They're all still on their honeymoon
Just read the dialogue balloon
Everyone loves you, why should they not?
And I'm the only one who knows
That Disneyland's about to close
I don't suppose you'd give it a shot
Knowing all that you've got
Are cigarettes and Red Vines
Just close your eyes, 'cause, baby
You never do know
And I'll be on the sidelines,
With my hands tied,
Watching the show
Well, it's always fun and games until
It's clear you haven't got the skill
In keeping the gag from going too far
So you're running 'round the parking lot
'Til every lightning bug is caught
Punching some pinholes in the lid of a jar
While we wait in the car
With cigarettes and Red Vines
Just close your eyes, 'cause, baby
You never do know
And I'll be on the sidelines,
With my hands tied,
Watching the show
And tell me, would it kill you
Would it really spoil everything
If you didn't blame yourself
Do you know what I mean?
Cigarettes and Red Vines
Just close your eyes, 'cause, baby
You never do know
And I'll be on the sidelines,
With my hands tied,

That is one of the coolest concert moments I can imagine. With Aimee Mann? Amazing.I love the Rutles (the first one, the sequel sucked a big one), and C&O is the best song Neil wrote for The Rutles soundtrack.
You hear the one about Harrison frowning after listening to one of Neil's songs and saying "that's a bit uncomfortably close, Neil". LOL!
My favourite Aimee Mann story is that I saw her opening for World Party in London nearly 20 years ago. Half way through her set she invited Neil Innes up on stage with her. I was probably one of a handful of people there that night who knew who Neil Innes was. Then they played Cheese & Onion from the soundtrack to The Rutles... "do I have to spell it out? C, H, E, E, S, E, A, N, D, O, N, I, O, N, S, oh yeah" Genius.
One of my most unexpected concertgoing delights ever.

This is one of those AM songs that sends tingles up my spine. Thanks Bill.

Very nice!
Thumbs way the 'f' up!
One of the loveliest of songs to hear when sitting at the window looking at the sunny breezy world outside -- oh the places her voice goes!
Aimee! Everyone in my head loves Aimee!

Good song. At least she's not one of the breathy pubescent little girl whiney voices. Now, this is a VOICE!!

beautiful angst and nostalgia, and pains from an old wound.......
One of her best songs!
This tune of hers doesn't have too much droning...which is a good thing. I like Aimee Mann...but really prefer ANYTHING from her first solo record..."Whatever" over this stuff.
Dammit I have my coat on, but I can't turn off the computer and leave until this song is over.
She's a damn fine artist, and not hard to look at either.
One of the good female singer/songwriter i really like!

Epidsode # 3 of Portlandia on the IFC channel Amiee is working as a maid because the music industry is doing so badly. It's probably available somewhere online. Awkward and hilarious! There's also another surprise cameo too. Shows that at least two female artists don't take them selves too seriously....
I was walking down the isle at the drug store yesterday and saw some Red Vines laying in a shelf of Twizzlers (funny in itself), but immediately this song popped into my head for the next hour...

Ah now I know what Red Vines are...
Thanks folks!
Thanks folks!
L.A., wherever you are, I remember our days of Red Vines and lightning bugs. Hope you found love and happiness.
Argh! The songs are good but her delivery is like nails on a chalkboard......the nose, the nose.....
Must blow my nose.

Aimee — as with many artists, she has stuff that I like and stuff that I could never hear again. Red Vines is one of my favorite tunes for driving around in the evening with the top down, watching the world slip by.....

Liking this song is a sort of guilty pleasure for me. I have no idea why that is.
Calling it Quits is the genius track on this CD, for me. Poetic, matephorical, ingenious, dreamy production. An entirely visual song.
Aimme, the imaginary love goddess of my dreams.

She played a small venue in Santa Cruz recently and was fabulous. Second half totally dedicated to requests. Three people played a stage full of instruments. Best show I've seen in a while.

Great song even though cigarettes disgust me! There are very few Aimee Mann songs I don't like.

Holds up as well as any other track from Bachelor No. 2, and arguably her whole catalogue. 9.
Loved her in the 80's and still love her now. Cool voice, not like so many other female musicians that try to all sound like Alanis for some stupid reason
<insert pinky toe allusion here>
That is all.

I totally agree with you. When the song started I thought, "My God, has Karen Carpenter been reincarnated?"
?? ! Marilyn McCoo, Eva Cassidy, Kendra Spotswood, a.k.a. Sandi Sheldon are in the same stratosphere as Karen. Aimee hasn't made it to the foothills yet.
ever hear her talk? I'm from Boston too, so I know a thing or two. She sounds like one of those clueless dipshits who think they are some sort of "intellectual" and talk this sort of academic drivel, hoping no one is really listening.
Moe, another beeah heeya, for christ's sake!
I love her imagery and the way her lyrics weave through the melody. A Very well crafted tune.
All this time I thought she was saying "cigarettes and red wine." I bet you could make a sweet (I didn't even mean that) cigarette holder from that red vine candy stuff...
everything's different now'??
...but same quality!!!

Ok, as long as no Brit bands start singing the virtues of Devonshire's clotted cream.

What I love about Aimee Mann is that she is pop, yes - but with (as we say in the law) "something more." She started with Til Tuesday, after all! :-)

Wait... if this was so pop, wouldn't it be in the Top 40? Can't imagine this song there.

I heard an interview with Aimee in which she said she liked her voice enough but she can't really push it to get a different effect. It lends a certain sameness to all of her songs. Fortunately for me, I love her sound, but I can't listen to a whole album at home because it bores the other natives in the house.
Cigarettes + Red Vines = Crazy Delicious? ;)
I really like her voice.

Aimee is one of those rare songwriters who defies the death that constant playback brings. It's been several years now, and there's not one of her songs that I've heard "once too often."
