(Michael Stipe)
Fall over myself
Don't mean to interrupt
I was miles away
Things I forgot
Are the footstools of God
That's how I behaved
I frighten myself and folded my hand
As you talked to God

I love the way you dream (9x)

Even my most base complaint my sweet
My aims were lower
And even though all my restraint my sweet
My aim was clumsy
And even if there's only one thing I want for you
I want for you

I love the way you dream.

I love the way you love the way you dream, one for me one for you
One for me, one for you.

It’s not arabic
This, Bowie's Dark Star, and Ferry's Olympia are the big Three, to me

RIP. Maxi Jazz. It would be nice to hear some Faithless.

This album was introduced to me by my closest friend at the time, and became a turning point in my life when I was really at rock bottom. Time heals, friends move on, but emotions never leave, even if you wanted them to.

I got the DVD and it is interesting and thought provoking. I need to watch again. I wish there was a way to play all the chapters and not choose each on.  The music is excellent, especially on the JBLs with a Parasound amp.

Sounds interesting ... until the moment Michael Stipe comes in. He spoiled it.

Hi everyone, this is my upload. The song was indeed already in the playlist, but it was the single version, which is only 3 minutes long. I've proposed to Rebecca the "full version" (8 minutes) which comes from the album. It is longer, but far more interesting and beautiful IMHO. :)

Thank you, Red Dawn!

I love this full-length version of this song. Thanks for uploading it!

Here is a translation of at least part of the (admittedly rather obscure) lyrics:

"You have Adhikara (ability, choice) over your respective duty only,
but no control or claim over the results.
The fruits of work should not be your motive.
You should never be inactive.
Whenever there is a decline of Dharma (world order) and the rise of
Adharma, O Arjuna, then I appear (or manifest myself).
I appear from time to time for protecting the good,
for transforming the wicked, and for establishing Dharma, the world order."

And one bit at the beginning that was lost in the segue is:

"Only Silence remains... because I have to listen to him...
I have to listen to the silence... I have to experience him."
 FrankMc wrote:

That girl sure has one utterly irritating voice.

Traditional Indian female singing (I hesitate to say which language since India has over a hundred), is typically high-pitched. I hate to say that it has always bothered me as well, but it fits this song very well.  I like this longer version.
My favorite sanskrit word in this tune is "duskrtram."
No idea what it means, just like the way it sounds being sung by the vocalist.

I'm sure I have said it before but,
understanding the language being sung can have zero impact on whether I like it or not.

Those who don't like kitsch?
Definitely the long version: worth the extra time. This is the first time I have heard this go on for so long.

If not for Stipe vocals, this would get an 8 from me. As it is, I give it a 1.

This is one of those songs why i love RP, This is one of those songs that i would never hear on any station i listen to.
Listening to RP makes me realise how narrow minded my musical pallet was.
Thank you Bill for your broad range and interest in cultures!!

You don't have to guess at the language. Just look it up. Google "the way you dream one giant leap" and you'll find out that it's Michael Stipe and Asha Bhosle. Google "asha bhosle" and you'll find that "Asha Bhosle is an Indian playback singer and an entrepreneur. She is best known for her playback singing in Hindi cinema, although she has a wider repertoire. Bhosle's career started in 1943 and has spanned over six decades. She has done playback singing for over a thousand Bollywood movies.

Apart from Hindi, she has sung in over 20 Indian and foreign languages.[8]

Born: Asha Mangeshkar, September 8, 1933, Goar, Sangli, Sangli State, Bombay Presidency, British India (present-day Maharashtra, India)...Asha is an excellent cook and cooking is her favorite hobby. She often gets flooded with requests by Bollywood celebrities for kadai ghosht and biryani dishes and has rarely turned down a request. In fact, her paya curry, Goan fish curry and dal are very popular with the Kapoor family of Bollywood. Once, when asked in a The Times of India interview, what if her singing career had not taken off, she said "I would have become a cook. I'd have cooked in four houses and made money." The love of cooking got Asha into a successful restaurant business. She runs restaurants in Dubai and Kuwait called Asha's. Asha's offers traditional north-western Indian cuisine."

So, probably Hindi, but maybe some Maori in there too since she's pretty well-rounded as far as languages go. I have no idea what Maori sounds like, so I'll go look it up!

Update:

narainmg says: What Asha Bhosle sings is a verse in Sanskrit. Hindi does derive a lot of it's vocabulary from Sanskrit.

So there you go! Sanskrit! Whew. Now we all know.
Soothing song while the rain comes down.

