This is a nice and unexpected coincidence, I just made myself an espresso after many months of abstinence - I sat down in front of my desktop and... and this song. 
This is just one of those songs that when it ends… You wish it would keep playing! 
Love Mark Knophler's guitar work. Master of the hammer-on.

When this lp first came out I lived in Rehoboth Beach, De. I worked at a restaurant in Dewey Beach, The Rusty Rudder. I worked with some hard partiers. On many nights we wound up, after the bars closed, at a friends house that had the best stereo system All top of the line, turntable, receiver but especially the speakers! They were 2' square and about 6' tall. When he put on "Making Movies" on he put it to "10"! It would run all of us out of the room, but he did it almost every night we went over and he just grinned ear to ear and bounced around. It was the off season so noise complaints were there, but not as numerous if he did it in the summer. What a great album, it brings back many great memories'.

Mr. Knopfler rules! I could watch him play all day. Learned everything I needed to know about Ray Kroc listening to Boom! Like That.
Man, this still sizzles, doesn't it? The growling guitars, the almost Springsteen-like piano and tempo, and his impassioned vocals; wow!
Mark doesn't need to steal from anyone, but sure sounds like Layla in the beginning.
I still say that Alchemy's versions are better. This is simpler, cleaner, and indeed a pleasure to hear once in a while, but I prefer the unleashed energy of the concert.

A solid album all the way through. No filler.
Toying with a "10" rating here. May be slightly due to sentimental adoration for this album and song. The relentless upbeat tempo. Knopfler sounds so "into it"! And of course...The guitar. The guitar. The guitar. I'll leave it at "9" for now. But...wow. This song makes me so damned happy!!

Totally original and like-able. Dire Straits was the buzz.
I can't believe how many posters think Dire Straits were lacking originality. Perhaps you had to be alive in the late 70's, but I recall first hearing Sultans of Swing, and being totally blown away by its originality. This is a first rate band and this is arguably their best album/CD. It helps immeasurably to have a particular significant other that you can relate many of the songs to. Goodtimes!
Yes, I remember hearing these guys when it first aired. In my high school art class(where we got to listen to the radio!!) and Sultans of Swing came on and nearly everyone stopped and looked at each other like- wow! NOthing like it ever before.

I always love Knopfler's guitar work. There's a guitarist named Greg Koch who has also mastered that great staccato picking style.

I never liked Dire Straits after their first two albums —— however I have a great admiration for Mark Knopfler in his solo career.

This was a fantastic album. Fave tracks were 'Tunnel of Love' and 'Romeo and Juliet'.
I find the vocals not very melodic. DS is so overrated.
