I often avoid percussion especially xylophones; scary haughty clappers but great in back of complex music.

I've listened to this tune in headphones and there's something seriously wrong with this tune on the sound left/right balance. Made my ears hurt a little. It was ok otherwise, just wanted to let you know why I downvote it.

This song was released a couple of years before Puente's "Oye Como Va", but a lot of Latin rhythms, modes, and scales have been around for quite a while - it's not as if there was one guy who "invented" the genres.
That may well be, I was not yet familiar with Cal Tjader, but "Oye Como Va" is by Tito Puente.
Acording to AMG he's 2 years older than Cal Tjader, and started recording 2 years earlier.
I don't know if/how these two influenced each other, though.

NO "less inspiring tunes" on RP; lots of less inspiring ears, however.
thanks bill, this makes up for lots of the less inspiring tunes you find.

It is almost like "Oye como va?" by Santana....Owesome !

According to AMG, Tjader was a significant influence on Carlos Santana, so the reference is apt. I remember this from high school—haven't heard it in years. Thanks, Bill!

Prefer vibraphone over saxophone. Like this.

It's never to early for Martinis! I recommend Duke's hotel St. James, London. Quote "Our Martinis are like a woman's breast, one is too few, three is too many..." and with 1/2 bottle of vodka in each and every one, I can confirm that three is definitely too many.
Ps my name is Mack and I am alcoholic, but I don't drink neat Tobasco, or other chilli based sauces - .
I prefer the Cadogan, and Vodka Gimlets. Ahhhhh

Man, Cal has been around just about forever and a half. Don't hear much from him. Except here, of course.
Always disappointed when this comes on and it turns out not to be Oingo Boingo.
I think I heard this at an Automat once. I was getting some pie.

Such an infectious groove. Awesome! 10!
Mine's a Martini please
Sabor! I dig it.
Forget cowbell. More xylophone!

Try hitting a 'keyboard' with four mallets at that speed without missing a lick and reconsider your rating if below an 8. Cal was master of the Latin groove on vibes just as Lionel Hampton owned the instrument in the traditional jazz genre.
Repent ye naysayers.
Digging this.

Great stuff. There's a wonderful remix of this on one of the Verve remix collections.
Another fun song for the workday. chachacha. 8.
A bit of The Monkee's "Early Morning Blues and Greens" in the percussion.
