Son
What have you done?
You're caught by the river
You're coming undone

Life
You know it can't be so easy
But you can't just leave it
Cause you're not in control no more

And you give it all away
Would you give it all away now?
Don't let it come apart
Don't want to see you come apart

Son
What are you doing?
You learned a hard lesson
When you stood by the water

You and I
Were so full of love and hope
Would you give it all up now?
Would you give in just to spite them all?

Cause you give it all away
And you give it all away now
Don't let it come apart
Don't want to see you come apart

Cause you give it all away
And you give it all away now
Don't let it come apart
Don't want to see you come apart

Lay
I lay in the long grass
So many people
So many people pass

Stay
Stay here and lie on back
Get down in the cornfields
Stay till we're caught at last

Give it all away
Give it all away now
Don't let it come apart
Don't want to see you come apart

And you give it all away
Would you give it all away now?
Don't let it come apart
Don't want to see you come apart

Would you give it all away?
Would you give it all away?
Would you give it all away?

Give it all away
Give it all away
Give it all away
Give it all away

Love this comment! This is a common phrase we say in our family too. “Man! Bill’s on a roll today!”

A truly fantastic song, deep as can be, and it resonates on so many levels in so many ways for me.  Glad they're back together!
Holy crap Batman I think I see Smaug!
A joyful noise. Turn it up!
7>8, because the lyrics hit home at this point in time.

Not sure.  The River is life and how it gets taken downstream by events beyond individual control.

Have you ever dumped a canoe or kayak in Class IV rapids and then drifted downstream while your thighs are banging against rocks?

That is the metaphor that I understood.

Actually, yes... a kayak... more than once... but it was my *head* and shins banging against rocks... fortunately I was wearing a helmet and a wetsuit... but this might explain a few things about me now.

Oh, man.  I've always liked the sound of this song, but never really listened to or paid close attention to the lyrics.  I just read the words. Now I'm in tears.

Stub30, unfortunately they packed it in a few years ago - pity because I liked their layered 'wall of sound' style.

Nice tune but what's it about?
mediocre

Great song from a stunning album
Great tune, kind of a wall-of-sound deal.
almost upbeat... for a Doves song  {#Good-vibes}

Love this song.... {#Clap}

A year and a half later I read this quip of yours and I'm laughing out loud.
Time stands still on RP, I guess.
Thanks to both of you!
I played the CRAP out of this album when I got it... {#Lol}

Picking up on the 'water' theme of this set?

It's a great album which I listened to just this weekend (almost 10 years after its release). It has a nice flow to it, and many memorable songs. A worthwhile purchase in my opinion, along with their Lost Souls album.

I agree, it's a great album and I think that the standout track is There goes the Fear.

Very nice!  (never heared this before)
There are times when Bill makes my day. Today is one of them. Great tastes and DJing the soundtrack to my life.

Hardly a "weaker" U2... maybe "more restrained", although I'd also call it mesmerizing, especially the guitar solo!

Anyway, I don't shoot messengers... unless they lie to me

Thanks to R.P.  The Doves have been just one of the great bands I've been turned on to.
But, Hey Bill, have they fallen out of rotation the last year or so? Seems we got a taste
a day back when. Love R.P.

like a coldplay - with rock.

Between the Doves and Porcupine Tree, these two groups have made the listening experience all worthwhile, never mind all of the "filler" material!

I love Doves. When are they coming out with a new cd?
Just upped my rating from a 6 to a 7. Don't know when I gave it the 6 or why I was so miserly.

Wow.... I was only half paying attention during this song (damn phone keeps ringing)... and then I noticed how cool and mesmerizing it is.  I've heard of The Doves, but just realized I need to know more about them. Thanks, Bill

It must give you a warm fuzzy turning folks like me on to so much cool music, doesn't it?

Shades of the Moody Blues. Very nice ..
Ok, they are sort of mellow but can produce some of the most interesting British pop songs during these last 6 years or so. Yeah, that's right. Just checked the release date for The Last Broadcast.
RP turned me on to the Doves...thank youuuuu.
Great songs take you somewhere you want to be. This is an example. Try this one with headphones!!
This song takes me on an imaginary journey... closing my eyes, progressively raising the volume, and caught by a river through space and time - love the soaring guitar!
Great song!
Love this song. Love the Doves.
too much noisy guitar for me. I listen to RP at work and find this type of music obnoxious.
another radio station please...lame..this years air supply model..

I would love to see this group live! I see no tour schedule at the moment.

This is one song that would suit me fine if it got stuck in my player! And yes, by all means, CRANK IT till the neighbors come and ask you for a copy!
Crank it up!
I'm really hoping they go out on tour this year. They are supposedly working on a new disc. I loooooove their sound.
See them in concert if you have the chance.

Don't shoot the messenger? But it's the messenger's opinion...
After seeing hundreds of bands in concert, I have to say that the Doves are probably among my top 5 recommendations for best bands to see live.
An amazing feel good song. You just want to jam with whoever is around.
Aaaaahhhh!

kickass tune
Production is fantastic. Feels like you are outdoors and in a live audience. Nice and the musicality of this group is outstanding. 8
Gorgeous song. Great road piece for winding canyon highway. iPods.... If GardenGnome is right, looks like I should be reaching for the rest of the CD.

Oh, I disagree! I rate them highly. Though I've heard this a million times (one of my favorite trans-Atlantic albums) I still enjoy it. Most excellent tune.
that was pretty cool.
This is probably my least favorite song on this album, yet it's the one I hear the most (in TV shows, at Home Depot, etc). I think the rest of this album is more interesting, both lyrically and musically. One of the most underrated bands today!
Great set today Bill! You're on a roll!
Nice enough song but, like was said before, nothing new. Pass.
as soon as I hear a cliche like "cause you give it all away...." its hard to keep listening.

In my opinion, this is the best of the Doves' albums, owing to this song, Last Broadcast, Sulphur Man and Words. They SO need to tour stateside, already...
This is a great song, but can we hear something else from the Doves please?
This song gets a 9 from me. As far as the rest of the album goes, I wasn't all that impressed. The second track (Words), and the final track (this song) are excellent. The rest is pretty forgettable.

Hmm, I kinda like it. Can someone (who doesn't hate them) recommend their best CD?
I think this (the Last Broadcast) is their best. It's a toss-up though. Their first album (Lost Souls) is pretty damn fine too. I found their latest (Some Cities) disappointing, but only because it came after two such great albums.
oh yea, I would totally put Doves and Elbow above coldplay
Holzfaller wrote:
I love this more every time I hear it. Anybody know what the rest of the album is like?
The album has more anthems than the previous Lost Souls. This is my favourite. Consider also Elbow's second album A Cast of Thousands, similar music, great anthems and both from Manchester. Coldplay gets too much attention when there are many others out there.
Get down in the cornfields Stay till we're caught at last

Very pleasing - this is on my X-mas list :)

pretty good and very cool album cover
A truly magnificent song, lyrically and musically. Love the soaring Edge-like guitar...(and hear similarities to this in Awake Oh My Airplane -- well, I guess it must be just a tasty and irresistible run to make if you've got the gear, the chops, and the inspiration!)...
I really dig the Doves...but for some reason this one doesn't do it for me.
such a great song by such a great band
realy good

nah, they got it from Catherine Wheel. They slowed it down and subbed pianos for guitars.
