The lights go out and I can't be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
Have brought me down upon my knees
Oh, I beg, I beg and plead, singing

Come out of things unsaid
Shoot an apple off my head, and a
Trouble that can't be named
A tiger's waiting to be tamed, singing

You are
You are

Confusion never stops
Closing walls and ticking clocks, gonna
Come back and take you home
I could not stop that you now know, singing

Come out upon my seas
Curse missed opportunities, am I
A part of the cure
Or am I part of the disease? Singing

You are
You are
You are
You are

You are
You are

And nothing else compares
Oh, nothing else compares
And nothing else compares

You are
You are

Home, home, where I wanted to go
Home, home, where I wanted to go
Home, home, where I wanted to go (You are)
Home, home, where I wanted to go (You are)

In 2004 my stepfather passed away unexpectedly. My only sibling, my brother, was in prison at the time for a drug addiction situation. He obtained compassionate release to attend the funeral with a strict admonition to return at a certain date/time after the ceremony. When I had to take him back it was all predictably sad and horrible and we were running late. I was driving like a frenzied maniac so that he wouldn't suffer further punishment, and THIS song, Clocks by Coldplay came on, and my brother had never heard it and he looked over at me with a grin on his face and said, "Did he just sing 'a tiger's waiting to be tamed'?" And I was like, "yup, this song is awesome, right?" My brother had the sould of a poet and had a soft spot for unique lyrics. He mainly listened to punk rock, but this song spoke to him somehow. We listened to it on repeat the rest of the way there and he was so happy. For that moment we both were. It was magical.

My brother died a month ago. We played Clocks at his memorial. The thing is, don't want to cry when this song plays; I just want to grin and remember his joy at hearing it for the first time. Today, I'm crying anyway, but next time I hear it I'll probably feel that joy again. I hope.

Wouldn't be the first time that a person that I don't know calls me that. This song is nails on the chalkboard to me, whiny & repetive, but hey I'm glad you like it.

Recognize this type of comment?  It's usually written in reverse, and is sometimes dressed up to try and disguise the writer as a sage individual.  That, it rarely does.
I do love this song, but only because it appeals to me. . . and I have no expectation that others should feel the same way.

PS - I don't "think" I'm a musical idiot. . . but since this thought emanates from my own brain,  there is no way for me to prove or disprove it.

I would agree If Coldplay actually wrote this song. They didn't. Another band did. Litigation followed.
Easily their best song. Still loving it after 20 years. I can’t believe I just said that.
Still sounds absolutely great all these years later.

Their early records were superb. Epic, soaring, sophisticated pop songs, with more than a bit of an a-Ha influence . I do feel that the anti-Coldplay sentiment is more of a "received general opinion" than anything.

The people who hate this had music lessons.
One of their top 5 songs.

I love the sound of coldplay and I think they have evolved from slow and sad, to joy and light...
I can easily understand that some people don't like it but say it's not music!!! They are ultra musical and harmonious, but it all depends on everyone's tastes...
Personally I listen to a lot of metal, rock, jazz, classical, trance... But Coldplay has a special place in my playlist! Long live them! and RP of course! Thanks again B&B

Loved this song from the moment I first heard it. That hypnotic piano riff….
It's funny how much hate really popular bands bring out.  Coldplay, Radiohead, U2, REM, etc.  I guess it's like the Yankees or the Patriots if you don't enjoy watching them win, you hate them.  There is no in between.  Doesn't seem very rational, but most people aren't.
Seems Coldplay hate is popular - haters - too bad. This band is really talented and write banging tunes. Love it!
Ole Stetsonman chiming in with his bile… maybe he will figure out how the skip button works and maybe he will eventually find love or a horse or a hat that fits.
I won an internet competition once, it was to write lyrics as trite and shite as Coldplay. Can't find 'em now, but it was a lot of car and far, interspersed with "ooohhhhhh"

Never has a band benefitted so much from great producers.
I'd just like to say me and my lover do what we like to do. It's not everybody's taste but it's ours

A +10 from me... It has to be the time signature 4/4 almost fits ... but her is

https://forums.whirlpool.net.a...

"Is Coldplay - Clocks in a weird time signature. It sounds almost like 3+3+2/8. It does fit into standard 4/4 time, however 3+3+2/8 just seems to fit nicer. I think I read somewhere that it is actually in that time signature. Some classical composers have used this time signature also. I do enjoy listening to music in unusual time signatures.
3+ 3 +2/8 is a bizarre time. "

Yup a solid 10 just for having and successfully creating a song wiht a,  Dave Brubeck  like , "F" word bizarre time signature.

There are also people who don't think its fair that your band is as successful as it is. But what does "fair" have to do with you? You're Chris Martin, and you don't make apologies for being a bright, shining light.

I must admit, I saw him once (on TV) do a live thing for Apple where he sang solo on the piano. And even though I am a ladies man through and through, what I felt that moment was what you could call a man crush. That guy is so effin good looking, has such a nice, but not at all bland, personality and is just so much like how I secretly want to see myself, it is crushing, really. Some people really have it all, *and* deserve it.

Of course, I have no idea how much of that stage image is true for the person behind the curtains, but I like to believe it's all true. And I sincerely hope it is all working out nicely for him. Fame is a curse as much as a blessing.
To me 7 - Quite Likeable  ONLY -> 3 + Skip

Yep another agreement from me.  The first two albums were something special, then it all went a bit 'meh', and has remained so ever since.
Definitely a 10 from me especially as Chris Martin is a local lad who's made it.
Happy to give this song a 10 in spite of the general anti-Coldplay sentiment.  A riff like that is once in a lifetime and ought to be celebrated.

If I go a long time between hearings, it can still surprise me with how good it was. He sang a lot like Pete Townshend, and the guitars, the drums, and the wonderful piano were all spot-on, and stayed in the ears and on the mind like a pleasant breeze in a time of turmoil.
