How can you be so certain that you're the one flirting with fire
If each choir needs preaching and everyone's reaching into their pockets to see what they got
If not a lot has changed but if everything's changing
Blame to see you sin but no one sees face-to-face or eye-to-eye
This is not how it has to end

Who wants to be one step ahead
First to the punchline
Just one step ahead
First to the punchline

When it feels like it's all closing in
All the lines we won't cross, we'll bend instead
Never mind all the noise going through your head, oh
'Cause every time we talk we say the same things that we say
So never mind all the noise going through your head

How can I be so certain that my first impressions are mine
If each morning I wake up with circles around me that say
"I got mine, I give in, I give up, it's too much"
"Come on, let's give them hell!", no, "Why not love?" you say
"Be too hard and there's not enough in this house of cards"

Who wants to be one step ahead
First to the punchline
Just one step ahead
First to the punchline

When it feels like it's all closing in
All the lines we won't cross, we'll bend instead
Never mind all the noise going through your head, oh
'Cause every time we talk we say the same things that we say
And every line we cross, we say the same things that we say
Every time we try, we play the same old games, it's all been said
Now, never mind all the noise going through your head

I thought it was quite a bright, cheery tune. In stark contrast to your comment.

Learn how to use the "skip button".  ...problem solved!   ...that way you can spare us from your drivel!  A lot of RP listeners like this tune.

It's yours to use as much as any of us!!
LLRP!!
RP should add some of the Wheeler Brothers to the playlist
Similar sound.  Awesome
Dude’s a laidback John Denver!
I like the style & vibe but, yeah, it gets kind of repetitive in the songwriting department.
I like Michael Franti. Also Trevor Hall & Nahko.
LOL! U noticed! Though Chad Smith is a great drummer & Flea’s no slouch. .sfoster66 wrote:

Look, all music obv isn't going to be for everyone, so it is honestly irrelevant that I really can't stand his music. BUT it was super nice to read of his environmentalism in his bio.
The only JJ song I like.

For people scared of Sublime.

I don't know why people get so down on Jack. He's one positive dude with a guitar. If people lived by the sentiments he conveyed in his songs the world would be better place. Him and Michael Franti should run for President and Vice President.
12 plays in 30 days?

pop crap

It's painful it's so bad. Years drop away from my life when I hear him.
RP is the only radio station I listen to because I LOVE it, but every time a Jack Johnson song comes on I can't ask Siri to play the next song fast enough. I don't understand why he gets play here. His music is so saccharine in its attempt to be popular.  How can we take somebody seriously who writes a song called "Bubbly Toes"?
Jack Johnson was was a very controversial & successful black boxer during the early 20th century.  Ken Burns did a multi-part documentary on him that periodically plays on PBS.  If you get a chance to view it, it is a "Must See"!  The documentary won many awards!

Kinda digging it...

a little heavier than the JJ I'm used to.

... and that's a good thing!
This pop artist is now on RP?  Nooooo,

Guess you showed them who's boss, eh?
Some of his very best work. Just pure Jack.

wasn't a big fan until I saw him live this past summer. my birthday present (that I wouldn't have chosen, but a nice surprise). he is possibly better live for those who haven't had the pleasure

I can't believe we're listening to Jack Johnson now. It's like RP was bought by Clear Channel, especially with the daily tracks by Radiohead and Alt-J, which is what CC does by turning all their stations into the same four musicians over and over. But Jack Johnson? Seriously?

I will always love Jack Johnson because of the smiles he brought to my little lad's face whilst we watched Curious George when he was a little one.  Always feel that same fondness.

Other than the faux "reggae/ska" beat in this song, I don't really hear much resemblance to "Mirror In The Bathroom".  The two songs have very different melodies and chord progressions.  Everyone hears different things in songs though.
I for one am glad *William* is playing NEW Jack Johnson.  I know a lot of folks find it repetitive and/or cheesy, though I've always had a fondness for how Hawaiian his music sounds; barefoot and unrushed, enjoying the day from sunrise to sunset.  I'm at an 8 on this one; LLRP!!

Song title is One Step Ahead: would that be a coincidence?

Yep. Just for future reference, today is 5-18-22 or 2022-05-18 and I'm pretty sure this isn't the very first play. Love Jack Johnson. Hate the new "time stamp" or lack of - format.

Never heard this guy before although. Giving it a 5 for the hint of slack key in some of the guitar work. Otherwise, kinda heard this all before, IMHO.
