Sometimes when I lay down at night
I swear I can see to heaven
For it's in dreaming that the things
I always knew
are the only thoughts I have
And when I look up at you, love
Handsome as a magazine
Wild as the sun, like nothing below
could ever pull you down
But it's a hard road that we follow
The saddest cities, and the darkest hollows
People cross this world
Over and then back again
Never even one time lift their eyes
Or think of what they say
But I hear it in your voice, love
Like someone sweetly willing
The hope of all these years,
the prayer of a time
that we don't even know
But it's a hard road that we follow
The saddest cities, and the darkest hollows
But I hear it in your voice, love
The strongest sound
I've ever heard
Like water from a well
so deep in the ground
I'll never thirst again
But it's a hard road that we follow
The saddest cities, and the darkest hollows
And everything that's far away
And was lost from me
I see it all from here in you
I swear I can see to heaven
For it's in dreaming that the things
I always knew
are the only thoughts I have
And when I look up at you, love
Handsome as a magazine
Wild as the sun, like nothing below
could ever pull you down
But it's a hard road that we follow

Their chord changes are a wonder.
This group raised the Appalachian sound to art song.
Melodic and thoughtful :)
Sweet.
I love how the wonderful female vocalist in this fine song kind of parallels Stephen Stills' artistry in Four and Twenty, played just a bit ago...
Their song Half Acre makes me cry (I'm a wuss though).
Boring HOLLOW Americana.
Tokyo via Appalachia...

Superb song........magic set Bill, such thanks and respect!
This is ok, not near as cheesy as the other songs I have heard from them.

Just turn off the TV and listen to the music, maybe add a bit of reading...
I have Rabbit Songs and Eveningland and love both CDs, need to add more Hem. Absolutely worth getting.

They ARE very similar. I would say "Rabbit Songs" is *slightly* better, but there are songs on "Eveningland" that are among my favorite Hem songs.
I think "Pacific Street" is brilliant! "Lucky" is great too, as is "Hollow."
I still think "Half Acre" is probably their best song. But "Not California" from "Funnel Cloud" is also up there.
The thing about Hem is they are not breaking any new ground with each release.... but so far that's OK with me, as they are well written songs that come from the heart, with lyrical depth and have musical interest for me. In short, there is very little Hem I don't like.
I wish they didn't sell so many of their songs for commercials, but that doesn't change the fact that their music moves me greatly.
So like this but reading your review makes me wonder if I won't hear a bunch of commercials since I really don't their music other then this. Still worth getting?
Again, I say ...
Thank you, HEM

I think they need to to take Hem off the rotation. Everything that follows them seems dead by comparison.

I don't think she needs to be told.

It's not about singing. It's the package. The story, the melody, the inflection in the voice, the way it makes you feel. I feel sorry you don't get it.
Ya dude, this chick can sing. I don't know if I'd go all girl scout teary eyed but ya, she's got it.

Me? All I can say is this woman can easily bring tears to my eyes with her beautiful voice... viva la difference.

Sorry amigo, but if you can't shift gears from Zep to this, you've got some learnin' to do here at the one and only RP.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! for playing this it's been too long since the last song from Hemm
I see that Madison Ave. has discovered Hem. New ad campaign featuring their music has hit network TV...
Her voice breaks my heart. This song is so beautiful. It makes me want to dry up and float away. Aren't they from LA? How can something this wonderful and pure come from such a tainted place?
:(

Boo.
Ooooh, very good...
But also too short.
The funny thing about Hem is that they discovered Sally (vocals) briefly after they had given up their search for a vocalist.
One of the better Hem tunes not on the Rabbit Songs album.
The only group with singers that could give this voice a run for her money is the Wailin' Jennys.

Every time I hear it this song just stops me in my tracks. The singer's voice is incredible and the hook in this song is wonderful.
Led Zeppelin - pshawww! Overated.
Most excellent.
How can they follow Zeppelin with this uberwoosy pooh? I just don't get it, RP, I really don't.
A vocalist with the ability to give Sandy Denny (may she RIP) a "run for her money"?
Saw Hem twice this summer in Boston. They sound just like this live. They toured with Over the Rhine - another soulful female vocalist.
Beautiful voice!
hey is that the chandelier that fell on Hasselhoff?
What a silky voice! Love it.

Yeah, the cover art grabbed me as well. Striking.

The vocalist sounds like the one from an obscure band, October Project - very nice.
Perhaps a little. Sally Ellyson has a much softer voice and a higher range than Mary Fahl of October Project (who was quoted as saying she likes female vocalists to sound like women instead of girls). Interesting triviata...Sally got the job by offering Dan Messé a "demo" tape of lullabies she'd made for a friend. Since then, Hem's been making some great albums.
Another likeable tune from the New York band.
Quite nice.

HEM shouldn't be as compelling as I find them ... the ethereal voice, the moody edge, the darkness I hear in the sweet ... Gotta say, I likey
Hem's fantabulous. Not my favorite song on the album, but better'n a whack on the head with a stick.
This sounds like it came out in the '70's, and that's not a bad thing. Full rich melodic ballad.
I think that this is a pretty... no ... beautiful song.
Touching & just purely beautiful.
Don't love the song, no.

Some pathetic souls are desperately in need of attention and regretably possess maturity levels so low that they actually relish comments like yours and mine. Pretty song, huh?

Lovely voice, but the song doesn't do much for me.. maybe some of her other stuff is good?
voice reminds me a bit of Dido and Sarah... but not such an over-produced sound. Pleasant.
good voice, not my style though..
Nuances on this album too. Lovely piece.
simply awesome, profound and beautiful.

It's ok, not for me. Pretty Voice
When I heard the name, I thought it was "M" alias Mathieu Chedid famous in France...
What an outstanding start of my day: Philip Glas, Supertramp, and now this, all in the past 20 minutes.
Brilliant.
Nice, not so deep and depressing as Cowboy Junkies can be, just lazy sounding sound...nice after a days hard labor
Definitely. I'd say there are about 3-4 songs that are exceptional. The rest of the album is strong as well. If you liked 'Rabbit Songs' I'd say its worth a purchase.

No skips on the stream, but perhaps this explains your apparent lack of taste on so many clearly excellent songs. No more comments until you get yourself more bandwidth (and taste).
Great to hear these guys again after Rabbit Songs, which I definitely enjoyed. It would seem that their sound is changing somewhat...but still a really nice tune.

nice to hear HEM here.
Saw HEM at Schubas here in Chicago last night!! AWESOME show---so dynamic and fulfilling!! AMAZING talent, dont miss them if you get the chance---
really enjoyed "half acre" more than this track. still, not bad.
Nice
