Sunday is Gloomy,
My hours are slumberless,
Dearest, the shadows I live with are numberless
Little white flowers will never awaken you
Not where the black coach of sorrow has taken you
Angels have no thought of ever returning you
Would they be angry if I thought of joining you
Gloomy Sunday

Gloomy is Sunday
In shadows I spend it all
My heart and I have decided to end it all
Soon there'll be candels and prayers that are sad,
I know, let them not weep,
Let them know that I'm glad to go

Death is no dream,
For in death I'm caressing you
With the last breath of my soul I'll be blessing you
Gloomy Sunday

Dreaming
I was only dreaming
I wake and I find you
Asleep in the deep of
My heart
Dear

Darling I hope that my dream never haunted you
My heart was telling you how much I wanted you
Gloomy Sunday

Heather, I see you have a new album out. I'm very disappointed to see "Gloomy Sunday" was not included on the playlist. Perhaps you think you can move on to new pastures and fresh ideas after laying this turd on the ground behind you, but I still smell the turd. Young lady, I expect to hear a new cover of Bjork's cover of Sarah's cover of your old cover of a Billie Holiday classic which no one, rightfully, listens to or even believes exists. Finish what you started. Sincerely, your biggest fan.

Gloomy Sunday

Not this Sunday!

A 20 mile urban (mountain bike ride in the city) all through Boston - North End, Beacon Hill, wharfs, financial district, Boston Common, Esplanade, etc. Sweet.

Dude,  Its 11:15AM in Cville, VA on a Sunday and 85 degrees F, sunny, with a breeze outside right now.  {#Eh}

Can't say this fits the atmosphere... she is hot though!

Totally not me cup of tea....but you won't read any nasty silly remarks from me. To each his own.
She will be mine. Oh, yes - she will be mine. I love you, dreamwoman.
Quite nice...got my attention
Anyone have live Heather shows to trade? I have about 30 at (click here), would like to hear some recent stuff after her baby break...

Yeah. Sarah makes it sound like it's 'supposed to', if that's possible. Either way, Heather's is funky, and it doesn't work with the song. That said, on it's own merits, it sounds cool.
Used to have this track on a cd of chill-out tunes. Defintely one of the chillinest.
Pat DiNizio (Smithereens) does the benchmark take on this tune.

Goddess! Purrfection!
I knew this wasn't the Sinead O'Connor version, which she did on the cover album Am I Not Your Girl. When I went to look up the original recording, I found a listing of 11 recordings of it, but not the one of Sinead. Wonder why... This version is interesting. Next I'll need to listen to the Billie Holiday recording.

Wow, this is lush. Embarrased to say that I've never heard the original version but the song and the voice are beautiful.

Sinead O'Connor's version of this old, old song is much better, IMHO. My mother loved this song and hummed it constantly.
Somewhere, Billie Holiday is weeping.
I feel so good... think I'll shoot myself...
let's hear the billie holiday version!

I yam what I yam. (bows) Seriously, I really had fun that black day I assaulted this song. Some might refer to that say as a gloomy day, or perhaps, a gloomy Sunday. In any case, I have no regrets. I hate this song, and like Cindy Sheehan, I will do everything within my limited power to see it banished. On an important sidenote, I've listened to "South," and it's somewhere between servicable and listenable, with occassional doses of not bad thrown in. But even if she'd made Sgt. Pepper II, this song would suck. All in all, my main goal was accomplished in spades: To entertain myself.

I've been listening to a lot of different versions of this song off Rhapsody. Many of the ones that have been listed here. I have to say, this version is one of my favorites. Moreso after hearing the others. I won't even consider comparing it to Billie Holiday, but I think this version does well on Heather.

Heather pales in comparison to Billie Holliday or Sarah McLachlan, as far as this song is concerned. She's not very good at doing covers, IMO. mediocre cover, feeble. The last verse is not original to the song,(to answer the hungarian a few posts back) Billie had to add them in order to lift the ban on this song. At the time of it's original realese people were leaping out of windows at an alarming rate.

THIS song AND Björk ?? I don't know how to imagine anything worse...
I love the strings in this song. I'm not sure if I've heard Sarah's version or any other version for that matter. Being that this is probably my first listen of this song I'd have to rate it pretty high. Enjoying the music and the flow of her voice, hauntingly beautiful... I'll have to keep my eye out for other versions though to compare it.
In my opinion, there is absolutely no way that Billie Holiday's version can be touched. But, I find that I can actually listen to this version without wincing. Interesting.

its got a very downtempo portishead sneaker pimps feel which with the strings i think works very well. very sexy voice in this song.

Please, PLEASE, don't ever play any other Heather Nova, and don't you DARE play anyone else's version of Gloomy Sunday. THIS IS THE STUFF, man. The good stuff. Yeah! Hell yeah!

Billie Holiday's version (remixed) creeps me out entirely. One of the most powerful songs in the universe. Unfortunately, this version is as lame as natto on hot asphalt.
I want you to come... The lady needs lithium. Excellent tune, though.

Check it out, they are more depressing in Hungarian: r e z s ÃŽ   s e r e s s'   l y r i c s Ôsz van és peregnek a sárgult levelek Meghalt a földön az emberi szeretet Bánatos könnyekkel zokog az öszi szél Szívem már új tavaszt nem vár és nem remél Hiába sírok és hiába szenvedek Szívtelen rosszak és kapzsik az emberek... Vége a világnak! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ LITERAL ENGLISH TRANSLATION: It is autumn and the leaves are falling All love has died on earth The wind is weeping with sorrowful tears My heart will never hope for a new spring again My tears and my sorrows are all in vain People are heartless, greedy and wicked... Love has died! The world has come to its end, hope has ceased to have a meaning Cities are being wiped out, shrapnel is making music Meadows are coloured red with human blood There are dead people on the streets everywhere I will say another quiet prayer: People are sinners, Lord, they make mistakes... it seems that a lot of that *might* be true -- apparently Hungary has (and has had for many many years) the world's highest per-capita suicide rate as a nation, and it's not uncommon for suicides to happen in rashes. it's true also that the composer was a suicide thirty years after the song was written. strange that it should have spawned so many deaths -- the ending of the song is pretty hopeful, isn't it? unless, of course, that's just the English lyrics; the original Hungarian might be a lot more desperate.

Songs like these are my reason to play RP! Wonderful. Sheer beauty. A 9.
I'm really hating this. It's breath-taking how viciously I'm feeling toward this song right now. It doesn't suck, but I hate it. Can't figure why.
I like this - but I love Sarah McLachlan's version. I think another poster said it best - there's too much going on here. If the original had been anything like this, it never would have gotten it's dark reputation as the suicide's song of choice.
