Dolan, archbishop since 2009, led the nationâs second-largest diocese amid challenges like clergy abuse settlements. Hicks, 58, shares Midwest roots and missionary experience with Pope Leo, signaling a shift toward unity and compassion in U.S. church leadership. The change highlights tensions between conservative U.S. bishops and Vatican emphases on immigration and human rights.
MAGA supporters will view Dolanâs removal as a direct rebuke from Leo, clashing with their nationalist priorities. Dolan, a vocal Trump ally, praised figures like Charlie Kirk as a âmodern-day St. Paulâ and aligned with conservative causes on abortion and religious freedom, earning him favor in MAGA circles. Dolan embodied U.S. church conservatism, hosting Trump events and critiquing progressive shifts, his removal is an attack on Trump-aligned Catholicism.
Catholic ideology and MAGA are diametrically opposed. Leo is pointing that out and taking a stand.

That is not an entrance through the Vatican wall. Who's clueless now?
Look in the mirror, that's your answer.
See the round bulged part on the right in Scavino's photo, a white overlay that purportedly shows Saint Peter's square enclosed by Scavino's imaginary wall?
Now click here to see the nonexistent wall, and concrete bollards that Mr. Pippin is photographed standing at.
The pope talks a good game about the poor, living in a palace with his own army and retinue of servants.
Trump knows you can't go all that wrong bashing the pope. Even many Catholics don't trust the pope and the church hierarchy, after covering up decades of sexual assaults on children and other moral failings.
And every newspaper in the world gives him free publicity.
I can't predict who will win the election, but I can predict that a war mongering lover of torture and the mass murder of the poor will win the election, because the voters would only elect such a person.
The voters like to blame their leaders for all the wars and inequality, but they voted for it over and over and over again. You can't say you favor peace and equality, when you vote every four years for more war and more inequality.
To be fair he does seem to be working to reform the Catholic Church, but the church has a lot of glass windows they have acquired over the years so he should be careful throwing rocks.
I wonder if the pope would agree that an institution that covered up serial child sex abuse is not Christian?
That is actually a fair and legitimate question not to mention the arsenal of weapons the Vatican is holding. To be fair he does seem to be working to reform the Catholic Church, but the church has a lot of glass windows they have acquired over the years so he should be careful throwing rocks.
Wow. Those tweeters are moronic and show their lack of knowledge. There are 5 entrances in the walls to the Vatican city and all have heavy security. You can't just walk in there unchecked. Equally it is extremely hard, in fact virtually impossible to get citizenship. The fail is definitely coming from the pope.
I wonder if the pope would agree that an institution that covered up serial child sex abuse is not Christian?
I could write a long essay about this Pope versus Trump situation, but I think it will be funnier to summarize it instead. What follows is – as far as I can tell – an accurate description of what happened.
1. The Pope criticized Donald Trump.
2. The Pope’s credibility declined.
If this were fiction, no one would believe it.
I predict that the Pope will issue a public apology to Trump for questioning his faith, as opposed to his policies.
