Released: 1970
Length: 6:15
Plays (last 30 days): 2
In days of peace --
Sweet smelling summer nights
Of wine and song;
Dusty pavements burning feet.
Why am I crying, I want to know.
How can I smile and make it right?
For sixty days and eighty nights
And not give in and lose the fight.

I'm going back to the ones that I know,
With whom I can be what I want to be.
Just one week for the feeling to go --
And with you there to help me
Then it probably will.

I won't go down
Acting the same old play.
Give sixty days for just one night.
Don't think I'd make it: but then I might.

I'm going back to the ones that I know,
With whom I can be what I want to be.
Just one week for the feeling to go --
And with you there to help me
Then it probably will.

I enjoy their music, this song included, but it all sounds the same.  The flute is always enjoyable and sadly lacking in much of rock music.
It's  terrible.  Please stop.
Saw them in Kiel, Germany, in 20xy?, and Andersen, standing as usual on one leg the whole time, playing his cross flute. Try this for only five " -
Incredible band, rock solid from the first album.

I saw them in '79, front row, and thought I was late finding them then. They did, indeed, put on a magnificent show.
my best friend in the 6th grade gave me Paul McCartney's 1st solo album for my birthday and sadly didn't understand why I didn't want to switch out for Benefit after. Wasn't to do with Tull or the album, or others she offered (she had a lot of great albums). I simply didn't give away gifts - this was something a person who didn't have a lot of her own things couldn't explain to someone who had anything she wanted.
Nobody else is quite like them.
I'd love to hear a straight lift of Ian Anderson's vocal on this track laid over something written by Maynard James Keenan...I feel like they are kindred spirits for some reason...

GREAT TUNE!  My favorite Tull album.  Thanx RP!

OMG this just went up to a 7 for me. so good.
I often come to comment on how good a bass line is.

But damn, ALL OF THIS is just awesome!

I cut my rock and roll teeth on this album somewhere around 4th grade.
I love the way this song seems to change tempo throughout, but it actually doesn't.
Great song
Great album

They should have been let in based on "Thick as a Brick" alone.
Yes sir I love it.  Their best album imo

Benefit put them on the map to stay IMHO.

That would have been Stand Up, I believe. As I recall, I gave it away when I left home. In some hindsight, this band was quite good for a while. The era when this showed up was a time when the music coming out had a freshness that's not much in evidence today. Maybe an ole farts' perspective, but objectively the continued bursts of creativity in the the late 60s to early-mid 70s was unique. Anyway, by my standard of objectivity, subjectively viewed.
Awesome

Yes.   Sober, tight, disciplined, high energy.  One of the best from the period where in hindsight many of the concerts were mediocre or just plain awful.

I always knew when a concert sucked back then because I simply wanted to smoke more hashish or weed to smooth the concert's rough edges.

Nice segue, Bill:

Foo Fighters "My Hero" --> this.

Probably because the RnR HoF judges died from extreme case of boredom after hearing a single Jethro Dull tune.

I see London with this song. Umbelieveble!
Random Tull musing: What if they'd been born... wait for it... Florida Man instead?!
I was introduced to Aqualung when it came out in 71 - I was 11. I didn't start exploring the Tull catalogue until I was in college in 79 and this album became the soundtrack for that first year, with this song summing up my weekend voyages home.

It depends on one's perspective I guess.  There are still hundreds of successful "punk rock" bands all over the world, and new ones starting all the time, so it appears to be "holding up" quite well, regardless of anyone's opinions or "reasons".
I like Jethro Tull since they exist{#Whistle}

Oh hell yes!  Trouble for me is....I never went back.  Not that I've lost any memories of those times.  It's just that when you're looking, and moving, forward on your adventure you never realize, until it's too late, that for the most part the doors you walk thru close and lock after you pass thru.  That's the price of movin' along...

And as Sir Kurt of the Vonnegut clan would say; so it goes...

Prince Pyotr Alexeyevich Kropotkin approves of this song.
Great memories!
Always rating a "10" for all songs played by Tull.  I went in up side down (literally)in a rushed crowd at Hershey Park, PA wherein Tull played "Passion Play."  Luckily, the multiple hits of acid made it all supercalifragislisticexpialidocious.
" I'll be honest.. fellas, it was sounding great. But.. I could've used a little more flute. So.. let's take it again..."
Such a cool song, from an absolutely fantastic year in the Rock Music world... My college room-mates and friends were WAY into this!
9 for the song, 10 for the segue from Godless
Now, that was a gorgeous aural transition, somehow; Godless by the Warhols to this!
OMG - been so long since I have heard this.  I forgot that I liked him sooooo very much.  In fact, from my memories, I didn't think I really liked him. This pulls all that great stuff back - so trippy!
I never really 'got' Jethro Tull, sorry. That bloody flute drives me nuts. lol!  ;-)
This song is fab!

So you're quite certain it's not you that's oblivious, then?  Because as with wgsu_1978, your musical tastes appear to be a subset of mine.  I am unclear as to how that makes your tastes superior.  Perhaps it's just as simple as "you don't like Jethro Tull" (at least from Aqualung onward).  That sort of thing has been known to happen.
Everytime a JT song ends, I know this is time for me to end my poo break and return to work. Too bad they have so short songs.

I like Tull and most of the punk artists you name, and I find it odd that you can't find it in yourself to do the same. Everything you said about JT is dead wrong, IMO. Why does liking one band/style/era necessarily mean disliking another? My college radio experience spanned Tull, prog and punk, and it helped me to break free of the musical constraints I grew up with. I hope you get a similar opportunity. Because you're here I think there's a good chance.
And during all this time Ian Anderson would have preferred to be farming salmon.....

I like the playful pun on my last name.Putting that aside,I have seen so many inferior songs by 60s and 70s legacy artists slightly to hugely overrated whereas many other deserving artists from all of modern rock decades not getting the fair recognition they deserve.

For those under 50 (geez)...once upon a time, RnR use to be an experimental music form...flutes and all.

Today...nah. All ya get now is the formula of "thud and drone", boring, monotonic, souless, hookless.

RnR...RIP.

Great old Tull song. Very glad to hear this pop up on RP once in a while. The haters should give the old JT stuff a chance before casting their condemnations. It's a little different but isn't what you want anyway?

Easily my favorite Tull album, then and now.  "Teacher" is still a standout track among standout tracks.  Benefit just may be a desert isle disc.

Way back then, I bought this on the strength of "Teacher," and wasn't too disappointed—as I recall. At some point Reprise runs a contest either through Rolling Stone or local radio: first one to submit the total time of Benefit wins something. Easy, right? Here was the catch: on the original pressing of the album, there are no track times. I imagined then, and even now methinks, the suits at Reprise getting a chuckle out of very-stoned-and-very-confused-hippies trying to figure out the track times. I thought then—and I think now, "Fuck them."

Just gonna pop in to say: "Damn, why does Jethro Tull sound so good to me?"
Well, my parents had the albums—-but I did not overhear it. I'll give it a 9.
Yes. Godlike for 42 years now. Sick to say that. But was there then and there now too.
this is always the godlike track for me.
clearly didn't help with this song however..
I've always liked Martin Barre's guitar work - especially his tone.
