We Only Knew Each Other By Letter
I Went To Meet Her Off The Train
When The Smoke Had Cleared And The Dust Was
Still
She Was Standing There And Speaking My Name
I Guarantee She Looked Like An Angel
I Couldn't Think Of What I Should Say
But When Adam Saw Eve In The Garden
I Believe He Felt The Selfsame Way
I Handed Her Up On The Wagon
And I Loaded Up Her Trunk Behind
She Was Sitting Up There With The Gold In Her Hair
And I Tried To Get A Hold Of My Mind
Do You Think That You Could Love Me Mary
Do You Think We Got A Chance Of A Life
Do You Think That You Could Love Me Mary
Now You Are To Be My Wife
We Finally Headed Out Of The Station
And We Drove Up The Home Trail
And When We Came To The Farm She Laid A Hand
On My Arm
I Thought My Resolution Would Fail
And I Froze As She Stepped In The Doorway
Stood There As Still As Could Be
I Said I Know It Ain't Much, It Needs A Woman's
Touch
Lord She Turned Around And Looked At Me
Do You Think That You Could Love Me Mary
You Think We Got A Chance Of A Life
Do You Think That You Could Love Me Mary
Now You Are To Be My Wife
We Had A Prairie Wedding
There Was A Preacher And A Neighbour Or Two
I Gave My Golden Thing A Gold Wedding Ring
And The Both Of Us Said I Do
And When The Sun's Going Down On The Prairie
And The Gold In Her Hair Is Aflame
I Say Do You Really Love Me Mary
And I Hold Her And I Whisper Her Name
Do You Think That You Could Love Me Mary
You Think We Got A Chance Of A Life
Do You Think That You Could Love Me Mary
Now You Are To Be My Wife

Agreed.
Wonderful. Only wish Gillian Welch was featured a bit more prominently.
Agreed.
I guess that it takes an artist from Great Briton to explore America.
I have this CD. Never noticed this song before now....why? Going to put it on and play it again!! 8.
Every time you think surely you've heard every perfectly smooooooth-vibe song Mark Knopfler ever even thought to hum, then along comes RP with another gem that had somehow been withheld from your psyche. What a treat!
I love great "story" songs, this is wonderful, MKs voice is quietly compelling. I just wish it went on longer.
This would be such a great Valentine's song, it's so smooth and romantic. I wish I'd thought of it a few days ago.
Knopfler is just soooooooooo smooooooth. Smoother than mercury on glass. So smooth you could skate on him.

Completely concur. Nicely said.
Classic Knopfler. Evocative lyrics, haunting guitar licks. Makes me feel like I'm in another century - 'nuff said.

is this the same Gillian Welsh from Central Peel Highschool in Brampton, Ontario, Canada?? Amazing

Holy crap this came so brilliantly after The Levellers!
Goosebumps, Bill, goosebumps.
And as one of the bigger Mr K fans out there, I am overjoyed to see 182 votes for this song, and the first song I've seen ever on RP's site without some 1s and 2s!

BilI, love most forms of music, from Pink Floyd to Pavarotti, I don't get the amount of Mark Knopfler to put to air???????????
One of his sweetest compositions - and he has many.
A day without Mark Knopfler is an empty day - thanks Bill!
With Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, as well as in the song "Speedway At Nazareth", the same album.
Lyrics, sweet as honey, but the song has a unique quality on its own... Beautiful solid work on the guitar!

I certainly "get it", this song gets a solid 9 from me. Prairie Wedding currently has an average 7.6 with 72 votes, so it looks like others "get it" too, but we're all entitled to our own personal tastes.
Even "Ave Maria" (yes, THAT Ave Maria) the only Pavarotti I could currently find on RP only gets a 5.2

Love this! Nice song from very nice musicians!
First Listen 7 at present - love the background, persistent yet just distant enough . . . like the sun going down on the prairie very nice.
Great song, even better live.
you had your chance. leave it to the locals
