And for all of you commenters running about shouting "plagiarism!" why don't you take the melody from Pictures of Matchstick Men, write some new lyrics that are truly relevant, work out a new orchestration, and toss in a little of your own inspiration, perform it mistake-free in a recording studio, ... and then you'll see why I think these guys demonstrate their talents this way.
Making music isn't easy — if it was, I wouldn't be an engineer — and placing the constraints of a familiar melody on your imagination probably makes it even harder.
As always, IMHO.
Yea & i certainly wouldn't pick engineering again if i had my time over. It's a rubbish job (well, it is if you have British 'management' anyway).
There are only four tunes in the universe - 'Knocking On Heavens Door', 'Sympathy For The Devil', 'House Of The Rising Sun' and 'Comfortably Numb'. everything else is one or other of them. Discuss.

I was not shouting plagarism and only one or two times ever here have I suggested that. I just hate the idiotic line "everything is derivative of everything else". Not sure if you meant me or not anyway. Being derivative is not the same as plagarism and it is a valid criticism and something that should be avoided.

I understand the point. I get their schtick. I just don't care for it. Pop culture can and usually does inspire artists to embellish a style or genre...I just don't think its particularly interesting. Just my unpopular opinion.

I like this band and it has potential...especially if they try NOT stealing ideas and trying to make them theirs. How blatant is this to "Matchstick"...and the other tune sounding just like "My Sweet Lord"? Like I said...potential people...potential. Plagiarism isn't something to be too proud of.

Their old running mates the Brian Jonestown Massacre were not as pleasing to the ear maybe, but at least they were creative.
There is a huge difference between a sound/style/mode that a group goes for, and a specific melody. Melodies are not "derivative of everything else", as we hear repeated here on this board ad naseua - they exist apart from style, in their own sphere. They can be appropriated, and it is unethical to do so. There is nothing less interesting to me than "style", even though there are thousands of bands that litter the musical wasteland who go to market almost exclusively on style. It keeps the musicologists in business, that corporate teaching factory. My definition of a musicologist: someone who lacks the talent to write a good melody. Talent is the rarest thing in the world, when it comes to writing melodies.

When a song is derivative of several songs that are (in turn), quite derivative, does it become something original?

The ONLY talk radio that is worth listening to is Thom Hartmann show. And he is from Portland too, like the Dandies. Coinkadink?
It's a complete rip off and Status Quo should get some kind of credit on the Dandy's album cover under the title "extreme influence by". All that aside, I went to see them in Dublin the night before last and they were really, really good. They played for two hours solid!

I'm a regular RP listener, and this is the first time I've heard it. You might think it's overplayed because you're confusing it with other Dandy Warhols songs, which all sound basically the same.

They've always been a short walk from a novelty band. With this they've arrived, and seem to have purged that pesky creativity along the journey.

I'm a regular RP listener, and this is the first time I've heard it. You might think it's overplayed because you're confusing it with other Dandy Warhols songs, which all sound basically the same.
It's already overplayed.

IMHO, Bill does an excellent job programming.
Sounds like you're at risk of becoming burned out.
Maybe you should take a listening break or pass sometime over on the LRC.
Just a friendly suggestion.

It's not just "the same chord progression" as Pictures of Matchstick Men — it's the EXACT SAME TUNE. I hope they gave a writing credit to the Status Quo.
Meanwhile, I'll be listening to my 45 of the original. Why, I must be a thousand years old!

Holy crap,I thought the EXACT same thing. Same two songs came to mind the moment I first heard this song. Not necessarily a bad thing....
Speaking of CVB I would love to hear "When I Win The Lottery" on RP. I love that song.

No New Tale To Tell + Pictures of Matchstick Men = this song!
(Also, this is my first time hearing this on RP. Don't know where I've been. It's not like we have RP playing during all our waking hours or anything.)

Pictures of Matchstick Men anyone?

You're showing yer age, but you're absolutely right.
Still like the tune, though, and this band.
Well, maybe not showing his age. Camper Van Beethoven did a killer and popular cover of "Pictures of Matchstick Men" just a few years ago. Then again, I'm old enough to recall the original...
Isn't this cheating? I like Pictures of Matchstick Men better, if you can compare 2 different songs with the same chord progression. But, I'll have to admit that this isn't bad and maybe it's ok to revisit songs that no one young is likely to have heard.

A touch of Type O Negative in there too...
pictures of matchstick men,
over and over again,
over and over again,
over and over and over again
You don't have to be old to know that this song has the exact chord progression and feel as "Pictures of Matchstick Men."
i like those Dandy's but let us give a shout out to Love and Rockets!
Can these guys write anything other than three-chord infinitely-repeated songs?
Boo ya, there we go
Too much talking on the radio
You ya hey
That's right, a party got something to say
(also, it's 4 chords)
