I used to live in new york city
Every thing there was dark and dirty
Outside my window was a steeple
With a clock that always said 12:30
Young girls are coming to the canyon
And in the morning I can see them walking
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn
And I can't keep myself from talking.
At first so strange to feel so friendly
To say good morning and really mean it
To feel these changes happening in me
But not to notice till I feel it.
Young girls are coming to the canyon
And in the morning I can see them walking
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn
And I can't keep myself from talking.
Cloudy waters cast no reflection
Images of beauty lie there stagnant
Vibrations bounce in no direction
And lie there shattered into fragments.
Young girls are coming to the canyon
And in the morning I can see them walking
I can no longer keep my blinds drawn
And I can't keep myself from talking.
Every thing there was dark and dirty

GODLIKE!!! ICONIC!!! Thanx RP!
More Mamas & Papas, please!!
This tune was so of its time. The next year things started getting ugly in the Canyon too.

Wow, this song is awful. Please remove from playlist. Also, would you please play more current stuff? These oldies are getting old. :)
LOL
hippies, hippies everywhere..
Way to go, Bill! Stick this piece of awesomeness right in my ear to wake the brain and remember a time when simple harmonies ruled the airwaves and we actually liked it. Mama C was a gift. Thank you.
So much great music created back in their time. Thank you RP for resurrecting it from time to time.
Just watched Jakob Dylan’s excellent documentary “echo in the canyon“ about the Laurel Canyon scene.

Maybe but certainly fit well in the new Tarentino Hollywood movie when depicting the Manson Family girls strutting around LA.
Was this song in Bad Times at the El Royale, seems like I've heard it recently, and that's all I can think of

I'd be inclined to agree with you, as a chorister myself, however the tuning is just awful...
Ahhhh. the lost art of choral harmonies.

Love this so much. Does however bring Linda, Leslie, Susan and Patricia to mind...
Anyone notice that ALL radio gets better after midnight ? Management goes. home? 1230 has always been my favorite M&P song.
Ready for flaming! I can't stand this group. I liked flower children to a point but this full blown hippiness is so grating. My joy is elsewhere.
dark, dirty and now fully gentrified. can I join the young girls and get the hell out?
Yeah, who doesn't want to give into the West Coast hippy-dippy cool sweet 'n breezy vibe of a The Mamas & The Papas song? "Young girls are coming to the canyon." But you know, Charles Manson kinda ruined it for everyone. Could only muster a 2.
Ahhhh. the lost art of choral harmonies.

John Phillips was always such a crybaby about living in NYC; why did he move there if he couldn't handle it - to get his label deal?

RP has a time machine. To take a ride, simply insert 50 years of ears and brain nostalgia here.
Just nice sometimes to hear male-female harmonies, crafted into pop rock songs. If you ever sang in a chorus, you know what I mean!
Oh my, what a pleasant surprise! Volume up! Singing along in harmony!
Hmmmm...
The album is called "The Papas and The Mamas"?

It's still dark and dirty and ..............................very, very expensive

Oh, now we're doing some serious twirlin in the kitchen.
Long live The Mamas & The Papas please return it to sender.
Ear candy.

Most of the junk we hear today will not be fondly remembered as this song is 48 years later.

Sometimes we forget how good the Mamas & The Papas really were and then you hear this.
Inspiration and hope. Who needs it, we have social media!
Geez, I am in my mid 60's. I had not heard it in many years. Who says that hemp destroys brain cells? I remember it.
B side to Monday Monday. Played it much more! Favorite M & P song!
Wow. I don't think I ever would've remembered this song unless I heard it here (I was probably about 4 when siblings used to play/sing it).
Takes me way, way back.

Excellent choice, in my opinion. I remember this one well.
Thanks dsd!
One reason I like this, and many other songs, it isn't overplayed like their other songs.

John Phillips's exacting vocal arrangements in full flower.
Trippy glimpse into an age one can scarcely imagine nowadays; an earnest celebration of music as vibration suited to soothe & excite.
one of my favorites by them.
This group was a working definition of the term vocal harmony.

They had such great harmonies. Timeless!
Such a great band, rivaling Fleetwood Mac for internal dysfunction and shenanigans. This song's a bit dated but the harmonies are wonderful.
