I left my soul
On Californian soil
And I left my pride
With that woman by my side
I never had a willing hand
And I never had a plan
But I'm glad I found you here
But I'm glad I've got you here
But I never had a name
And I never felt the same

They keep on tryin' to end it all
And they will keep on tryin' to end it all
And they will keep on tryin' to end it all
And I never felt the same

I am young, I am old
And so you do what you're told
I never had a willing hand
And so you pack up all your bags
But I'm glad I've got you here
Well I'm glad I've got you here
But I never felt the same
And this life is just a game

They keep on tryin' to end it all
They keep on tryin' to end it all
And they will keep on tryin' to end it all
Until you never feel the same

That smooth base and crunchy percussion comes together to make something fucking incredible.
I can't describe it, but it feels.. aquatic?

Hadn't thought of it like that until I read this post - but maybe it's that synth drip-drop sound?
That voice never gets old.

Yes, I agree with the "not so different you don't recognize the sound" part. When I heard this I thought for a moment it was Massive Attack's "Tear Drop" aka the theme song to the TV Series "House"

Just wrote that same comment before I saw this post.

Big hints of Teardrop, by Massive Attack. Still, this is a great song

It reminds me of the theme song from the TV show House, which was Massive Attack, so I get that.

sad lyrics.

Musically, exceptional.
I love it.
Unfortunately it's vague and weak lyrically, like so many  great-looking blondes.

Another blonde joke.

this has grown on me (in a good way)
This band can do no wrong, in my humble opinion.
This album was #1 in the UK, but this is the first I've heard of it here in the States.  Glad to hear them again.  Hanna's voice is so beautifully haunting and mesmerizing.
She reminds me of Lana del Rey.

You could ask her boyfriend.

They are both great.

Great voice!
Outstanding! An original. Just lovely, in her dark manner and sexy AF!
The guys in this group must have been blown away when they first heard her sing.
A great Song and Album!
interesting voice transition to Hannah Reid from Thea Gilmore
Straight line from Dead Can Dance to this track, at least instrumentally.  Not that I'm not down with it.  London Grammar can do no wrong in my books.  Hannah's voice is a treasure, for sure.
Saw them live again last night and I've said it before, but her voice is unbelievably good live. My only regret is that as they get more popular they play bigger venues and the atmosphere is not the same as those early intimate gigs.
Calafia, or Califia, is the fictional queen of the island of California, being the literary inspiration for what the Spanish called the "Province of the Californias".  Apparently it stretched as far east as modern day Colorado.  That's a lot of soil.

You gay?
I'm in love with this song. That is all.....
New London Grammar?  Love it!
Superior tune, I think anyway. Great....great....great voice!

Who cares? Does she have the voice of an angel? Fuck yeah!

Well, one would wonder based on the lyrics, so what's the problem wanting to know the story?
Is she gay? Who cares? Great sound!
I love the sound they make, but the lyrics ... not so much.

Me as well. The song has been getting better the more I hear it. Thank you RP for introducing me to London Grammar.

Her voice is incredible.
Unique voice....I like it
One of my favorite new bands.
Bumping from 8 to 9.
It's such an excellent song. The entire album makes my soul ache it's so beautiful. LG hit it out of the park on this one, especially when you know the back story behind the album.

Such a great groove.

Having just heard (endured) Florence's Leave My Body I gladly leave her to you. She lacks the subtlety and delicacy that Hannah portrays. I suppose being English means I should have got used to being shouted at by Nanny, but that passed me by!

Love this band :)  So good...
I really like this. I just upped my grade from 8 to 9...
If tastes are not for the discussion, I choose Florence.

She seems happy.
Joan Baez meets Massive Attack

I like it!
Nice when a decent band ups their game.
I would gladly adopt Hannah Reid as a fourth daughter, just to have her sing me a lullaby every night

The first 2 albums are a hard act to follow. I find this a bit of a letdown.

The point of London Grammar is Hannah’s soaring vocals and she seems have lost her wings.

I prefer this sound, personally.  I disliked the falsetto thing.  She's singing properly here to my ears.  But everyone likes different things.
