We went down to the edge of the water
You were afraid to go in
You said there might be sharks out there in the ocean
And I said I'm only going for a swim

I was swimming around in a circle
I wasn't always in view
You said we might get into red flag danger
And I am alone when I'm not with you

But I am no mermaid
I am no mermaid
And I am no fisherman's slave
I am no mermaid
I am no mermaid
I keep my head above the waves

We were swinging from the centre of the ceiling
You were afraid to give in
I said I know I'll always live for this feeling
And you closed your eyes, you said never again

I was dancing in the middle of the desert
You said we'll burn under the hot sun
I said I'd rather be the colour of pleasure
Than watch like you from under the thumb

But I am no mermaid
I am no mermaid
And I am no fisherman's slave
I am no mermaid
I am no mermaid
I keep my head above the waves

We went down to the edge of the water
You were afraid to go in
You said there might be sharks out there in the ocean
And I said I'm only going for a swim

And I was living around in a circle
I wasn't always in view
You said we might get into red flag danger
And I am alone when I'm not with you

But I am no mermaid
I am no mermaid
And I am no fisherman's slave
I am no mermaid
I am no mermaid
I keep my head above the waves

And I am no mermaid
I am no mermaid
And I am no fisherman's slave
I am no mermaid
I am no mermaid
I keep my head above the waves

Unfortunately, this amazing album is not available on spotify or amazon Music. The CD is even hard to track down. It's truly an exceptional album if you can find it. Well worth the hunt.

Quite few copies of this available on Amazon UK these days if (like me) you are a CD purchasing dinosaur.
I was in the market for a new Sinead... she will do nicely

Great News!
11/11/23 - This album is finally available on Spotify!
This album has been hard to find anywhere since the demise of CDs in the early 2000s.
Trust me when i tell you that the whole album is worth at least one listen-through. Great voice. Well produced. Lots of great songs on there.
Hearing Donovan
Wish we had a repeat, or loop, button.
Love this...
Something about this brings Richard Thompson to mind.
I was lucky to see her in Dublin in 1995 in Whelans's. I was a lone traveller, divorced 32, loved her and the gig, got her autograph to my travel diary, bought the debut album (previous to this), which belonged to my favorites ever since. A nice pick from the memory lane.
great lyrics too
most excellent for me
I like her style.
Great Sender with wounderfuel Songs,,thank you for years from Motion :-) Best Greets from Austria :-)
Oh please, please Sinead, give us another album!!
I love this song. It's been awhile. It always gives me so much hope.
I needed to hear this right now, and didn't even know it.
Thanks, once again, Bill and Rebecca!
This is a terrific album!
I so, so, so wish she would release a second album.

Then I am blessed to own a copy.
The music is definitely quite likable, the comments are also at least that, if not more,

I'm going to have to look for this one....
How many songs are on a full album? Maybe, there is something that rarely makes it to the airwaves—not the stuff that repeated 20 times a day? We could stop, listen, and say: Who is that? Nice. (Not just this number. Sorry, I try not to complain.)

Finally tracked down a used copy of this CD. Good all the way through.
Sounds good to these ears.  Like to hear more from her.  Thanks RP.
i can't stand this song.
Brilliant
thought it was Vienna Teng for a moment...
Sinead was a big discovery for me.
The whole album is superb!

Love it.

Agreed. I find her singing voice without personality, intonation or charisma. 6

{#Sunny} yesssss.

I want to like it, I really do, but it's just bland.  5.
Hey! Don't look at me! I ain't no mermaid, neither!

Hee hee.  I see Nicole Kidman, too.  The name is a crazy hybrid, though.  Imagine the trainwreck if Sinead O'Connor and Lindsay Lohan had a kid.....
My boat has not been floated.

Lovely song.

She sings so soulful, writes beutiful music, is so pretty, is Irish from County Cork, what's not to like?
...this really resonates...

...beautiful song...

I liked the song after hearing it on RP, so I bought the album. It just plain sucked.
I got the CD also, for this song (which rocks) plus "Out Of The Woods", which was covered by Nickel Creek. Alas, Nickel Creek's version is much better than Sinead Lohan's.
Well she sure has mermaid hair.
She makes me want to be a mer-man!
Whoa I always thought she was a mermaid. Good thing she pointed this out, twelve times.
Is she ever going to do another album? Anyone know anything about her career?
I liked the song after hearing it on RP, so I bought the album. It just plain sucked. So over-produced. Most of it sounds like five or six late-90s albums are being played simultaniously.
I think this is just a case of the right voice, melody, rhythym guitar and so on....it's all put together really well and has a coatal feel...
Nicole Kidman with braids? Anyhoo, delicious voice.

