She's not the kind of girl
Who likes to tell the world
About the way she feels about herself
She takes a little time
In making up her mind
She doesn't want to fight against the tide
[Chorus]
Lately I'm not the only one
I say never trust anyone
Always the one who has to drag her down
Maybe you'll get what you want this time around
Can't bear to face the truth
So sick he cannot move
And when it hurts he takes it out on you
[Chorus]
The trick is to keep breathing
The trick is to keep breathing
She knows the human heart
And how to read the stars
Now everything's about to fall apart
I won't be the one who's going to let you down
Maybe you'll get what you want this time around
(the trick is to keep breathing)
I won't be the one who's going to let you down
(the trick is to keep breathing)
Maybe you'll get what you want this time around
The trick is to keep breathing [Repeat: x7]

Please add more Garbage to the playlists. They are criminally underrated.

This is really good, but why the name? "Garbage?" Really? Anyone know?

This album is a classic for this genre-defining band. I see this band every time they come to Portland, OR and the sound quality of their live shows is like nothing I've ever heard before and they absolutely bring the house down. Their sound gets copied a lot through the years.
I've seen them twice in concert, once for an acoustic set. The large show was excellent, but the acoustic performance was amazing - the whole band is exceptionally talented. Been a fan for decades, at this point.
Thanks BillG!! More Garbage pls! Have seen them 4 times and they put on a great show
Garbage opened for Tears for Fears USA tour.
They were so good to see. I knew their music, but I now know the Band.
So Good with such a following.

The only garbage on the planet that is great. Love that Bass Hook.

Well, you have to call your band something. I actually like the name Garbage because the band so self-evidently isn't. Sort of 'meta', absent the unwelcome associations of Zuckerberg's fatuity.

Ooooooooh, Shirley.

Aptly named band with this particular number.
I remember being mesmerized by the harmony and sublime guitar licks in this piece. Still having the same goosebumps in 2020.

Really wish they could have finished that show instead of pulling the plug.

Listen to the changing dynamics of this tune. Simply breathtaking.
This whole album is well above average, have enjoyed it for years. Butch Vig is their drummer, producer and part sound engineer. Same goes for his work with the Smashing Pumpkins, Nervina and some Foo Fighter tracks, he's a true tallent. Seen Shirley is some movies/TV showes as well, need to get her back in the studio.
Almost everything on this CD/album is good to excellent. Probably, and strictly my opinion, one of the better albums of the late 1990's....at least...for the genre.

Voice or legs more attractive? Something to contemplate.
Such a pretty voice for one of the meanest Terminators.
Great song from a great album. Shirley is still wonderful, too.

Shirley Manson does a song called "Samson and Delilah" that is epic. Her voice has just the right growl to make it powerful. This is an interesting song, too - a lot less potent than some of the other Garbage music, but I like it.

A trivial web search returns multiple hits with the same answer to your question, so I suggest that you could try to guess a suitable selection of words to type into your preferred search engine. To get you started, can I suggest you could try 'Garbage', 'Band' and 'Name'.
Isn't it much easier (and probably shorter) to just answer the question?

I like Shirleys' voice because I find it quite sexy, and the song is pleasant as well.
Like others here, I really like Shirley Manson's voice mainly because it sounds like an indy artist in Chicago, Alain Quinn who has an album out called: And God Made Woman. If you like Shirley and also Manda from Morcheeba, you will love Alain.

Sorry I missed this one. One of my top Garbage tracks for sure. A 10 all the way.
10; Godlike throughout the album. Sublime production.
Hard to screw up an album with Shirley Manson's voice, though.

What's wrong with angst-ridden stuff?
I'd forgotten about Garbage! Such a great sound... Makes me wish I had those speakers that they're advertising on the main page, instead of some crappy Dell's!
This would definitely have to be one of my 'desert island albums'.

Garbage did my favorite MODERN Bond theme - "The World is Not Enough". SO good.

Catchy track from a solid album. Disappointed that the group has fallen off the radar with ho-hum albums released since Version 2.0.
Shirley rocks!

I liked this album a lot when it came out, but now it sounds very dated to me for some reason. Seems a lot older than it really is. Good track though.
I agree, I used to love too this album in 1998; in late '90's electronic sounds were a mania, very cool (look at prodigy, massive attack, moby, madonna w/william orbit...etc), so every artist (even U2!!)filled his music of electronic tricks 'till not being able to recognize a "real instrument" from a sample.....at the time that was cool, but more stuff today sounds very dated and out of fashion....if you consider that now electronic it's ok but... electro vintage sounds from 80's added to sharp guitar riffs + deep valve basses and strong drums....
This is nice. I had always assumed that Garbage was just angst ridden stuff, but I like this.

The pulsing violins at one point sound just like a Kate Bush track!
Did you too hear a "download completed" beep a minute ago or is it just me? I wasn't downloading and I heard that beep while listening this song. Weird.
Songs like this make me wish I could have been Shirley Manson in an alternate reality.
I LOVE Shriley Manson!!!!!!
It does not get much better than this
Dig it
love this! haven't heard it in a long time!
Most excellent!

Garbage Lyrics
"The Trick Is To Keep Breathing"
She's not the kind of girl
Who likes to tell the world
About the way she feels about herself
She takes a little time in making up her mind
She doesn't want to fight against the tide
And lately I'm not the only one
I say never trust anyone
Always the one who has to drag her down
Maybe you'll get what you want this time around
Can't bear to face the truth
So sick he cannot move
And when it hurts he takes it out on you
And lately I'm not the only one

I just bought tickets for their show here at the end of August. Kick ass!

Me too; I haven't listened to this in a long time (the album's an old favorite), but when it first came on, Poe popped into mind.

One of my favorite songs off this album, but it always makes me think of early Berlin. Not that that's a bad thing.

My favourite Garbage song. Nice addition, for sure. And just to nitpick, it's 'Breathing', not 'Breathin' in the title.
find this going through my head now and again
