For about 3/10ths of a second, I was hooked, as the wonderful transition was made from Fiona Apple's "Red, Red, Red" to this guy's overly mic'd voice talking about "there was this woman" and i thought he was talking about Fiona, and then the mic starting picking up all the little gurgling sounds as he was clearly slurping a soda as he talked and it got to be really, really annoying because he clearly thought he was the second coming of Arlo Guthrie only Arlo Guthrie wasn't dead yet and he really wasn't fit to carry Arlo Guthrie's garbage, and he insisted on slurping and talking and slurping and talking and all I could hear was the saliva and spittle and that sound will stay with me until I go to my grave. And then I think he sang a song, but who was listening by that point?

The more I hear Bright Eyes, the less I like. What a hack. Sure he's a singer songwriter and he's young. But there are far more talented singer songwriters who are actually good.

I loved that opening, then hated what followed. This is my first time to hear the band (guy?), and it wasn't the best first impression. I doubt I'll hear this one again soon.

Well I'm going against most of the other posts and saying this song is awesome! This is the first track of "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" and Conor usually puts long, non-musical intros to his albums, and this one is the best of the bunch, with a cute little story about dying and starting a new life "Happy Birthday!" He could have picked better songs off either album.

seriously, what in the ham sandwich was that dude talking about? okay song though. pretty groovy, in a summer camp sort of way.

I'm probably just showing my age, but if he's the latest "New Dylan," I'll take the old one, please. (And, yes, I've seen Bright Eyes in concert...and I'm still underwhelmed.)

This song would be MUCH better without the spoken intro.

I could have done without the stupid dialog at the beginning of the song.
