This type of 'ambient' seems intended to slow the mind.  Those long, long LONG chords, and the way we 'expect' them to progress---waiting and waiting for that expected chord change, while the tones meander around, not QUITE resolving. And the soft but very high pitched drone tones, sort of like a blank canvas for this audio artwork. 

The 'tension' that it seems so necessary to resolve musically...the mind starts searching for other ways to do so.  "It is not the spoon that bends, it is we ourselves".  <-- paraphrased from one of the Matrix films. 

"A vampire creeping up the stairs"?  My mind's eye considers those high definition JWST images of nebulae,  galaxies visible through them, and 
star nurseries.  We are now more aware of these  momentous cosmic events.  Seemingly eternal, frozen in time,  in reality a continuous process unfolding at a pace we struggle to understand.  

 

I heartily agree there are many subgenres of ambient music, and thanks for listing those other sources!  They sound well worth audition.

SomaFM has not just one, but six unique channels devoted to ambient music: Drone Zone, Deep Space One, The Dark Zone, Mission Control, Synphaera, and Doomed (for Halloween only).  


Meanwhile, DI.FM has nine "ambient" stations, though only four are similar to Soma's line up: Ambient, Space Dreams, Psybient, and PsyChill.  

Without any additional variety of artists on tap, the station might as well call itself "Rule 42" because that's all they're playing right now.  

This is too dissonant to be "serene." Feels like vampire is coming up the stairs....
