i blame the west
in the mid to late sixties home run treats were home made shortbread soul cakes, popcorn balls or chocolate chip/oatmeal cookies
store bought? reese's, snickers, almond joys and paydays
no marshmallows, hard candies or gummy stuff

I used to have an H mart around the corner and a lot of Asian customers, so I've seen some of them. There is an orange one that is great and a green tea yuzo that was good. I think there are 3 or 4 green tea variants. There is a Saki that is surprisingly good.

Kit Kats are great. The Japanese love 'em. If you want your mind blown, go into an H Mart and check out all the different Kit Kat varieties offered in Japan.

I prefer Reese's peanut butter cups. Don't know the variations on them but I gather they exist.

When I was a kid, a full-size Snickers was the grand prize.

From the rabbit hole:

In 2004, the green tea flavor was introduced.<7> Since then, the product has been sold in more than 300 seasonal and regional flavors.<1><2> The top-selling flavor of the candy bar in 2010 was soy sauce.<5> Nestlé attributes the success of the flavor varieties to the tradition of omiyage, in which regional specialties are brought back for family and co-workers from trips away.

Soy Sauce?

In a shocking bit of cluelessness... my cousin lives in a town that now has an arms race at Halloween.

Full-size bars....King-size bars... thousands of dollars on candy.

Knowing that you can score a full nights candy in a few houses (if you know where they are...) kids from all over the area now flock to the town.

I was surprised at the total for a couple bags of treats too. I'm not so much for the chocolates, but I do like the kit-kats.

Speaking of - general conversation here today, does anyone remember the 'say no to drugs' and 'nope to dope' messages on lemonheads and a few other candies back in the 80s-90s?

Although, with the average candy bag costing $16-$18; I think I'll just give money and buy a coupla tootsie pops for meeself.

The Best Candy to Hand Out to Trick-or-Treaters, According to Kids
“There is a house in our neighborhood that sets up a table with whole bags of a single brand of candy and kids get to pick the one they want, though I watched a kid choose a whole bag of Dots over Smarties last year."

In honor of these scary times and the leader of a not so free nation I’m going with Circus Peanuts.
