His goal in life was to be an echo
Riding alone, town after town, toll after toll
A fixed bayonet through the great southwest to forget her

She appears in his dreams
But in his car and in his arms
A dream can mean anything
A cheap sunset on a television set can upset her
But he never could

Remember to remember me
Standing still in your past
Floating fast like a hummingbird

His goal in life was to be an echo
The type of sound that floats around and then back down
Like a feather
But in the deep chrome canyons of the loudest Manhattans
No one could hear him
Or anything

So he slept on a mountain
In a sleeping bag underneath the stars
He would lie awake and count them
And the gray fountain spray of the great Milky Way
Would never let him
Die alone

Remember to remember me
Standing still in your past
Floating fast like a hummingbird

Remember to remember me
Standing still in your past
Floating fast like a hummingbird

A hummingbird
A hummingbird

i love this one, contrary to popular opinion.
and this is my fav album of wilco next to yankee hotel foxtrot, and may surpass that for me.
I'm a Wilco fan, but this one doesn't do much for me.

Jeff Tweedy came off as a huge cack on the documentary I'm Trying to Break Your Heart. I'm not sure if that's truly representative of his personality, but that's how it seemed.

I think this is inspired by a Henry Miller book, called "Stand Still Like the Hummingbird" I'm okay with that...
From this disc, I'd love to see Theologians and Handshake Drugs added to the list.
It took me a long time to get into this song, and album too. But I really dig it now. There's a lot of songs I now consider 'timeless' that I wasn't really into the first few times I heard them. Funny how that works. c.

Sounds like a combination of any Randy Newman song and, the "Cups and cakes" song from Spinal Tap. Not that there's not anything wrong with that...
yeah, there's something beautifully reminiscent about the piano in this song. 70ish, maybe 60ish. Queen's Killer Queen and other theatrical sounding numbers?

I do love these guys and lo and behold, RP didn't turn me on to these guys initially. It was Austin City Limits! But Bill has furnished far more of them to me over many months (and many more to come). Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo are also so good as precursors to Wilco and the wagon that went down the other road. Gettin to really dig this alt country thing.

I've tried several times to get into this CD, but so far no... this song is good, but as a whole, I'm just not feeling the CD yet. On the other hand, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" just worked for me right from the start, I didn't even have to try. Wilco has a problem, and that problem is they've already created their master work... nice problem to have, though!
Glad to see someone else feels the same way I do. I have listened to YHF many times, but this album only gets listened to when a song comes up on my ipod.

I'm a Pepper, he's a Pepper, she's a Pepper, we're a Pepper, Wouldn't you like to be a Wilco fan too? Nice homage to "Honey Pie" there near the end as well. Yet another from Tweedy and co. that I enjoy. This band hardly ever misses.
Wilco, big favourite of mine.. Always producing outstanding music.

Wilco is love. Twisted, co-dependent, broken-hearted, sweet, rocky love. But, all in all, Wilco is love.
They are. Nicely put! I've been a fan for a long time and am so pleased to hear them here.
There is not a more relevant, talented, earnest, thoughtful band in the world right now (grandiose comment, I realize). And you love them even more if you know their story.
Just a tad Beatlesk so I give it a 10. Gotta love a band who can sound like modern Beatles.
Someone should upload "Theologians"! LOVE this whole album. Their show in New Orleans was really great!
Saw these guys recently for the first time. Great show!
...and what a contrast to "At Least That's What You Said".
The more I listen to this album and this incredible song, the more I think that Wilco has to be one of the top talents out there.....Not simply a critics darling, they are the real thing.....
Wilco has completely reinvented their sound on this album while still retaining their roots. The addition of Nels Cline on guitar has tweaked out their sound in a good way. This song is definitely more old style wilco and reminds me of their mermaid avenue work.
great live show
