Calling Elvis - is anybody home
Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone
Did he leave the building
Or can he come to the phone
Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

Well tell him I was calling just to wish him well
Let me leave my number - Heartbreak Hotel
Oh love me tender - baby don't be cruel
Return to sender - treat me like a fool

Calling Elvis - is anybody home
Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone
Did he leave the building
Can he come to the phone
Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone
All right

Why don't you go get him - I'm his biggest fan
You gotta tell him - he's still the man
Long distance baby - so far from home
Don't you think maybe you could put him on

Well tell him I was calling just to wish him well
Let me leave my number - Heartbreak Hotel
Oh love me tender - baby don't be cruel
Return to sender - treat me like a fool

Calling Elvis - is anybody home
Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone
Did he leave the building
Can he come to the phone
Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

Calling Elvis - is anybody home
Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone
Did he leave the building
Can he come to the phone
Calling Elvis - I'm here all alone

That guitar riff at 2:08 is just filthy
Remember when Elvis sightings were all the rage?  "-- I saw Elvis Presley walk out of the Seven Eleven..." For better or worse, they've kinda faded out...but this song still sizzles on all levels! DS at Red Rocks 9-85 was JAM!

Intriguing as I see you are a fellow JJ fan...

Since 1991, never get tired to listen in

That pedal steel - Paul Franklin is amazing...
the
best ever
DS
album!

listened to it thousand of times..
I was initially disappointed in 1991 that this was the Money for Nothing follow-up... but it’s definitely got it’s charms.... (I was 17 btw)

A real toe-tapper - guaranteed to annoy anyone else in the office when I've got my headphones on :)
Best album for rock pedal steel.   Paul Franklin is superb.

Still one of my favorite songs to put on after setting up a huge sound system for a live event.
This song has a fierce underbelly. Moves like a train.
Not one of my favorite DS offerings, but still a heck of a tune.

Elvis Presley is my father!

Everybody in my mushrooming multitude of churches be dancing buck ass naked all across the world like bowlegged gypsy muleskinners...  we love this song...  love sex, drugs, and rock 'n roll...

Thank you!  I still miss my dad...

love this marvelous song...

Bill, How did I know this was coming up next?.  A few songs ago, something reminded me about this tune. Now I have to figure out which tune in the last half hour triggered your brain to play this.

And BTW, this now a 7 and still going up maybe (imho).

I like so much of what Knopfler/Dire Straits does. This is a great one, thanks for playing it!
Yes, agreed - a great album.  I saw Dire Straits on the On Every Street tour, and it was fabulous. However, while this song brings back great 1991 memories, I don't think it's one of their best...almost a throwaway.  Now, give me "Planet Of New Orleans" from that album any day of the week...that's a SONG!
Good luck with that :)

One of the rockin'est songs ever.
Rollin' and Tumblin' R & R.  Love it!
Great album. I'm surprised this hasn't been played in over 4 years!
Agreed!

"Calling Elvis" and the title track of "On Every Street" made me aware of Knopfler and company and since that album's release I have gone back and gotten all past Dire Straits albums and Knopfler solo outings. The man gets it done with his casual vocal style and unbelievable guitar work. Have a listen to "Iron Hand" off "On Every Street"....very graphic about an incident involving labor and the government clashing over policy related to workers... it's almost like you are a witness to "the bloody fray"!
I thought it was about the Battle of Agincourt.
Mark Knophler seems to be enjoying the relative obscurity of his current folk/blues/whimsy interests. After their mainstream blockbusting success of brothers in arms I was less interested in Dire Sraits - for me this album was a surprising change of direction, and had a simplicity and transparency which reminded me of their earlier albums. Liked the sideways looks at Americana of 'My Party' and love 'Planet of New Orleans' with superb guitar solo from Michael Landau. Good stuff.
Nice. MLSS, Graceland, Calling Elvis. Rrrrawkin' good tune! One of Mr. Knopfler's best. 10.
Sometimes ol' Mark reckons he's an Okie...which is also a good thing...
Cool song!

Why do I have the feeling you cut and paste this comment into EVERY Knopfler track? Either that, or somebody needs to call Patrick and let him know that somebody stole his post.
The song as a whole kind of bored me, particularly for DS, but what a great intro to the guitar solo! Two bad the solo itself was so short.

Exactly. Very well said. I had never heard Nick Drake until I heard him here, nad ND predates MK by many years. Thank you, Radio Paradise, for playing the brand new and the older, less heard stuff which is new to the rest of us.
I like the feel of this song and most of the CD. Nice groove. Smooth and creamy.
Somebody needs to call J. J. Cale and let him know that Knopfler stole his groove.
Not one of his better jobs if you ask me.
Knopfler knows how to create meditative soundtrack for a nice, quiet day. Must file this and remember its tranquil effects for the tenser moments....
Good to hear something from this album, which is rock solid throughout. A must have if you're a Knopfler fan.

Aahh... Calling Elvis a rare gem in the Dire Straits treasury. I have fond memories of the On Every Street Album -- it was the first time I was exposed to Dire Straits. Truly great music. I was very upset when he cancelled his tour last year. Hopefully we'll hear something from Mr. Knopfler soon again. Cheers Peter

I agree, I'm on the side that says good music will stand the test of time, and let's find some more! Such as this little gem....can this Brit get a groove on, or what?

i agree
Caught DS on tour back in... '92! Great show... I remember the music critic in the newspaper (who seemed to hate music) complaining that the band just stood there and played. As far as concerts go, I'll take good music over crud-pop's choreographed dance numbers any day, thankyouverymuch.

All the cuts \"On Every Street\" are pretty good like this one.
Fantastic

One of the advantages of maturing is that you recognize great art for what it is and not just because it happens to be new.
Simply sublime.

Dire Straits/M. Knopfler always a nice addition to the mix.
Love this tune. Great use of pedal steel!
