Flaxen hair blowing in the breeze
It is time for the geese to head south
I have come with my mustard seed
I cannot accept that she will be taken from me
"Do you know who I am," she said
"I'm the one who taps you on the shoulder when it's your time
Don't be afraid I promise that she will awake
Tomorrow somewhere
Tomorrow somewhere"
Wrap yourself around the Tree of Life
And the Dance of the Infinity of the Hive
Take this message to Michael
I will comb myself into chains
In between the tap dance clan
And your ballerina gang
I have come for the Beekeeper
I know you want my, you want my Queen
Anything but this
Can you use me instead?
"Do you know who I am," she said
"I'm the one who taps you on the shoulder when it's your time
Don't be afraid I promise that she will awake
Tomorrow somewhere
Tomorrow somewhere"
In your gown with your breathing mask on
Plugged into a heart machine
As if you ever needed one
I must see the Beekeeper
I must see if she'll keep her alive
Call Engine Forty Nine
I have come with my mustard seed
"Do you know who I am," she said
"I'm the one who taps you on the shoulder when it's your time
Don't be afraid I promise that she will awake
Tomorrow somewhere
Tomorrow somewhere"
Maybe I'm passing you by
Just passing you by, girl
I'm just passing you by
On my way
On my way
I'm just passing you by
But don't be confused
One day I'll be coming for you
I must see the Beekeeper
I must see the Beekeeper

I really like the low-key quality to this song. Opposite of in your face, and that's nice because I need my personal space.
Not my favorite song of hers. But Tori is an amazing artist. Glad to see her played.
it's about her mom
"in your gown, with your breathing mask on"
Her mother is still alive today though. She survived.
What does it mean, "I have come with my mustard seed"??

I'll never have enough of Tori...keep her comin'.
It's really not fair to play this at three in the afternoon (EST). I'm having enough trouble staying awake, and then Tori starts into this lullaby and I'm yawning. Love the song, but in about 8 hours. kthx.
unmistakable..

I first got into her music with Under the Pink... when I listen to it now it takes me right back to that time in my life. Then my co-worker (who I would have never pegged for a Tori Amos fan) turned me on to Scarlet's Walk, which I would recommend even more strongly.
The thing with her music is that you have to turn up the volume to immerse yourself in the orchestration... whether it's the symphonic feel of "Yes, Anasthasia" or the rich microphone-right-down-in-the-piano sound of "Cornflake Girl."
As for this particular track, I can take it or leave it... but I'm going to remember to put in Scarlet's Walk at work tomorrow.

This is not my favorite Tori song (although she is my favorite performer). But she is extraordinarily profound. I read that a "Beekeeper" refers to someone who tends to the gardens of our lives and keeps them pollinated and flourishing.

Interminably boring. Sheeeesh does this thing EVER end ...
Psh, who doesn't like Tori Amos. I didn't even need to think or breathe before I knew who this was. Great song!
I thought this was about her Mom being ill & afraid she would die....
finding her faith ( mustard seed)..seeking answers in the afterlife...& someday it will be Tori's time to die too,.....

Is it just me, or does this sound, in spots, "Japanese"? (I supppose the references to Madonna's Ray of Light are apropos here...)

Sound a bit like Kate Bush? I agree, and that's not a bad thing.

A comeback? Are you insane? A summary execution is necessary, but if she sings any more songs my internal organs may spontaneously combust in sheer horror. Ack!

Famous Amos Stamos.
Oh yeah, don't really care for Amos or Stamos, but I like cookies.
I wish Tori would make a solo piano record - no voice, no other instrumentation. Just piano. Now THAT i bet would be ass-kicking.
She's talented undeniably, just don't care for her music. It just has this cold quality to me.
I like it more than I thought I would.
It's an "MTV Buzz Track" . . . with a guest appearance by Sting!
Just kidding! Seriously, I like this one, and I usually don't like Tori.
So, what would happen if Tori Amos married John Stamos? She would be Tori Amos Stamos. Weird, wouldn't it?
Well stated. One thing I appreciate immensely is singers that also write their own music and lyrics. Add to that an ability to play an instrument, and their stock rises in my book. What you describe about her piano playing abilities will have me listening for that when I hear her music again. I was completely unaware of that.
Regarding the difficulties of her past, those are weighty matters and I can appreciate them being included in her lyrics.
Thanks for the thoughtful reply.

I appreciate your civility, a courtesy that's all too rare on these boards.
I don't think one can "relegate" Tori to "angry white girrrl" music because she sort of preceded/helped found expressionistic female music.
Her piano skills are incontrivertible; she was admitted to the Peabody Conservatory at, I believe, age 5.
It's not so much her "daddy" that's influenced her work as her rapist, her multiple miscarriages, and later, her heritage. If you listen to her albums chronologically, you'll see that early in her career she addresses personal issues and later moves on to global issues including politics and religion (although the later is evident all through her career). She has indeed "gotten over" her personal tragedies, something that many of her fans (selfishly) rue.
Honestly, you personally may not be missing anything, at least lyrics-wise. The songs either resonate with you or they don't. However, the piano-playing is a force to be reckoned with. If you'd like, I can email you a couple incredible live versions of songs with great solos.
Hope this helps.

To me, her work is easily relegated to the "angry white girrrrl" rack and forgotten about. Her music makes me want to tell her that at this point in her life, either daddy is sorry for what he did or didn't do by now, or he's not. Get over it. I don't need to hear about it.

It's poignant that a Sarah McLachlan song came on after this. Sarah nearly always sounds soulful, sorrowful and passionate and that works. Tori just sounds like she needs a big glass of wine and a valium. To my ear, Sarah needs to keep doin what she's doin. Tori needs psychotherapy.
So, what is it that people see in Tori's work? Here is your chance to tell me what I'm missing.

Listening to much of Tori Amos -- especially this track -- feels like someone is trying to trick me into thinking it's Kate Bush-- but with far less depth.
This cut in particular annoys the hell out of me for some reason.
this is so eerily powerful live....

Lock me in a small room with a single bare lightbulb and Tori Amos music piped in, and I'll confess to anything. In about 2 minutes, maybe less.
