The rooms were so much colder then
My father was a soldier then
And times were very hard
When I was young

I smoked my first cigarette at ten
And for girls, I had a bad yen
And I had quite a ball
When I was young

When I was young, it was more important
Pain more painful
Laughter much louder
Yeah, when I was young
When I was young

I met my first love at thirteen
She was brown and I was pretty green
And I learned quite a lot when I was young
When I was young

When I was young, it was more important
Pain more painful
Laughter much louder
Yeah, when I was young
When I was young

My faith was so much stronger then
I believed in fellow man
And I was so much older then
When I was young
When I was young
When I was young

Seriously. How is this not at least an 8 when recognizing how it has stood the test of time for over 50 years? I was around 12 years young and I recall how powerful this song was then, albeit like most truly great songs, overplayed for at least 25 years. Thankfully RP recognizes truly strong songs regardless of their history of airwave abuse. Thanks RP.
This starts to sound like bombastic tripe after the third time through the chorus.
Love the Eric

I would guess the "yikes" refers more to the appalling lyrics ... I recall getting stoned in Manchester (UK) to this LP around 1972 and although the music was fine we were creased up in giggles at the tortuous words e.g. Yen to rhyme with Ten... oh dear....
Would guess that this song was heavily influenced by the Vietnam War.
Badass.
Love the raw guitar tone. Very influential on Tony Iommi, BomBiNo etc...
Love this song, especially

" I met my first love at thirteen

Reminds me of when I was young. Really.
I just realized that I need to get into The Animals much more. Awesome.

"I smoked my first cigarette at ten

I guess if he had smoked his first cigarette at nine instead of ten he could've had more choices for a rhyme in the next line (pine, time, crime, Newcastle upon Tyne, serpentine, etc.) .  At least he didn't wait until eleven or twelve to smoke - he really would've been hard-pressed for a rhyme.  Anyhow, great tune; I'm surprised there aren't more Animals' tunes on the playlist.

That analysis is too hilarious! Thanks for sharing.

Hardly. These were my teen years, and they were good years, especially the music. The Animals were one of the first to bring in a blues orientation, along with the Stones. Sure, there have been huge steps made in technology and guitar musicianship, but you have to put things into historical perspective. For that time, they were a very good group. YMMV.

Well it is either as Fred says or possibly (being really charitable here) that as the band hailed from the north east of England, an area known even today, for it's inability to speak the English language, it's simply some quirk of their local dialect, a mix of Scottish, Norse and Yorkshire. Then again, maybe not.
I'm a BIG Animals fan.....not this crap however.

I heard an older guy covering this song at the Sausalito Art festival. A silver-haired guy who you would think rode a Harley. I thought, "how pathetic for an ageing band to cover this song". Then they launched into House of the Rising Sun, and I thought, "whoa, this could be the real McCoy", and it was. {#Clap} So I stayed and enjoyed the concert, just like when I was young. {#Dance}

For the folks badmouthing Mr. Burdon's song-smithing: He performed here at one of the obligatory annual festivals small towns in the south have to justify the salaries of the local booster organization staff. Turned in a workmanlike and energetic show for a guy hired to flog history. Best moment of the night: substitution of "I was such a know-it-all-green-punk when I was young." Laughed at himself, sang and played well, had a good time while delivering the same to a crowd of maybe 1500 souls. Aging well, Mr. Burdon.
The hi-def version of this album is quite nice for any audiophile fans out there -  from HD Tracks.

Dude! You need to lighten up. That's a lot of three and four syllable words for someone who just likes to hear themselves talk! You're totally missing the point, bud! But that's okay! You'll figure it out!

Whoah, the memories! Sitting on the front porch, maybe 6 or 7 years old, seeing the neighbor boy come home from the war, wounded and newly forever with a limp, and my dad telling me -- who wanted to go and ask him what happened -- "Hell, he probably doesn't want to talk about it, don't you dare!" and then his sister was crying a lot in those days after that, and she kept playing The Animals, her favorite group.

Reminiscent of Auden:

WHEN I was one-and-twenty
I heard a wise man say,
Give crowns and pounds and guineas
But not your heart away;
Give pearls away and rubies        5
But keep your fancy free.’
But I was one-and-twenty,
No use to talk to me.
When I was one-and-twenty
I heard him say again,        10
The heart out of the bosom
Was never given in vain;
’Tis paid with sighs a plenty
And sold for endless rue.’
And I am two-and-twenty,        15
And oh, ’tis true, ’tis true.
What he said.:-)
More Eric Burdon please!

This was a little different from a lot of the sounds that were being played at the time.  Really nice to hear this again.
This song was my anthem... when I was young. And now today, at 60, it returns as an anthem of my elder years.
Pickups, Keys, Animals - 30/30 Nice way to wake up
A 10 on the nostalgia scale. I remember sitting in my bedroom wondering, ¨what could this possibly mean?¨, when I was young.
Very, very nice!

yen - Noun

(1) A longing or yearning

"She always had a yen to be a writer."

Not a bad rhyme, just arcane. . .

Haha, I always hated that rhyme, too.

I'm over it now, tho. The 60's, it turns out, had LOTS of bad rhyming. It's all good...the point of this song is that we were more passionate stuff in our wild youth, and me not caring so much anymore about the details of lyrics from that era constitutes a perfect example of this.

Eric's still out there singing this song.  Its point is truer now now than ever!

NEXT 10!!!

What a great song for the ages. Eric Burdon was so far ahead of the times. Songs he wrote yesteryear are just as relivent today as they were then.

Love it{#Drummer}
A seminal song in the formation of my POV, a self-reflective one, that guided the formation of my life in the years that followed.

I was so much older then.

This could have been the anthem for the political activism of the period.  Demographics meets the politics of an Empire.

One of the first "best of" LPs I bought back in '66 or so. I was also pretty green at 13, especially after smokin' my first ciggies.
