Give me love
Give me peace on earth
Give me light
Give me life
Keep me free from birth
Give me hope
Help me cope with this heavy load
Trying to touch and reach you
With heart and soul
OM, my Lord
Please, take hold of my hand
That I might understand you
Won't you please
Oh, won't you
Give me love
Give me love
Give me peace on earth
Give me light
Give me life
Keep me free from birth
Give me hope
Help me cope with this heavy load
Trying to touch and reach you
With heart and soul
OM, my Lord
Won't you please
Oh, won't you
Give me love
Give me love
Give me peace on earth
Give me light
Give me life
Keep me free from birth
Give me hope
Help me cope with this heavy load
Trying to touch and reach you
With heart and soul
Give me love
Give me love
Give me peace on earth
Give me light
Give me life
Keep me, keep me free from birth
Now, give me hope
Help me cope with this heavy load
Trying to touch and reach you
With heart and soul
OM, my Lord
Wait, this song is only from 2012? Is that correct?
No, it was released in mid-1973. I bought it when it first came out ... yes, this is 50-year-old music.
hippies (like my parents) never really had more of a plan to address world (and personal) problems than 'you just gotta love', utterly unrealistic given humanity's poor track record.
That seems wrong (or simply uninformed) on the face of it. I recommend that people locate and watch the recent (March 2023) PBS documentary The Movement and the Madman, which -- among other things -- explains the huge impact that hippie protesters had on the Viet Nam war and maybe in averting WWIII (for a while longer, at least).
Jet -- an underrated band with three great albums (though no one knows about the 2nd and 3rd ones) -- has a song talking about how the hippies failed to change a thing. They are SO WRONG and really need to watch this documentary, then write a follow-up that acknowledges things.

I take exception to this narrow frame of mind. There are some hippies still working in Computer Science. I am one of them.
You can't make a story like that up.
I never understood the lyric "Keep me free from birth" in this song. Originally, I thought he was singing, "keep me free from birds" and I wondered what he could possibly have against birds.
Well you could google 'rebirth', or 'reincarnation' for that matter.
Not to take away from this beautiful song; but every time I hear George I can only think of how that dink Eric Clapton stole his wife ( I know it takes two to tango, but without Eric the a-holes prompting it would not have happened). I now find out E.C. is an anti-vaxxer and he is known by many as an arrogant ass. Therefore I give to E.C. the 'Piss-off Forever' award. Over-rated guitarist as well.
Couldn't agree more...a Wanker, that lad...
'cept with Cream. That trio was True.
His oh so "Slow Hand". Ha! I found the description adorable.
He anti-vaxx because it almost killed him.
wanker, perhaps?
Clapton, I have read so I am quoting and paraphrasing, wanted everything George had. I gaze in wonder at times at our Greco-Roman, Judie-Christian heritage and wonder about those commandments…
What!?
but yeah. Clapton appeared jealous of many things...

If more people were like hippies, the world would be a better place.
I think about this, periodically. The folks who were young in the 60s-70s, the ones that shouted to not trust anyone over thirty - they're all The Establishment now and what did they do with that responsibility, that idealism?
They dropped the ball and became hypocrites, most of them.
I used to feel that way, and was sort of one - neo, maybe. I Know now that that isn't the way forward.
You know that isn't the way forward - based on what?
The underrated Beatle. A good balance to the others.
I always thought he was the best Beatle.
I Want To Tell You that there's just Something about how his Guitar Gently Weeps that resonates Within You and Without You and is as comfortable as an Old Brown Shoe. It can even get you to forget about the Taxman.
Just my opinion, though.
If more people were like hippies, the world would be a better place.

not kidding at all. The Beatles hurt my ears. I find there music tone deaf, out of tune and generally unpleasant. I totally appreciate and understand their importance but still find the majority of their music unlistenable. Fortunately RP have a PSD button.
This is a scalding hot take, and I'm here for it
Peace - Love - RP! Get the T-shirt!
However, if the optimists in the world ever outnumber the pessimists there will always be "hope"

Finding their music "unpleasant" or "unlistenable" is one matter, but The Beatles were neither "tone-deaf" nor "out of tune".
I totally agree! It's a really bad song. Who said Harrison can sing?
Then your assessment is just as skewed as the person with whom you agreed.
Yes, my feelings exactly! Mr. Harrison's music touches my heart and informs my soul, with wisdom, peace, love and understanding....Long Live RP and Long Live this gem of a man's music!!
and Harrison remains grounded, humble, and spiritual. What a feat. What a great tune. These were complex times and for h im to be such a centering force for the Fabs was no small thing.

