When I go don't cry for me
In my fathers arms I'll be
The wounds this world left on my soul
Will all be healed and I'll be whole

Sun and moon will be replaced
With the light of Jesus' face
And I will not be ashamed
For my savior knows my name

It don't matter where you bury me
I'll be home and I'll be free
It don't matter where I lay
All my tears be washed away

Gold and silver blind the eye
Temporary riches lie
Come and eat from heaven's store
Come and drink and thirst no more

So weep not for me my friend
When my time below does end
For my life belongs to him
Who will raise the dead again

It don't matter where you bury me
I'll be home and I'll be free
It don't matter where I lay
All my tears be washed away

Jars of Clay plays a great version of this - check it out!
The Devil may have the best tunes, but the godsquad do some damned (sic) fine songs  :o)
More Wrecking Ball, More Lanois,  More Teatro, More Achtung Baby.
Take RP to the next level Bill!

That's Daniel Lanois with a bass guitar, I'd say.

Really? I think it's a bass guitar. And it is one of the main reasons I really love this song.
Even though I'm not a devout Christian, this would be nice to hear when I'm about to die.
love this one more than original... more emotion in the voice {#Hearteyes}

Love listening to ELH, especially when her voices get into the range when she sounds like bells ringing.  This song, for one.
Love Emmylou.  This whole album is fantastic.

I think this just got bumped from an 8 to a 9......never get enough Emmylou.....
She's beautiful, and a good teacher.
It's been said before, but bares repeating - check the original by Julie (and Buddy) Miller.  I love this song and the whole CD but can only give it a 7 because I need room to rank the original version even higher
Holding back putting a 9 on it.... Wow ELH !
Loved her then, like her better now that her voice has dropped a half-octave and gained  depth.  (pun not intended)
gotta 10 it, she is so solid cool

I operate by feelings and instinct and you got this feeling of old school dignity, this respect for American music, inside her house. I knew there were hidden secrets there that I was not hip to and I knew I’d come out of doing that record with something that I could learn from. That was the driving force for me.

“She played me a lot of songs that she had in demo form. The best ones were the ones where she was sitting there on her own with an acoustic guitar. She was embarrased to play those ones, but I knew when I heard them that this was the album. I’d put a mic in front of her as she sat in a chair and bring in other people around her in a horseshoe shape. That was all it took.”

Excellent post - thanks for this insight!

Not a big fan of hers, but this tune is excellent!
ELH is a national treasure.

Could not agree more.  I've always loved Emmylou Harris, but Wrecking Ball has DL written all over it, in a very good way.

Great quote below about the feelings he experienced when visiting Emmylou's house ... would love to read the entire account, if there is more.

Yep, I'll second that. I think the something it goes to show is that all good artists have the ability to surprise us. I thought much the same of Johnny Cash as you of Emmylou Harris - all crass sentimentality for men with tattooed necks and grubby denim jackets set to clanging guitars - but then I listen to RP and find that he's put out some half-decent stuff that never seems to hit the radio. It's nice to have your expectations shattered and to be astonished at what someone you've written off can come up with.

?

Are you asking why she named the album "Wrecking Ball"? (One of the songs on the disc is a Neil Young track, "Wrecking Ball")

OR

Are you just asking for the definition of a "wrecking ball"? (eine Abrissbirne auf Deutsch). political cartoon showing GOP wrecking ball destroying Obamacare building with jammed door

Amazing how hard it was to find an image of a wrecking ball without Miley Cyrus perched on one...

Once when I saw ELH and she was about to sing "The Maker" she said that Dan woke her up and revitalized her career.
I tried posting this before, went nowhere, disconnect, bummer, trying again.
A great rendition but prefer that of julie & buddy miller. Grindier, gloriouser. Julie sang bkup for emmylou. Buddy a big singer-songwriter  in his own right & doing the rodney crowell thing w/julie.  btw these 2 use more tambourines than I have ever heard except under a tent. You are warned.
Wrapping myself in this "americana" vibe like a cozy shroud. More, please
One of the best duet albums ever is when she teamed up with Mark Knopfler. All the Roadrunning
FYI Dan is touring these days, doing a studio on stage kinda thing. https://daniellanois.com/tour/

She does a very inspired rendition.  Makes this timeless song even more so.
I agree--Emmlou is our national treasure.  Can't really say she is underrated bcs she has collected many, many accolades.  I hope the next one is at The Kennedy Center and it is The POTUS hanging the highest honor we can bestow on an artist around Emmylou's neck.

Oh, and yes, Daniel Lanois seems a blessing to any artist fortunate enough to employ his talent.

we're singing about real freedom here.

I agree this is a wonderful sound and moving lyrics, but I had to look them up...I can't discern a thing she is singing; am I the only one?  Love it, nonetheless!

I'm looking forward to her concert here this summer with Steve Martin.
LOVELY!
Love this whole entire album!
Never a voice like Harris, never a producing visionary like Lanois. Together, this song and this album shine like no other! Also check out her cover of the John Prine song. I think Bill regularly plays the Lanois song 'Blackhawk' from this collection.
Saw EmmyLou Harris perform this whole album with Daniel Lanois last summer.   Absolutely amazing!

love this daniel lanois album
Emmylou's voice is so wrong that it is absolutely right.
I was determined to not like this, because Emmylou is so everywhere... But darned if I don't love the song, and I'm wondering why I didn't buy "Wrecking Ball" when it first came out. I was stupid, but I can be taught.  Emmylou Harris has talent that she demonstrates, and then she has secret talent that she keeps close and trots out once in awhile, just to remind listeners that they don't really know the full scope of her abilities. *Note to self:  NEVER play against Emmylou Harris in poker.*

Beautiful!!
Great song, great voice, she is one of the top world's voices.

The Daniel Lanois effect helps this differ from like many, many other female artists...the boomy bass part could have done a few less triplets and been less fancy and it would have been perfect. Nice song.
