Yonder come a glad man singing a song
About a soldier want a boot and a fallen angel
Naked as a fish at night
About a sad man climbed up a willow bough
And the cops are on the fence around the dog in the manger
And the mouth of the river is wide
Wide
Wide

Yonder come a glad man singing a song
About the bushes by the gas pump gone to flower
And a constant star collides
About a sad man saying: "they've forgotten how"
And a baby quit sucking when the milk went sour
And the mouth of the river is wide
Wide
Wide
Wide
Wide

About a sad man lost in the hammock sway
When the bridal gown came mama spit out the window
And the cops said: "the dog won't bite"
And the sad man's saying: "they've forgotten when"
And the blood running black in the valley shadow
And the river running all the while

Yonder come a glad man singing a song
About a lover rolled over, said: "you must be tired"
And the truth coming towards the light
About a sad man knocking on a chapel door
And a burned out boat called ''"Tried by Fire"''
And the mouth of the river is wide
Wide
Wide

Wow, haven't heard this in a long time! Reminds me of Cynaera.
Wow. A surprising number of haters for poor Sam. He seems like a pretty inoffensive guy, just doing his acoustic folk thing.  Not to everyone's taste to be sure but the vitriol is surprising. Or perhaps not: haters gonna hate.
absolute drivel

Ditto... this is great stuff.  RP has always nailed it with folksy acoustic rock.  I've always worried seeing them stray into stuff like Rosalia.

Yes, that's a 70s song by America. Yes, I am old.

I'd love to see that go in rotation maybe once a month. I think the listeners would go wild.  I mean that too is folksy acoustic rock... it fits!
I am so glad this is back in rotation.
Sounds like a bad TV show Theme in the 80's to me...
Sorry, don't mean to hate on it, just does nothing for me personally...
For me it just seems to noodle nowhere and those really annoying Woo Hoos! Afraid I really didn't enjoy.
In years past I really used to like I&W, but I just can’t listen to him any more. Tastes change I guess

As indeed has your taste in both Sam and Alanis. Ah well they do say it takes all kinds to make a world. I am very pleased I do not occupy your vanilla world.
YES.
NO.

It's funny that at least two other people seem to agree with you.  To me this song sounds nothing like America's "Tin Man" at all - not the tempo, not the melody, not the chord progression - nothing other than both songs having acoustic guitars.
Bill is kicking it today with a great playlist.  One of SD better albums.
Ugg!  I'll be Glad when that Man stops Singing.

Definitely sounds like L&M....this song makes me feel like everything's Ok...no mater what.

Yes, that singing voice did sound a little like Loggins.
This is brilliant!
There's something about this song that feels incredibly hopeful, celebratory... at peace with things, however those things may be. I'm not sure I can put my finger on why that is, but I know I smile whenever this one comes on, and have to turn it up and sing along. Thanks for playing it, RP. It always brightens my day to hear it!
Is that a real vibraphone? I've had a soft spot for vibes since Ruth Underwood played with The Mothers.
wow... did I think this was Loggins (and Messina),  quite a different sound from Iron & Wine.
This one is definitely a "grower" I'd have to say.  I heard it many times before it really grew on me, and now I am a huge fan.  Thanks for showing me Iron & Wine RP!
Bounces along pleasantly, but not exceptionally. Maybe it's a grower.
Makes me feel good every time I hear it.......
This is such a lovely, summery song.
great set, beautiful tunes where even reading the lyrics can be uplifting
Well, I like this. It reminds me of Bruce Cockburn circa Dancing in the Dragon's Jaws.

I could have dittoed what you said---i'm glad there's good music in this world, I hear a lot of complaining but find great stuff on here and elsewhere in the last decade.
going to be adding this sweet little baby to my pod...cheers R.P.

I can't listen to this song without thinking about your comment, Jelani.... I think it only adds to the absolute joy I feel when I hear it (it's on my CD player in my Sidekick now, and I can't seem to get past it - I just keep hitting "repeat.")  Today was a day off - I went in to work, but my boss said the temperature wasn't going to be warm enough to warrant watering the greenhouse and nursery plants, so I collected my paycheck, banked it, and played. The sky was so blue, the air so warm, traffic was moving slowly, as if they wanted to savor this blessed glimpse of true spring after all the rain, wind, and snow...

