I couldn't tell
The weight of the world was on your shoulders
Couldn't tell you were unhappy
You were unwell

I go along
Like nothing is wrong, no need to worry
Too late to feel sorry
Upon borrowed time

And now there's no answers
No easy way out
Take it all if you want
Take it all if you want

If you know how to run, sweet Virginia, you should run
If you know how to play, sweet Virginia, you should play
If you know how to sing, sweet Virginia, you should sing
If you know how to be, be without me, you should be
You should be

I couldn't see
It seems I don't learn or get the message
Don't know how you carry it
All by your self

How can it be?
It doesn't belong, it's so not funny
This vintage of violence
Again on parade

And now there's no wonder
No shelter from shame
Be alone if you want
Be alone if you want

If you know how to run, sweet Virginia, you should run
If you know how to play, sweet Virginia, you should play
If you know how to sing, sweet Virginia, you should sing
If you know how to be, be without me, you should be
You should be

If you know how to run, sweet Virginia, you should run
If you know how to play, sweet Virginia, you should play
If you know how to sing, sweet Virginia, you should sing
If you know how to be, be without me, you should be
You should be

My name's Virginia, and I've always identified with all the 'sweet Virginia laments' over the years -- I'm one of those women that desolate men eye longingly, and the Virginia they long for indeed does not exist. It's like I'm a wish that never comes true. But without all those desolate longings of others, I'm simply Virginia, a person with my own longings.
The genius that is "Miles End" causes me to automatically add an extra point to any other Gomez song.
Wow, the first tune from Gomez I DON'T like.
The instrumentals are great, but the lyrics and vocals...ugh.
New Gomez CD coming June 21st!!!!!

Make that six. Err... nine!.. no, eleven!.. Hmm, this could go on for a while...

Cuz she's the woman that so many men hold in their heads. She's that strong but fragile feminine mystery that loves unconditionally and is our loyal companion and stalwart defender.

i like gomez... first time hearing this song though
Listened to this CD yesterday. Not usually the Gomez I go to whenever I want to listen to them, but a pretty good album nonetheless.

It's a pretty good tune, but I'm not sure if it displays unusually early skill or maturity.  Anyhow, isn't "precocious" one word?

nice song, front to back... a lot of middle...nice
I like Mick's Sweet Virginia better.

Gomez is one of those hit or miss bands; only they seem to be extreme with it; some of their songs are great, really great and some suck. I am pleased to say, that this is one of the great ones! Love this song!{#Dancingbanana_2}

Unfortunately...remains uninspiring in spite of my best efforts...blec...

Come east and find out for yourself!

Most of it i really like but then there are a couple of bits where it just seems to get bogged down completely out of character with the rest of the song.  In fact now that i listen i think its the chorus i have a problem with.
Oops nearly mis-read the song title.

I'd have to say this is the worst album put out by Gomez (it's hard to live up to consistently putting out top notch albums), but this is the best song on the album I think.

I adore Gomez but have to admit in most cases I like the Ian and Ben songs more than the Tom songs. This is a Tom song, and one of his better ones, but if this is the best song on this album, then it's not one of their best albums. (There's some logic in there somewhere.)

I'd have to say this is the worst album put out by Gomez (it's hard to live up to consistently putting out top notch albums), but this is the best song on the album I think.

Ah, Club 9:30. Glad to hear they were on that night, the show I saw here in Chi-town was a big let-down. I sat on the El with a couple of uber-fans who insisted that it was the worst performance they had seen Gomez do, and that all other shows were fantastic. Love this song, and most of this album. Still think In Our Gun is their best, though. Not a real fan of the latest album.
They apparently hate Chicago. Yesterday's performance at Grant Park was really bad.

Have to agree - saw them at the 9:30 in DC, and they really rocked. My ears were ringing for days. The guys in the band seem to have zero rock-star attitude, which is refreshing.

Gomez - Good stuff, all of it.

kinda generic .. but still, pretty good
a lovely mellow tune. the live show I saw was far from bland. these guys looked like they were having the best time ever on stage. v. high energy & skilled musicianship.
If you know how to....shut up......shut up!
I've found a Gomez/food analogy that explains my lack of enthusiasm: pasta. Plain warm white pasta with nothing on, in or under it. Apparently that comes close to describing their stage presence as another commentator reports farther down the log...
Certainly annoyed at the screaming going on in this song. She sounds as if her foot had been caught by the wrong side of an electric staircase. Horrible. Maybe their other songs are better.
The fact that Radio Paradise plays so much Gomez makes me feel like I should really like and respect them. But I don't, and they haven't grown on me, and well... (shrug).
This band had a lot of promise. They held up well, too. They could have pulled a Travis, but didn't. Saw them in Chicago at the Metro in '99. Great show.

Ugh. This song is too often in the playlist. Can we PLEASE not hear it so frequently?
Yeah, it is running a little often, isn't it? Hmmm.

I'm over it too. I was surprised to find I'd never rated it. 5.
I can't get enough Gomez. Keep it coming!
Saw Gomez in Las Vegas this past September at House of Blues...amazing concert and an amazing sound system there! Then saw them recently in NYC at Irving Plaza. Different set list...still very solid. These guys make intelligent rock....play tight on stage and are very appealing in their style. This is a nice cut from the album....keep up the good work...love to hear something from the new Robyn Hitchcock album as well!

I agree with this.
Gomez is strangely appealing
Amazingly crisp beats, hypnotic vocals, what's not to like?

Loved 'In Our Gun'....now I gotta buy another album...thanks, RP! Edgy, different sound compared to Gun. Not bad.

This entire album is awesome. I have seen them twice this year; not very charismatic/stage presence oriented, but the music is great to experience live. If someone else doesn't start posting the other great songs on this album, I will have to do it myself!!
