Run to your dreaming
When you're alone
Unplug the tv
Turn off your phone
Get heavy on with digging your ditch

Cause I'm diggin a ditch
Black as coal
Digging a ditch
My soul
Digging a ditch
Where madness gives
Oh digging a ditch
Where silence lives in it
And where all these worries
Weigh down on me will rise
Where all these troubles
That weigh heavy on our hearts
Will die
Will die
Will die

Run to your dreaming when your alone
Turn off the tv
And unplug your phone
Get heavy on with digging your ditch
Cause I'm
Digging a ditch
Where madness gives a bit
Digging a ditch
Where silence lives in it
Digging a ditch
When I'm through
Oh digging this ditch
I dig in for you
Where all these worries
That weigh down on me
Will die
Will die
Will die

Run to your dreaming
When your alone
Turn off the tv
Turn off your phone
Get heavy on with
Digging your ditch

It's equivalent to grade school bullying the way so many listeners feel the need to rush to the comment section whenever they hear a DMB song just to comment on their hate for this man's music. I'm giving this song a 9 for that reason.

I'm not a big DMB fan either, but I think this track is a standout, and I also have it a 9 for that reason.
Tasteful.
I think this might be their best song, But it seems quite unknown: Not a single and only 16k views at Youtube. I would never have heard it if it wasn't for RP.
This is a really lovely song.  Initially I was going to give a 7 but the low rating surprised me so I upped to to an 8 to start shifting the average.
I'm not a DMB fan. But I bumped this up one notch to an 8 today.
I always thought of Dave Matthews as a tighter, more disciplined Grateful Dead. This song is a perfect example: just as long as it needs to be.
I really like this song
Love it!
this is a fantastically beautiful song with incredibly poetic lyrics. You haters are just fucking following an Anti-DMB trend. idiots
When he's through digging that ditch, it would be ok with me if he just crawled in and pulled the dirt in after himself...
Can't stand this guy's whiny voice.
Dave has certainly written some great songs, seems to have a good sense of humor, and I´ve heard he is a regular nice guy.  Saw DMB in concert a few times many years ago, and definitely enjoyed it - good energy and lots of groove. FWIW...
Superb song✌️
I love this band and Dave. Great live and wonderful combination of groove and melody
This is a god song but my main problem with this band is that after a while songs get "noisy", becoming an instrumental  cacophony akin to a murder of crows in the afternoon, rather than a harmonious unit... and don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed Robert Fripp, Frank Zappa and even Edgar Varese so I'm not against disonance... Anyway, my two cents in case anybody cares
Outstanding
His voice irritates me.  However, he can write a song for sure.
In general I’m not a big DMB fan but this song get all the feels.
This guys loves his own voice way too much.

Are we talking dislikes or h8? These are two different things.

Ok, one of the few DMB songs (that I have heard) that does not go off on some tangent.  I like his music until he goes off exploring.  He starts a song, gets his groove going with a verse and a chorus, but then goes off on some experiment.  Which is OK...for awhile, until he goes off on another experiment.  In the meantime, I sit back waiting for him to come back to the original groove, which was quite good.  I sit unsated.  A man with no groove...

I know DMB fans say that is the point, but it's something I find annoying.  I like many jam bands with long solos and improve, but getting me out of my groove?  Not happenin'.

DMB is all groove.  I will not speak for all of their songs but, the ones that I know (and I know many), always return to the original groove. I submit that you may have been tuning out early as is your right, but that your assertion is incorrect.

LOL...I thought the same thing, and was going to double my 3 rating and decided to go with the double + 1 to match your 7.  Long Live RP and liking songs you didn't before!!
In an interview I heard with the great Gavin Harrison, he says that it's the drummer's job to make keeping time in the band interesting. Carter Beauford is from that school, for sure. He is locked in with Dave's interesting approach to song writing and playing.

Uh oh.  2002.  He may no longer be taking input on this song.

That said, I overcame technical obstacles to find this pages and rate this song highly.

