I leaned back on my radio
Some cat was laying down some rock 'n' roll soul, he said
Then the loud sound did seem to fade
Came back like a slow voice on a wave of phase
That weren't no DJ, that was hazy cosmic jive
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile
He told me
Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie
I had to phone someone so picked on you
Hey, that's far out, so you heard him too!
Switch on the TV, we may pick him up on channel two
Look out your window, I can see his light
If we can sparkle, he may land tonight
Alright
Don't tell your poppa or he'll get us locked up in fright
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He told us not to blow it
'Cause he knows it's all worthwhile

Let the children lose it
Let the children use it

Let the children lose it
Let the children use it
Let all the children boogie

To my ear, the problem with this cover is it's like a rote reading of the lyrics that has no sense of connection to the meaning, mood, or emotion of the song and is just an exercise in production. Not every cover of any given song is automatically bad, however, a really good one is very hard to do, and of course will always be judged through the subjectivity of the listener/public.
But I'm sorry, this one is a stinker.
The Beatles were the best at covers. Great covers of their originals too.

And unnecessary...
I wish someday Garbage will release a track where the dynamic range isn't compressed to death
SO true - great music that is compressed and "boxed in." This track is different enough to make it interesting for me.

We have Butch Vig's side-to-side, front-to-back, top-to-bottom, end-to-end overproduction to thank for that...
But for a copy it's not bad, for me a 6.
