When you sing
When you sing
The stars fill up my eyes
Galaxies pour down my cheeks
Galaxies
Galaxies that flood the street
Galaxies
When we dance
When we dance
Eels and seagrass float on by
I'm ten thousand leagues beneath the sea
ten thousand leagues
ten thousand leagues
ten thousand leagues beneath the green
ten thousand leagues
When we kiss
When we kiss
Bears and boulders vibrate through the air
Gravity is dead you see
All I need is beating red
No gravity...

Galaxies pour down my cheeks

Her voice reminds me of Emily Haines of Metric (that's a good thing).
Another artist I would not hear on commercial radio with it’s SSDD

She looks like a poster girl for the Dewey Decimal System, and she rocks! A most agreeable combo there.

LOVE HER! Whole album and Warp & Weft is great!
Man, it's been a year already since the Case Lang Viers tour came to Dallas and what a great show it was Time flies!
Absolutely 10!
First time I'm hearing this. Who needs gravity? I am floating through the galaxy.
10!
This song is a perfect example of the fact that lyrics don't have to mean anything at all.
digging this

Starting to like this... a 6 for now, we'll see what happens.

I went to Carleton at the same time as Laura and as far as I know, the school doesn't offer a major in geography. Perhaps you meant geology?
Either way, nice to hear a Carleton alum on RP! And yes, it is a really good school.

I got geography from the poster I quoted. Wikipedia lists her academic focus as geology and Mandarin, courses of study, no doubt, that have been indispensible to her music career.
I'm happy to see that she has released an EP of acoustic folk, Two Beers Veirs , and is working on a new LP, July Flame.

Laura must be pretty smart, though...Carleton is a top-ranked school in Northfield, MN, the town where the James gang had their demise. I'm glad they still offer majors in geography.

She does the female vocal on The Decembersists' heartbreaking Yankee Bayonet on The Crane Wife. She's well worth seeing live. She does a really great solo set with delays and pedals creating multi-guitar and vocal tracks.
this ordinary looking girl's voice backed by grungy guitar licks is interesting

First heard this cut on a free Paste CD. Nice! Laura is a 1997 graduate of Carelton College in MN, where she majored in Geography. She made the cover of their alumni magazine this month! Now that's success!
With that kind of success, who needs a Grammy?

thanks for the celestial set again Bill
it's making me want to burn a themed cds set or 3
Nice!
Laura is totally Indie in sound and by all appearances! Magnificent!
She could try to look a little more Indie on the cover of her album, but it's a nice song )))))

The Flaming Lips - Vein of Stars
Moby - We Are All Made Of Stars
Pretty standard, decent emo. But from a chick! For me, enough to raise it from a 6 to a 7.

I started at about at 3 too; now it is at a 7. I doubt it will get higher as the chorus is a bit on the annoying side.

LOL. I've always had a major thing for librarians.

Just heard this again and i've had to up the rating from 7 to 9. I know, sounds a bit crazy but it's really grown on me. Plus I think she's kinda cute in a school teacher type of way !

Love it. Love Paste. Thanks RP. Laura and I are having a cup of tea before we go back to information architecture.

Paste ROCKS!
Most definitely! I've been a subscriber since Day 1 - Victoria Williams and Mark Olsen were the cover for that one. The samplers have always been great.

Liked it when I first heard it. So much that I bought the whole CD from iTunes. Now I am sick of it. Happens sometimes....

Same story here. I bring it to work after I am through reading it and put it in, well, let's say a place where a lot of reading takes place. Several of my freeloading co-workers will send me email asking when I'm bringing in the next issue for the "library."
Great magazine.

I like very much. (I actually saw her in concert before recieving the Paste sampler)
When we kiss, when we kiss
Bears and boulders vibrate through the air
This number is pretty cool: liked it the very first time I heard it.

Another good song from a Paste Sampler.

I have this Paste sampler too - the whole thing is awesome. The very first time I listened to it, this song caught my attention. I like it! Especially her voice and vocal choices - as well as the "siren" or whatever it is effect. Love the way she sings "When we kiss..."
At first I thought it was Cat Power... however this sounds quite nice.
I thought her first album was better. Check out the song Rapture.
Dork! Cool tune, though.

This tune has every bit as much excitement as the artist is showing in that cover photo.
If she's bored, imagine how we feel.
Just because neither the music nor her cover have her bouncing off the walls means that she is bored. Perhaps, with having a physics teacher as a father, she is a more "low-key" person. It doesn't mean that she doesn't make nice music. Sometimes I like thrash metal, but usually I like relaxing, pretty music - which is exactly what this is.
I'm trying to figure out the accent... the pronunciation of "galaxies" in intriguingly weird.
This is fun. I knew her (slightly) years ago when I was in college. Her father taught some of my physics classes and sometimes had students over for pizza. I remember a cute, skinny little kid, but I don't remember her singing. It's fun to see that she is making it big!
As for the music, I kind of like it. I didn't think much of it at first, but it has really grown on me.

cracking tune
but typo alert, it's Veirs not Viers BG
Gawd, I mist be the only one who found this plodding and repetitive in a really yawn-inducing way. Just awful.
beautiful lyrics
" a thousdand boulders vibrate in the air" and the award for best lyrical metaphor goes to....
I have another of Laura's albums...her songs aren't always coherant, but they are quirky and groove me. Just like this song does! Nice addition!
This is a cool song and the album overall is very tasty!
I like it, so far...
I always liked being first. Good office music, nothing that wows me but nice.
Her voice reminds me of Emily Haines of Metric (that's a good thing).
I totally thought this was Emily Haines. Jumped on here to rate it and discovered that I already had!