..DrLex is incorrect..population density doesn't correspond to over-consumption..our personal
proclivities & desires for self-satisfaction do..
..it's possible to be population-dense & still consume with consideration..it's just that we opt
not to consider things..consuming is so much easier..
..while a population center hasn't yet been proven to be consuming-neutral, it's mostly because
people haven't TRIED..if we can send a man to the moon & robots to map Mars, i'm pretty
sure we can handle population centers responsibly..it's just in the DOING of it..why not?..
..apocalypse will change minds like DrLex, i'm sure..maybe this December (haha, jk)..
Overconsumption is just a consequence of overpopulation. Above a certain population density, it becomes impossible to survive without overconsuming....
Perhaps, but I would guess that the more than 900 million people who suffer from chronic malnutrition may feel that overpopulation has more grave consequences than over-consumption. I understand the connections you are making, but it is possible to survive in a densely-populated area without over-consuming.

I've been listening to George's "All things must pass" on the way to and from work each day in my car's cassette player. Absolutely uplifting and helps keep things in perspective for me. Each day, each moment can be refocused...
Thanks George.

Actually a little hoarse here... of course not as hoarse as on Dark Horse.... but I know what you mean.
We miss him...

George Harrison performing "Bangladesh" during the concert for Bangladesh at 1971, Madison Square Garden.
MAGIC!
My friend came to me, with sadness in his eyes
He told me that he wanted help
Before his country dies
Although I couldn't feel the pain, I knew I had to try
Now I'm asking all of you
To help us save some lives
Bangla Desh, Bangla Desh
Where so many people are dying fast
And it sure looks like a mess
I've never seen such distress
Now won't you lend your hand and understand
Relieve the people of Bangla Desh
Bangla Desh, Bangla Desh
Such a great disaster - I don't understand
But it sure looks like a mess
I've never known such distress
Now please don't turn away, I want to hear you say
Relieve the people of Bangla Desh
Relieve Bangla Desh
Bangla Desh, Bangla Desh
Now it may seem so far from where we all are
It's something we can't neglect
It's something I can't neglect
Now won't you give some bread to get the starving fed
We've got to relieve Bangla Desh
Relieve the people of Bangla Desh
We've got to relieve Bangla Desh
Relieve the people of Bangla Desh
Death is the only thing required of all humans.
(only down side, the title makes me think of,,,,,,,who's that girl?)
Overconsumption is just a consequence of overpopulation. Above a certain population density, it becomes impossible to survive without overconsuming.
Would you rather have a massive amount of people who constantly need to live on the edge, with an imminent risk of disaster when something unexpected disturbs the fragile equilibrium, or a reasonable amount of people who can all enjoy a life without draconian restrictions and with enough leeway when things don't go as planned?
Except for abiding to our insatisfiable instinct to procreate, there is no advantage whatsoever in endlessly increasing the population.
As for George, a 10 just for showin' up!
The world is not Europe.
Not quite the same issue as over population but related. This is an indication that some peoples are shrinking and in risk of disappearing not that over population is resolved (not sure if that's what you meant but that's how I read your post).
Over Population is still arguably the biggest issue the planet is facing.

If you examine the original artwork and album materials that came with this LP, its pretty obvious that this is what he's getting at. George was a devotee of Sri Krishna, and the LP contains painting of the famous Krishna chariot scene from the Bhagavad Gita. The lyrics express a weariness of the world and its burdens—faith and devotion to a Sacred Person enables that person to be freed from samsara through grace.
Great joke concealed in the bottom back of the album cover. Its a messsage advertising a fan club for G.H.—almost an exact parody of the language on a then-recent Paul McCartney and Wings album cover.- It asks the listener to send a self-addressed stamped elephant.
Best vocalist of the Beatles.
I agree.
