The only one I know, has come to take me away
The only one I know, is mine when she stitches me
The only one I see, has found an aching in me
The only one I see, has turned her tongue into me

Everyone has been burned before, everybody knows the pain

The only one I know, never cries, never open her eyes
The only one I know, wide awake and then she's away
The only one I see, is mine when she walks down our street
The only one I see, has carved her way in to me

Everyone has been burned before, everybody knows the pain
Everyone has been burned before, everybody knows the pain

Everyone has been burned before, everybody knows the pain
Everyone has been burned before, everybody knows the pain

A total classic. This was a game changer when it was first released; it sounded so fresh and new.

Thanks.
I remember back in the day KROQ Pasadena played this quite a bit..

Had to be known as The Charlatans UK in America - legal stuff. Proper name is simply The Charlatans (in UK; from the UK)

Nicely commented! I laughed out loud!
I had this on tape back then. My walkman ran it every day . Good mood sound and ever since I love the Charlatans. Have every single album and even some EPs. Seen 'em live twice. Good performance and nice tunes.

They had to add 'UK' to that band's name. No infringement.
The pensive guitar riff! Gotta love it!
THAT guitar, and that Hammond Mastery, is, like, JAM OF THE CENTURY!  I loved this mind-blower when it came out, and love it still... The vocals, the bass, the drumming, too -- just...frickin' incredible, man... Sure, strains of Deep Purple run through every teenage rocker's veins, but THIS -- and when you consider the vast oevre of this amazing band -- is really, in my opinion, anyway, of a broader, more symphonic kind of artistry.

I wouldn't agree with Cynaera that the Charlatans are a Deep Purple clone, but Bill just made a great segue from this song to DP's "Hush."

Still cool.
Loved this on their first big exposure record in the US, "Some Friendly," back in 1991 or so...still sounds really good, too!
I must say, their new record Who We Touch is a nice surprise -- some tracks on it are as cool and catchy as ever, check it out!

No kidding?! Gotta look that up. I had this great little song on one of my mix tapes when it first came out, and when my mix tapes were actually tapes.

The Charlatans have been putting out records just about as long as The Stone Roses have.
this songs recalls memories since i was 18 years old...

it's great for RP that "listens" what listeners suggest...
Hush from Deep Purple is sure a great choice after this song!!!

Good song connections based either on sound or anything else (lyrics, song title, occasion etc) always add value to the producer's job. Well done RP.

Start also reminds me of Kula Shaker's version of "Hush."

I love the soaring melodies on this song. Goes to show that a song can be slightly derivative and excellent too.

Bands like this are cool.  Intermixing riffs from one song/band and another and their own is the kind of music that makes me smile wide.

That's one of the reasons I enjoyed Tesla so much, at least live.  They just ran so many into each other and made them work very well.

I was listening to this thinking it reminded me of Deep Purple's Hush. Next up in the playlist: Hush.

Sometimes you freak me out, Bill.

You could get Sam Smiths in Oregon?!? Wow - that's some way from Tadcaster in deepest, darkest Yorkshire. You were lucky - Sam's is increasingly hard to get hold of over here now that the sodding supermarkets have almost monopolised booze sales, putting 'off licences' and local stores out of business. There is one store near me that sells it, and as you've mentioned it I'm going to drop by and buy a couple of bottles for tonight, and raise a pint glass to you and to Oregon :*)

I love this song, anyway. And Billy Joe Royal did the original "Hush," which was written by Joe South ("Walk A Mile In My Shoes.")

Very early Charlatans. Tim Burgess sounds like he is 14 years old or something!

I tend to hear this and think I want to play "Fools Gold" or "Real Real Real" next. Not sure why - maybe the voices are soft in a similar way. Still I like 'em

Dude!  So did I !!!!  What the hell is going on??  Like just the other day I was driving at night, and just when I got to a street light, it went out.  How did they know I was there?  They must fear me much more than I had realized.

Yep, Deep Burple Hush rip off for sure

let's up my rating to a 7.7

Kickin'!

7.3
I think they sound a lot like the Stone Roses here.
It seems like the Dove's were heavily influenced by this
The beginning instrumental licks sound like Deep Purple's "Hush"

*edit* guess I should have backscrolled

This is off Some Friendly, originally.  That is one heck of an album.  This is one of several very good songs.
I like the Mark Ronson version of this as well - especially the horns.

"The Charlatans"  —  go figure....

Haha! Check it out. From the Wikipedia entry for the Stone Roses: Although Brown was a technically poor singer, he was a natural showman and held sway over the crowd throughout live performances. Those 'Rave'-bands happened to sound quite similar to each other. Check out the Happy Mondays, Stone Funkers, etc. Reliable ears, though.

Saw these cats at the Vic in Chicago last Wednesday may 24th. Just as I remember from a show I caught some 15 years ago, they are a tight live act who sound almost as good on stage as they do in the studio. Tim Burgess' singing voice in particular is exactly the same on stage as in the studio. I also managed to score a backstage pass and got to hang with the lads for a while. Very cool, humble and mellow folks whose Mancunian accents were so thick they might as well have been speaking Middle Saxon for all I could tell. An excellent time all around and I plan to see them again the next time they're in Chicago.

Yay, Bill! Been awhile since I heard this old gem... When it broke I thought it was the next best thing to Pink Floyd -- loved the organ (too bad Rob died too young)... I can still picture rolling down Loveland Pass to work at A-Basin HA! and work included taking turns in the steep and deep...'Twas living a vacation...and this made it even moreso. I know they're still around, but -- long live the Charlatans "old" sound! This song will always kick some major butt, with that signature keyboard action and voice...
Yee haw, Madchester rave on! Brings me right back to the second summer of love.
good to know i wasnt the only one hearing the purple
Wow, these guys are underwhelming.
