I wanna live, I wanna give
I've been a miner for a heart of gold
It's these expressions I never give
That keep me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old

I've been to Hollywood, I've been to Redwood
I've crossed the ocean for a heart of gold
I've been in my mind, it's such a fine line
That keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And I'm getting old

Keep me searching for a heart of gold
You keep me searching and I'm growing old
Keep me searching for a heart of gold
I've been a miner for a heart of gold

"... his best works to date are neil young and everybody knows this is nowhere ..."

This is incorrect - his best and most underrated album was On the Beach.

That does not make you unusual.
Extra special in light of his principal resignment from Spotify. Luckily still to be found here on RP in a quality he would approve of ;)
Jesus, stop the whining! Neil Young is so goddam overrated.
I can't tell you, but ome might understand

Agree. In particular it's these words that to me suggest that interpretation...

i'm somewhere between the cynicism and the passion of later neil fans. i've always loved his music, but his best works to date are neil young and everybody knows this is nowhere. then it sort of either mellowed or became really shreechy, and i love crazy horse. but the first two are the crown jewels much like big pink for the band . . .
naaaaah-naaah-naaah-nah-nah-nah-naaaaaah...
I think I just realised something -I think he's talking about his own heart, not finding someone else who has a heart of gold.
Simple, yet effective.  Who cannot relate?
This may be my earliest memory of being haunted by a song that I could simply not hear enough. Just a kid...
Learned the blues harp, and guitar note "hammering", using this song. Good thing it's simple! Many happy memories associated with this song.

Yup, always had you pegged for an ignorant populist.

Cheap energy for the people!    (Pump fists....)

Yes, Coloradojohn, to this day and to the end I never forget Neil's haunting voice floating around and filling the outdoor stadium, echoing off the sky.  You have not "heard" Neil until you have heard him live.  If you don't "understand his voice" you will find yourself changed forever more (and I mean that in a good, good way) once you have experienced him in a live venue watching him play in his miraculous way, but more so, singing in a mesmerizing voice that I cannot adequately describe.  That has been my closest lifetime nirvana.

Hmmm, Im not religious nor a NY fan, but I wonder what options remain if "godlike" was your minimum.

Sweet Neil {#Heartkiss}

Can't stand Neil Young. Whiny whiny whine.

Neil has really upset a lot of pro-bitumen people up here in Canada with his anti-oilsands, anti-pipeline and honour the treaties tour.

It is amusing to watch.

Oh Helgilein - you make me soooo sad!

I really thought you had some taste!

Your remark, the song was a "commercial success" is..., is..., just beyond words!

I stumbled across the radioplay version of Hitchhiker late one night in high school when I was supposed to be sleeping. Giggled all the way through. The TV version seemed utterly humorless and generally crappy, though.

The movie, however, was quite funny. Wish they'd make a sequel...

One of the first songs I learned on my guitar - never quite mastered the harmonica bit though :)

Neil Young - "Heart Of Gold" Live-acoustic (1971)
Live from 1971. Neil digs around in his pockets trying to find the right harp and then plays a new song...Heart of Gold.

"I absolutely adore this song and Neil young himself. And to all the beiber comments, fall back- the kid grew up listening to all that pop stuff and is signed by a pop hiphop artist ofcourse he's gonna make shit unmeaningful music but why the hate? It's obvious the s are jealous of his success, I strongly dislike his music but I'm not gonna hate him for it. It's all he knows. Hopefully he gets his hands on some dope and he'll realize the shit he's makin."

"When you dis music from the past, you dis our history, the people who made it, the thoughts and feelings of that time. Most importantly, you dis yourselves, because the music from the past paved the way for the music you worship today. Someday in the future, someone will dis the music you like now. So, why hate? Appreciate what's there, culture progressing the ideas of human beings."

Very well said!

This is the first song I remember being overplayed on our little AM station. Before that I probably didn't listen to the radio much, but for whatever reason I had the radio on a lot when this came out, and it got played several times a day. Totally ruined Neil for me for years after, even though I basically liked the song fine. Years/decades went by and I listened to a lot of Neil, both on purpose and just because how can you not? and got to where I enjoyed a lot of what he did, but never really thought I needed to ever hear this song again. I still have never heard the album. Mostly I liked the Crazy Horse stuff, even have Arc + Weld and actually listen to Weld once in a while. Metal Machine Music pt 2. But Harvest Moon made me think maybe the solo quieter stuff is okay too, and now, today, I was actually glad to hear this. So hey.

This song will always remind me of the Drive-in movie theater
This song has been played twice? Strange. 9
