We took a vow in summertime
Now we find ourselves in late December
I believe that New Year's Eve
Will be the perfect time for their great surrender
But they don't remember

Anger wants a voice, voices wanna sing
Singers harmonize 'til they can't hear anything
I thought that I was free from all that questionin'
But every time a problem ends, another one begins

And the stone walls of Harmony Hall bear witness
Anybody with a worried mind could never forgive the sight
Of wicked snakes inside a place you thought was dignified
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die

Ooh, ooh, ooh
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die

Within the halls of power lies a nervous heart that beats
Like a Young Pretender's
Beneath these velvet gloves I hide
The shameful, crooked hands of a moneylender
'Cause I still remember

Anger wants a voice, voices wanna sing
Singers harmonize 'til they can't hear anything
I thought that I was free from all that questionin'
But every time a problem ends, another one begins

And the stone walls of Harmony Hall bear witness
Anybody with a worried mind could never forgive the sight
Of wicked snakes inside a place you thought was dignified
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die

Ooh, ooh, ooh
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die

And the stone walls of Harmony Hall bear witness
Anybody with a worried mind could never forgive the sight
Of wicked snakes inside a place you thought was dignified
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die

Ooh, ooh, ooh
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die

And the stone walls of Harmony Hall bear witness
Anybody with a worried mind could never forgive the sight
Of wicked snakes inside a place you thought was dignified
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die

Irritating song!
The podcast "Song Exploder" did a great exploration with the songwriter of how this song was written.
Please stop playing this song. Nothing honest or sincere about the lyrics, just some melodramatic crap.
I think I am hearing arpeggios in the guitar solo, is this correct?

Sounds like a trey anastasio solo to me, he uses a lot.
I've heard this enough to last two lifetimes already.
Strange, every song that directly follows this one sounds better!
"But every time a problem ends another one begins"
...
"I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die"

Certainly been feeling this for some time.   But, aside from that, this has been one of my favorite VW songs for awhile.

Spot on, @William! Call this one a 7 +1 for the NYE references on December 30th, 2023.
And great intro comment as we prep for 2024!! God help us!! (and I'm atheist)

Heh, if only there were a god.
feeling these lyrics as of late:

Anybody with a worried mind could never forgive the sight
Of wicked snakes inside a place you thought was dignified
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die

Kind of Dead like vibe, like it.

Yes!!

Cool song! A little Jerry Garcia-esque style solo guitar 🎸

This is like a bluegrass version of Grateful Dead's "Touch of Grey." I like it!
Catchy!
