I've been dragging around
From the end of your coat for two weeks
Everywhere you go is swirling
Everything you say has water under it
You know I keep your fingerprints
In a pink folder in the middle of my table
You're the tall kingdom I surround
Think I better follow you around
You might need me more than you think you will
Come home in the car you love, brainy, brainy, brainy
I've been dragging around
From the end of your coat for two weeks
You keep changing your fancy, fancy mind
Every time I decide to let it go
I was up all night again
Boning up and reading the American dictionary
You'll never believe me what I found
Think I better follow you around
You might need me more than you think you will
Come home in the car you love, brainy, brainy, brainy

The parts of this song just don't fit together. The drumming sounds to sanitized like its off a song played on a religious pop station and the singer sounds like a really, really tired Nick Cave.

I've noticed that phenomenon with other artists and can easily see it happening with The National. Much as I like his voice and their music, I think their songs would start to feel like overkill if heard one after the other, like you mentioned.
p.s.: I have to amend this posting because I picked up a copy of their CD "High Violet" yesterday and listened to it from start to finish and it never seemed like overkill at all. They have a very unique musical vision and sound which I really like. It may be a bit dark for some, and it is very personal, but I think it is beautiful - musically and lyrically.

I'm trying to not like this band but it is not working. May end up owning an album or two.

There is something about the production of this album that I don't like. It is almost like they mixed the vocals wrong. Sometimes too muffled...
I get bored listening to the CD after a while, but any song mixed in with other music really stands out to me. I like the songs, but not all at the same time.

I'm hearing shades of Chris Rea. Pretty good stuff.
Obviously the haters are not brainy enough to appreciate such great music.
mine too - we must live on the same planet...

If one were in need of a tedious way to pass time, perhaps as some sort of penance, one could click here and try to find the positive comments.
It's kinda like playing Where's Waldo only instead of seeing lots of stripes you see puke emoticons.

SOLID NINE... Close to TEN..
The National is a unique sounding band. Marbles??
Normally something I'd like,but...no.
LOVE The National.
this guy should get the bag of marbles out of his mouth when "sings". it might help. then again, probably not
too bad there's no ZERO rating. so boring

I saw these guys with R.E.M. back in June. They did a Hell of a job opening the show!
Too much time devoted to melancholy.

Better yet, buy a CD with actual music on it.

Great stalker song. Love it.
Unfortunately this CD sounds terrible. It's compressed to within 1dB of death. Dammit.

Huh? What did he say?
I heard a song from this cd (it may have been this one, I'm not sure) at the grocery store today. It's Muzak! I like it, though.
Enough of these guys please. They are just fine, but the quality of the music certainly doesnt warrant all that airtime they are getting here on RP.
But it seems people on here like them a lot.
Very good CD, though I did notice the poor sound on the CD. Becoming one of my favorites.

Great band, I'm not familar with their work, but I really like the way they drop the pretense of Americans not knowing what their government is doing in their names. If you like the singers voice check out music by Greg Brown, try "Spring Wing" or "You Don't Really Get Me".
This CD is a great piece of work. I have the prior 2 releases and, although both are worthy, this is exceptional.
Starting to grow on me.
wonderful album.
I think these guys are good.
I heard a glimmer of Iggy Pop's 'Candy'. Not a bad thing.
c.
Seems clipped now. Not repeated. Packets are getting dropped.
Surly Tindersticks.
getting better with every listen. 7 => 8 and climbing...
I totally agree. Fantastic CD.
