You will find no wicked way in me
Look me over, you will see
You will find no weary change
I'm worn and wounded,
but still the same

Whoa……
Let me tell you the truth
I love you more
Than the sins of my youth

When the past gets up in your face
Memories slide out of place
All those things that were hidden away
Ain't so bad in the light of day

Whoa……
Let me tell you the truth
I love you more
Than the sins of my youth

You say you love me
wish you'd like me more
I'm no angel that's for sure
Said you forgave me,
each time I was caught
But you still paint me as somethin' I'm not

Whoa……
Let me tell you the truth
I love you more
Than the sins of my youth

I love you more
Than the sins of my youth

The lyrics have me scratching my head.

"I love you more than the sins of my youth"

On the face of it, it would appear that Mr. Petty is proud of the evil things he did as a kid. Am I missing something?

Your confusion has me scratching mine. Do you think by "sins" he means things that harmed other people? He probably meant the normal drug taking, drinking too much etc that we all do. Ok, most of us do :-D
Interesting & excellent!  Not a typical Tom Petty song!

I saw Tom Petty as a teen in 1982 at the US Festival in California.  To see him still producing pop music in 2014 is incredible and is a truly exceptional accomplishment for any musician.  Tom Petty deserves more recognition for his decades-long endurance, unlike most other pop musicians who seem to lose their creative edge after one or two hit albums or who simply take the money and run.  Tom Petty is not the best, but has consistently put out "pretty good" music for decades.  Gotta love him for that, if not for the music alone.

This is his worst work.  He sounds so whiney.

Most certainly sinful  of a song.  And Terrible.

I can accept that. Thanks!
Tom Petty? Or Adam Sandler?

Exactly the same for me.  This is very well-said.

Bitter Sweet

Thanks for playing all these songs so thoughtfully, Bill.  Each one is beautiful but so sad right now.  The sadness will not pass quickly, but the beauty of his music never will.  Thanks for everything, Tom.
Like so many great artists, Tom Petty had many early hits that became FM radio standards as well as the cornerstone of his live shows.  Yet he never became an oldies act, he was always kept writing new stuff.  Both Mojo and Hypnotic Eye are excellent records that stand up to any of his previous work IMO.

I was lucky enough to see Tom and the Heartbreakers twice, and was hoping to see them at least one more time.  I'm just a guy six years younger than Tom and I feel like I lost a best friend.

Rest in peace Tom.  Thanks for all the great music and collaborations that you graced us all with.
I wasn't sure I could listen to TP today but I'm actually really appreciating have him so deftly slipped into the playlist every now and then. Thanks, Bill.
*double sigh* I love this song.
We will surely miss you, Mr. Petty...
First time I have hear this track .. Dean hides his head in shame ;)
I could swear this plays every week, but it says right there 1 play in the past 30 days.  Radio Paradise seems to do strange things to my memory.  Tom Petty still sounds good even after 33 years.
yeah.
Looking forward to seeing Petty in Atlanta in April 2017.

He sounds a bit like Adam Sandler in this song...
cool song man

Well, he loves the person these lyrics are addressing more than he loves his "sins", so the unknown variable is how much he loves that person.  Vexingly, the lyrics don't elaborate on that.  If he only has a nominal fondness for that person then he would have even less admiration or pride for the sins of his youth.  I guess I'm reading too much into this.

It's muddy, but he seems to be saying that it would be easier if she just "liked" him. But she loves him, he loves her. But she also knows about his past and seems to be holding it over him. If they're going to go forward with the relationship they need to be equal, and he's going to quit hiding the sins of his youth; let everyone know, deal with the consequences, and then they can have an honest relationship. It will be hard, but he loves her enough to do it. And you thought you were reading too much into it.

Not usually an artist I enjoy, but this track grabs me.  Clever stuff.

Same here. A 7 for this one. Normally they end up with a 4 or 5.

I was happy to read that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were nominated for a grammy this year.

Hypnotic Eye is one of 5 finalists for Rock Album of the Year.

for what that's worth.

Disagree entirely. He sounds as relevant as ever to me. Perhaps it's just you getting old and stale?

Thanks for taking a stab. It looks like we have reached the same conclusion after approaching the question from different directions.

I really don't care for this, which is surprising since I like most of Petty's songs.  Oh well, chalk it up to a failed experiment.  If you never try anything different, you'll never get anywhere new!
This song certainly has merit, but it strikes me as incredibly overplayed right now on RP.
I think that this is a very tasty and cool collection of jams from TP and the HBs. It's so great that they are still rocking out! Thanks, RP!
.                       ...isn't evolution a good thing...
Really a great recording.  Can't figure out how they got the super-cool vibraphone sound at about 2:00 - must be a wall of sound.
Everybody in my mushrooming multitude of homeless camps loves this song...

What a very-very disappointing album (in comparison to the AAA-class previous one).

Stunningly "flat" - some good guitar-work, great production, but the song-writing is way below par,
given Petty's true class!

I give the album no more than a 6 (previous one a 9 - with 5 songs on it being a 10)

Well there's no accounting for taste or lack thereof.

This isn't bad; it's good when he steps out of his routine stuff.
Sounds like lounge music. Terrible. Lyrics, maybe o.k.

I went to the Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers concert last night in Vancouver. All I can say is if you get the opportunity to catch a concert on this tour, it is fabulous. Get there early as Steve Winwood is the opening act!  {#Bananajam}

The new album is great. Some real rockers on it. Hope to hear more in RP.
Never thought much of Tom in my younger days, but he has grown on me. He's been creating some really good material in recent years. I can tell he's someone who's lived a bit and seen a few things, and I appreciate that, having lived a bit and seen a few things myself. Nice song.

I've never been a huge Tom Petty fan, but I'm diggin' this album.
So far so good, Tom is and always will be one the real ones. Keep em coming

This Album is officially released today!  Another purchase to make.

I wasn't always a Tom Petty fan, but over the years I've come to realize what a fine songwriter and performer Tom is.  I just watched the 4 hour documentary "Running down a dream" last night.  Four hours!  And I was never once bored or not entertained by all the different styles of music he has played with various artists over his long career.  Truly an iconic American artist.
