There are some things you can't cover up with lipstick and powder
Thought I heard you mention my name, can't you talk any louder ?
Don't come any closer, don't come any nearer
My vision of you can't get any clearer
Oh, i just want to hear girls talk
I got a loaded imagination being fired by girls talk
It's a more or less situation inspired by girls talk
But I can't say the words you want to hear
I suppose you're going to have to play it by ear
Right here and now
Girls talk and they want to know how
Girls talk and they say it's not allowed
Girls talk, if they say that it's so
Don't you think that I know by now
Got the word up on everyone's lipstick
That you're getting faded
Though you may not be an old fashioned girl
You're still going to get dated
Was it really murder ?
Were you just pretending ?
Lately I have heard you are the living end
Girls talk and they wanna know about her
Girls talk, they wanna know if I care
Girls talk and they wanna know where
Girls talk girls talk

There's nothing new he offers. Always the same stuff. Skip.

LOL! Maybe thats the point?
It was written by Costello.

So who is this song written by? I have a great version by Nick Lowe on my computer that I really like - it's better than this version for sure. So I just assumed it was Nick's song. Is it? Maybe a Rockpile tune or something. The version I have is so great. I love EC but this sounds boring by comparison.

Totally agree! Costello is a manifestation of all that was truly awful in "Grease", visually draped in the dreck of punkesque nonsense.
You lost me with this comment.
I guess I'm officially over Mr. Costello.
This sounds funny. Would be a 9 if it was the original (or the version I know better).
EDIT: Oh, yeah, Dave Edmunds as someone said. Not the original but better. Though E.C. is great - especially his earliest work.

Their chronology seems to indicate that it is a Dave Edmunds song even though they indicate "words and music by Declan McManus" (AKA Elvis C.), and they list it as being "covered" by Elvis Costello and the Attractions.
The story circulating is that Elvis "gave" this song to Dave Edmunds when he was drunk.
Sounds a little like people who think "Because the Night" is a Patti Smith song or that "Fire" is a Pointers Sister song because Springsteen "gave them away" before doing his own version...
First I thought, it's Joe Jackson...
I prefer the Dave Edmunds version of this song, but a good one none the less.

Huh? This was penned by Declan McManus himself.
This is amusing, check out this link:

Originally recorded for "Get Happy" but didn't make the cut, ended up as a B side on a single of "I Can't Stand Up For Falling Down"
p.s. I like Dave Edmund's version a lot, too.

Get Happy! was not the first EC album I bought, but it's the first one that really rang my bell from beginning to end, and it has always been my favorite.
This Year's Model is a very close second and Trust is right up there, too.
LOOOOOVE This Year's Model!
Love Elvis but the original outshines this remake by far.

For some reason this is also on the Get Happy! bonus CD. I've only heard this song there. Anyway, Get Happy! is a great album, for those of you who like Mr. Costello.

Agreed. I am fine with Bill playing what he wants - even for the songs I don't like (I do like EC, but that's not the point). It's his radio station and my mute button is really easy to hit for songs I just can't stand.
Play on Bill, play on!
I agree. I like the mix on RP, and that necessarily includes stuff of which I am not personally fond. I'm may be dissatisfied with a selection here and there, but I like the variety and I like being surprised, pleasantly or otherwise.

Keep the Elvis coming, Bill. Thanks.

Great song, great artist.

Again with the telling us what we can listen to! Based on the rating of this song there are more people who like it than don't. While it is clear from your profile and ratings list that you absolutely HATE Elvis Costello I think it would be really nice of you to let the rest of us have some choice. Since this is radioparadise and not radioimabubblygirl perhaps you should just mute and wait for the next song you do like.
Pulled straight from bubblygirl's profile

March 8th in Charlotte, NC - Grady Cole Center. Going to be good - can't wait!
Thinking about the Linda Ronstadt version - a friend of mine and I were talking at lunch last week about all the "older" artists who thought they had to come out with "punk" or "new wave" albums in the late 70's to try and stay hip. The Linda Ronstadt album was one that came to mind.
As sung by Dave Edmunds, this song is fresh & catchy - one of my all time favorites. As sung by Elvis, well, I dunno - it sounds a bit mechanical.
One out of two Elvi aint bad--this aint the one, however.

Actually, I bet the original poster is thinking of the Dave Edmunds version, which got a lot of radio airplay back in '79.
I find this song absolutely compelling. It's my character weakness to be tormented by wondering just what they are saying. This is Elvis as genius.

What connection does Elvis have with that horrible musical?
