother.
Sounds about right.
Cake rules.
God i love Cake! And this whole album is just amazing. For anyone who thinks this is musically unchallenging, try the one without any words on this cd--i think it's called "Arco Arena." That one just freaking GROOVES.
Is this like Barry Manilow? Do they sing the songs too?
I dig Cake, despite the fact that every song sounds pretty much the same.
In this case, though, I just can't figure out why the hell they're singing about this.

I like the handclaps.
I agree that this music isn't as fluid as others, but I think that's deliberate. It's like they took a song and chopped it into tiny pieces, then removed every other one. Pointilist music.
Asinine, lyrically and melodically.
Cute, but not music!

I agree. Love the lyrics here, but the arrangement seems concocted rather than composed. Many better tracks in the Cake library.

Yes, this Cake is somehow rancid to my taste

Nice juxtoposition of cheezy beats and operatic reference. A toe-tappin\' fun fest. I need to look into Cake.

sorry "dangerboy", your music bearings seem a bit suspect: a "1" ("Barfo-Sucko") for Lennon's "Imagine, U2's "One", The Beatles "A Day In The Life", among others betrays your "sensibility" for music - along, it would seem, with a few other concepts of relative importance. i dunno, maybe your sense of the world reflects reality - but i will do everything in my being to reject such a reality. peace.

too bad those "local Cake heads" you know are so rigid in their thinking.
This song gives me a completely different impression of this band. I have only heard the usual few Cake songs and they were only \"ok\" to me. This one is outstanding. Which is more representative of Cake? \"Opera Singer\" or the most familar/played Cake songs?

I doubt anyone else could sing about the workaday stage machinations of an opera singer and still make it interesting.