Andy Dwyer likes DMB, so they're alright with me. 😋

I just might have to go see the DMB digging a ditch when they hit Vancouver on September 1st. Been a very long time since they have played here.

This is fluff...and silly to me.
I don't dislike this nearly as much as most DM songs. A pleasant 7.

Just saw him in Toronto on Saturday with my two adult daughters. Played for three hours, peddle to the metal. High energy. A man of few words between songs, though. His set was a bit disappointing, actually. Ignored many of the classics. I know he was promoting the new CD. His encore tended to kill all the excitement, I felt. Also, having seen him for the first time, I noticed how each song was about 12 min. long. Solos from his supporting cast over and over. Amazing show, no doubt. But ... maybe I was hoping for more.
I always want to dislike DMB more than I actually do. The band's got chops — I think that's what keeps winning me over.

I normally don't like DM, but this is pretty good.

Digging a ditch....I dig your digging DAVE.  Love you.

Just can't get into DMB.  Seems a little contrived...

This song, though, now that I've listened to it all the way through is pretty good....

I like the Lillywhite Sessions version, but this is goot too.

Nothing overrated about it. Simply not your cup of tea, which is fine.

I couldn't agree more with these sentiments.  Being a big DMB fan it has been difficult to attend shows in the past due to the antics of the "fans".  However, the knuckle-headed frat-boy jackasses that attended DMB shows in the early aughts have been forced to grow up, get jobs, and become reasonably decent productive citizens.  You might find the crowd more palatable and easy to get along with now... and the shows are as good as ever.

they should consider playing something live ie(dancing nancies) at redrock.
I agree. . . not bad music, I just missed the boat on them.

I love seeing them live, but there studio stuff just never does it for me

I discovered DMB when I was working in Boston in 1997 and very much enjoyed it then.  On returning to Australia I was disappointed not to hear his stuff on Aussie radio.
Yawn.
I am no DMB fan, but this I like.

{#No} feeling a bit ill suddenly
I caught a live recording on Palladia this week (at Piedmont - 2007 I think) and I have to say the drummer has the most infectious smile. Just watching him made me want to be there. Of course I am biased - I saw them at Red Rocks in 95, third row. How could you not like them?

And yes, just because a group gets played on the radio does not negate their talent!!!

Yes, it is basically the Lillywhite Sessions, with some different or enhanced arrangements. JTR, a great song that they did live for awhile, and a few others did not end up on Busted Stuff. I'd add that I liked the version of Digging a Ditch better on the Lillywhites. The sax/violin part was more prominent and lilting.

not the best of this album, but he's got such a soothing and melodic voice....
Not really digging his digging. Only the nice sax saves this from a Ho-Hum rating by the Nottingham jury, as yer man's voice is soporific. I wonder if he's a hypnotist in his day job?

Empty your mind of all thoughts.
Let your heart be at peace.
Watch the turmoil of beings,
but contemplate their return.
Each separate being in the universe

returns to the common source.
Returning to the source is serenity.

If you don't realize the source,

you stumble in confusion and sorrow.
When you realize where you come from,
you naturally become tolerant,

kindhearted as a grandmother,
dignified as a king.

Immersed in the wonder of the (INSERT BELIEF HERE) Tao,
you can deal with whatever life brings you,

Dave Matthews has created and continues to create great music, I am sorry for anyone who ruined his music by overplaying it, or hanging out with people who overplayed it. Many people in college have no idea who they are yet, and when exposed to good music they go a little overboard, e.g. Spreadheads, deadheads, parrotheads, phishheads, etc. I was fortunate to have parents who exposed me to great music growing up, So when I did get to college I was listening to "good" music and had the good sense not to ruin it by overplaying. I would think this would apply to anyone here (RP)
I still really enjoy Dave's music, even though his fans ruined the first and last DMB show I ever attended: buncha punks. I love Jimmy Buffett too, and I cannot STAND parrotheads either. Now, Ozomatli, who opened for DMB when I saw him, are not only FABULOUS live, but their fans are great too. c.