Would be seriously good as an "accoustic" song. I hear the drums still, but add two accoustic guitars.
not bad but, maybe I'm wrong maybe not, reminds me so much at Elizabeth Frazer (cocteau twins)...

woah I used to have this song somewhere 5 or 6 years ago...
I wanna be a mermaid too!!
Somebody said... "There is a lot of grace and power in that voice" Aye.
I have a thing for waltzes.
Serious suckage.
I am no mermaid. Really. Nope.
I bought this CD as an impulse buy in the late 90's. It sounded better in the headphones at the store than it did at home. *shrugs*
Not bad at all. Surprisingly good, in fact. I had thought she was just a girl. Maybe I was confusing her with some teen idol in the U.S. or something. (Whatever. What do I know.)
Is that her real name or is it a play on Sinead O'Connor and Lindsay Lohan? Which reminds me: Did you know that the character name Gomer Pyle is from a stage worker named Gomer and Denver Pyle? Do people name their children Gomer anymore? But I digress. Anyway, yes, I liked the song OK.
May need to pick this up, after hearing it many times and always liking....hmmm...
One of only a handful of women's voices that I like. She doesn't overdo it. Great stuff.
It's great to hear Radio Paradise again after a relatively short abscence (a week.) And a great song to hear when I came back...
I want a mermaid!!
I wish she would tour and/or put out some new music!! I love her voice.
Very nice indeed, how about following it up with some Tom McRae - Mermaid blues? ^_^
Very nice...I heard this song here first a few months ago, but one afternoon while dining in the local KFC I heard this come on, followed by Frank Sinatra. Not bad for small town southern GA. I thought the only eclectic radio I could get was here on RP, but KFC has it, too.
She's Irish (obviously). A few years ago a bunch of musicians got together and put some of WB Yeats' poems to music - CD is called 'Now and in Time to Be' A very mixed result - not really worth buying even if you're into Yeats, but she did a version of an eight-line poem called 'The Fish' and it's among the most beautiful 3 minutes ever put to music ... very simple ... one of those songs where you're listening till the very last moment as the music fades slowly away The Fish Although you hide in the ebb and flow Of the pale tide when the moon has set, The people of coming days will know About the casting out of my net, And how you have leaped times out of mind Over the little silver cords, And think that you were hard and unkind, And blame you with many bitter words. Have been meaning to get one of her CD for ages now; thanks for the tip.

Ok, question. If I like this song, is it worth it to buy the CD, or would I feel ripped off?
From my previous post: I bought this CD used. After a few listens, I decided that she was a "one hit wonder" and sold it back. Now that I am hearing her again (years later), I'm sorry I sold the CD.
Heard this played on WMMM in Madison back when it came out. Got the cd in a used store a short while later, have loved it since. Agreed, there are stronger songs on the album, but this one isn't bad. Thanks for playing this. Haven't had this disc on in a while.
How about something else from this album, like maybe Whatever It Takes?

This is one of the few albums I own that I find I keep going back to. This song is actually one of my least favorites on the CD - well worth the purchase.
Having recently joined RP, this is the first song thats compelled me to add a comment. As soon as I heard it begin, a huge smile came to me. Its just lovely. I know it from the soundtrack to the movie "Message in a Bottle" which has some really good songs on.

In this set, this song is the first step up out of the Depressionville mode we have been in. Thank goodness. This makes me feel like getting up and acccomplishing something instead of hanging myself with the nearest sturdy belt from my clothes closet. This also gets us away from what some people consider mellow jazz. Please let's cheer it up some!
"There's no there there."
Sorry, guys...I like it! I could see how it could pale after some repetition, though.

Great comment! I just re-grooved on the Secret of Roan Inish - what a great movie. regarding this song - man, I am so in the minority here - I find the lyrics cloying, the music awkward, and the vocal grating. I'm going to go stand in the Philistine's corner so you folks can enjoy it in peace.

Maybe it's time to get new speakers? Love this tune and the eerie quality of her voice. Qute mesmerizing
maybe it's just me, but the lyrics to this song always strike me as b*tchy.
I don't know what ya'll are talking about. I also am "no mermaid" and I really identify with this song. In fact, I never realized what a mermaid I was not until a carefully observance of the lyrical nuance of this composition. Thanks to Radioparadise and this magical creative talent, I already feel less fishy. Thanks!