And I listened to this song, over and over, and I sang to it. I sang.  I haven't actually sung to a song for a long time, so the voice was husky and raw and off-key at first, but as I drove, I kept singing to the "woo oo oo oo oo hoo oo" chorus, and every time I did, I thought of you and smiled.

Holy cow.  I have a SOUL, and it's sorta happy now! {#Sunny}

It's really odd, I was scrolling through the comments looking for a reply from Cynaera on a comment I'd made on this song, and came across this.
This wasn't what I was looking for; I had never seen this comment until now, and now it has started me crying.

Cheers Cynaera...
Gave it a 6. Sounds like a modern Kenny Loggins song.

A very well expressed opinion. I disagree but found your post quite interesting.
Not sure about this one.  Kind of a poppy sound, different from what I&W I've heard previously.  Was across the room when it came on, thought it might be an obscure Loggins-Messina song from the 70s.

I give in - what's an "asshole-flag"? My sympathies - family's always a trial and an embarrassment, eh?

It's my personal term for when someone cuts loose and becomes a total jerk. It's like that line in "Almost Cut My Hair" by CSNY - "Feel like letting my Freak-Flag fly..."  Instead of being a freak, my brother is an asshole on occasion. And yes - what little family I have is a trial. Seldom an embarrassment. I love them to pieces - it's just that sometimes, things get tense.

Thank you for your sympathies. Can I just save them in a file folder and use them when I seriously need some sympathy? That'd be so cool...

When this comes on I always think it's Lola (The Kinks) until the singer comes in. Funny, even the delivery of the lyrics is similar.

 fredriley wrote:

Fred, I believe it is closely related to the ass-hat, with either the flag's pole firmly planted in said ass or as in the ass-hat, one's head.  Either one is a comical visual with just a bit of imagination.

Check out the Iron & Wine Tiny Desk Concert on NPR's channel at the Tube of You. Nice.....

Just one guy in Iron&Wine, but he's brilliant enough for several mere mortals.

I hear shades of Bruce Cockburn's "Creation Dream", it's almost like the xylophone (?) player is playing the exact same awesome riff. I also agree with the Kenny Loggins comment. Bruce Cockburn, Kenny Loggins and Sam Beam, thumbs up!

This is really great
I read that CD title and somehow instantly picture someone that looks like Zach Galifianakis licking someone else much like how a cat cleans itself off after eating.

I was just going to make that comment...   I'd like to hear Samuel** do a cover of some early Kenny Loggins since he is spot on for the vocal range and timbre.

** I just learned Iron & Wine is a guy named Samuel Beam...

Sounds like a top 40 Barry Manilow ripoff...

I don't know much about Iron & Wine but what I have heard here. Most is tolerable but doesn't grab me.

I really enjoy the mood and especially the real accoustic mallet percussion, marimba I think, maybe xylophone.

Thanks RP for another gem.
I didn't know these guys were so versatile. I love the retro feel on this one.

That's nice.
Thank you,and good for you oo oo oo  oo oo oo hoo.....

At the risk of repeating myself, I love this song to pieces. And today, it's perfect for me. My brother has decided to let his asshole-flag fly, and I'm seeing a side of him I've never seen before. It's directed at me, for some reason. I'm sure there IS a reason, but he's with his best friend, so I'm guessing he feels empowered and emboldened to say things to me that he's never told me before. I had no idea I was such a monster.

So - I've retreated into my bedroom to lick my wounds, and this song was playing, and even with all the ugliness around me, this song made me grin and consider that maybe I'm not such a monster, afterall.  It'll blow over - stuff like this always does - but in the meantime, I'm cooking a turkey, repotting vegetable plants, cleaning litterboxes, doing laundry, and caring for two sick cats. I guess I should include "keeping my mouth shut" in there somewhere, since nothing I say is acceptable to my brother since his friend arrived.

Bottom line:  I'm SO grateful for this song, because it helped me through what could have been an emotional shoot-out with my brother. I'll tuck in - keep an eye on the turkey, maybe water some outdoor plants, and survive.  Thank you, RP, for this song. I cling to it on days like today.