Often , when "long version" is part of the title, it ends up a little monotonous, intended as filler.  PSD

From your statement, it seems that you believe one can only listen to things that come from the same world as oneself. Might try a different radio then...

Definitely a Scarecrow song. All by itself & outstanding in it's own field
Very good music. I like it.

just listened to the whole album for the thousandth time. it is ALL outstanding. solid 9

i really like dead can dance too! fela kuti. expensive shit.
One of the coolest things I got to experience by traveling all over the world was exposure to music of other cultures; Bravo, RP for this!

I concur. Excellent world album. Love Eddi Reader's contribution on other songs. This makes Michael Stipe tolerable. Recognized it by the first notes. Just brilliant melange.

"Passion" (feat. Michael Franti) is a personal favourite (along with this track)  This album has so many different styles on it, but they just flow together so well!  I'm sure if you give it a listen you will find something you like.

Thanks for playing it Bill!

Add "Daphne" to your rotation.  My favorite song.  The DVD version is better than the one on the CD, but I'll take either!  Wonderful concept album.  So much better than "What About Me?" (the 2nd 1GL release).  I hope they have more coming!

This is exactly why I listen to RP - I've discovered SO MUCH since making this my daily station.  You won't hear beauties like this on mainstream radio!
R.E.M. is an awful dated college band that thinks they are gods. Yes, I've met them and seen them plenty since 1984. Not one good thing to say about them. I turn off anything with Michael "Tripe". Whine all the time.
Phenomenal concept album. (DVD is cool as well.)

I was sure that I had already commented on this, but it seems I haven't.  So, thanks Mr Riley, I agree with you entirely. ↑9.

ps amazing album

Ignorant and inaccurate comments become annoying. I've listened to RP for years and could count the Arabic-language songs on the fingers of one hand. Maybe you just mean 'forn lingos'? Neither is every "thirs" (sic) song in a foreign language - for the millionth time, don't exaggerate.

I know no Arabic, but the sound of it is distinctive, akin to Hebrew as both are Semitic languages. Very gutteral. The Hindi (I think) in this song is as close to Arabic as Gaelic is to English, or French is to Japanese.
cool tune bill, ya

I've always liked this "collaboration". Just yesterday friend of mine posted the simple comment of "I Love Dreaming!" and I said, "And I Love the way you dream!" I then went to share a video and found there are as many strange and weird version of videos as there are in the versions I heard of the song.

Peaceful, and thanks for the translation....
Bad song, annoying.
Happy Solstice!
I've long considered Stipe, a great writer and lyricist, a middle of the road vocalist, akin to, say, Jagger. They have voices suitable for what they do, but you wouldn't ask them to join Ella for a remake of the Gershwin songbook. These voices are their most telling on quiet passages—you can't shout your way through something you have trouble singing. Stipe's voice on this song is surprisingly melodious, a good thing.
Perfect song for my Friday evening unwind from a hard day at work..

What a voice. When Maoris in New Zealand are being tattooed by the old method, they use her singing as pain relief. I prefer it without the pain.
I much prefer the shorter version of this

LOVE IT!
Won't have a word said against this lovely track.......
...really enjoyed the first part.  But at the end it becomes a techno song?  I like plenty from that genre, but it seemed out of place at the end of that song.
Both rating as volume control are at "9".
this does nuttin for me
I definitely prefer this version to the other one in RP's library. Much prettier, and Michael Stipe sounds vocally smoother in this version.

What the hell...? How did I miss this? Two gorgeous and completely unique voices. Thanks again for digging out a little gem I would never have heard otherwise.

This is a GREAT album. I bought it a few years ago after watching a late night tv show about how these guys basically just toured the world picking up all the music as they went around. So for example, the two singing parts on this track were recorded totally separately. Its a really good album to introduce people to new music, if for example they would normally only listen REM or to Robbie Williams, who sings on an earlier track.

I try to be open minded about other peoples taste in music and it's extremely rare that I ever post a negative comment, but this thing gives me the most incredible headache. Please, please, please, if you have to play this, go back to the 3 minute version. Thank you.
My God!  It is still going!!

I always go to make a cup of tea when something awful comes on.  That way, I don't have to hear it and the chances are something decent will be on after.  I come back and this mindless, repetitive nonsense is still £*$*ing going!  AAARRGH!

On the plus side, I have finally figured out to get the pound sign on a Czech keyboard.  Silver lining and all that. :)
Thanks Bill & Rebecca - a truly beautiful and classy track.
