I heard you sing a rebel song
Sung it loud and all alone
We can't afford the things you say
We can't afford the warranty

Well I see you walking in the glare
Down the county road we share
Our southern blood my heresy
Damn that old confederacy

It took a
Long time to
Become the thing
I am to you
And you won't
Tear it apart
Without a fight
Without a heart

I'm sorry for what you've learned
(Learned)
When you feel the tables turned
To run so hard in your race
(Race)
Now you found who set the pace

The landed aristocracy
Exploiting all your enmity
All your daddy's fought in vain
Leave you with the mark of cain

It took a
Long time to
Become the thing
I am to you
And you won't
Tear it apart
Without a fight
Without a heart

It took a
Long time to
Become you
Become you

The center holds so they say
(It never held too well for me)
It never held too well for me
(The center holds so they say)
I won't stop short of common ground
(That vilifies the trodden down)
That vilifies the trodden down
(I won't stop)

The center held the bonded slave
For the sake of industry
(Ah)
The center held the bloody hand
Of the execution man
(Ah)

It took a
Long time to
Become the thing
I am to you
And you won't
Tear it apart
Without a fight
Without a heart

It took a
Long time to
Become you
Become you

It took a
Long time to
Become you
Become you

In Britanny we tell "Degemer mad thanks to american people     we don't forgetten you     sorry for my half english :)     LOVE
Ha!

I working right now on an essay entitled:  "The American Civil War, Today’s 'Great Divide', and What’s Next".

These lyrics are quite timely.

Something is cosmic.

I envy their succinctness.
Pennywhistle: Perhaps because it's about America at its historical core and reminds you of Yankee Doodle. A stretch perhaps, but it's sure catchy.

I'm getting the impression that guys just can't stand gay girl bands, no matter how talented they are. Issues there, eh? Long live the Indigo Girls!

But not ALL guys!  I, for one, love this duo!!

And as for the homophobes and racists out in the world, know that your ilk, like the dinosaurs, are dying off, albeit much more slowly.  The reason those folks like to rant so loudly, is largely because their chorus line is decreasing in size, so they have to scream louder to maintain the same volume.
This is beautiful music. Period.

I like Indigo Girls, but the mouth-shape gymnastics requires to rhym “things you say” with “warranty” just doesn’t feel right in any accent.

It's not a rhyme, it's assonance.

Plus, there harmonies are quite, quite good.

And this is second song they've done with a fife or penny whistle.
Cryptic lyrics.  Ya gotta listen and then read them and think about it.
Love it - takes me back to Friday evenings in Billingborough. A great time!!
Well, I like this just fine. And I love the Indigo Girls. And after listening to the upbeat melody, interesting instruments (penny whistle! accordion!) and graceful harmonies, and smiling and bopping along to it, I just read the lyrics. Oh... not such a happy song after all. {#Eek} {#Frown}

(But I still love the Indigo Girls!)

What a great argument!  This line of reasoning works so well in all kinds of situations when you don't want to actually get into the substance of a different point of view.  And as a bonus, the more they deny being racist/sexist/lookist/etc, the guiltier they look!  Win-win!!

So that one stung, huh?

Blech!
Please consider playing more of this album. It's a GOOD one!

Heck, this song has fife playing. Fife playing!

Agree. Music notes don't carry sexual identifiers.

no secret how much I LOVE Indigo Girls! Way back before they had "made it", I would hear them around Atlanta, and they inspired me to live my life honestly and come out and be proud of myself. Thank you Amy Ray and Emily Saliers! And thank you Bill and Rebecca for playing so much Indigo Girls!

I didn't even know they were gay, I just thought this was ok at best.
sorta sounds like Travis - anyone hear it?

Mediocre music is mediocre regardless of the sexual preference of the musicians What a disappointing remark!

Not necessarily. It depends on what they look like.
I totally agree with Roverfish - the Indigo Girls were never as good after NOMADS, INDIANS, AND SAINTS. This song is fairly lame.

um yeah. that must be it. It couldn't be that this song isn't well like because it lacks any originality, or musical talent. well, whatever makes you fell good. btw - you said "gay girl bands" . are you afraid of using the L word?

Whoah. A song I actually like from the Indigo Girls. All their stuff sounds so monotonous to me. Which is not helped by the recent spate of imitators. But this song is all right. Not one of my all-time favorite songs or anything, but surprisingly good given that it's the Indigo Girls.

Who? Kevdog? Or the IGs?
I don't think the song is that bad, but that's funny.
P'raps I'm in the minority here, but I think their music took a definite slide downward after Nomads Indians Saints. I guess I miss the "old" days of the IG's.
When I am in hell, this song will be one of the songs playing. Thanks RP!

Yeah, agreed. Oh well, sometimes you gotta just choke down the Velveeta.

The folky sound of this makes it my favorite of songs by this group that I hear on RP. They sound different from one cut to another, so I still do not have a general evaluation of them. Must look into them more.
So f***ing sick of the IG.
I\'ve nothing against the I Girls, and this isn\'t a bad tune, but it\'s been a long time since I\'ve heard \"Save It For Later\" by The English Beat. How about it? ;)
Such a powerful duo. The introduction of their first album marked the turing point in my musical delights from the dark ages of classic rock, to the enlightenment of what, at the time, was alternative music.
A bit scared that I\'m enjoying the two tracks we hear from these guys on RP. Enjoying them a lot...
Who cares what they are saying, it\'s how they say it. I love the flute and is there a banjo?... nah, probably not.

Let's hope they never go away!! Love the Indigo Girls!! :D ;)
Wow, I\'m so happy Amy and Emily have gone back to their roots. This is some great folk. Cheers, Blarg.
Love it!!! The Indigo Girls first caught my attention in 1989... they were opening for R.E.M. here in Montreal, great act. After that, as is the case with commercial radio they dropped off the radar and I heard little or nothing more from the two except on our non-commercial Canadian radio network the CBC, (like the BBC, but without the accents). Radio Paradise has allowed me to rediscover them and this new tune is amazing, excellent and definitely a memorable melody! Cheers Jacques Radio Paradise - What Radio Could Have Been
