Remember the old days of Family Feud, when they'd flash that badly superimposed red box-x thing and then hit that nice loud buzzer when someone was wrong? Well... --- |X| --- Oh yeah...BUZZZZZ.
I'm old enough to remember the Gong Show, which I think would be drowning him out here.
Couldn't agree more. What swill. Is this supposed to be deep and philosophical? It is pretentious and silly. BigPete wrote:
Playing this crap again are we? Well this time I'm switching stations.

A hint of the Pogues? A pinch of Arlo Guthrie?
A 4.2 rating? Sheesh....wuzzat tell you?
Great track... love the Jim James back-up.
For about 3/10ths of a second, I was hooked, as the wonderful transition was made from Fiona Apple's "Red, Red, Red" to this guy's overly mic'd voice talking about "there was this woman" and i thought he was talking about Fiona, and then the mic starting picking up all the little gurgling sounds as he was clearly slurping a soda as he talked and it got to be really, really annoying because he clearly thought he was the second coming of Arlo Guthrie only Arlo Guthrie wasn't dead yet and he really wasn't fit to carry Arlo Guthrie's garbage, and he insisted on slurping and talking and slurping and talking and all I could hear was the saliva and spittle and that sound will stay with me until I go to my grave. And then I think he sang a song, but who was listening by that point?

this song makes my head hurt.....
Mommy, make the bad man stop singing badly.
I think Tom Robbins said it best: "There are two kinds of people in the world--those who think there are two kinds of people, and those who know better."
The more I hear Bright Eyes, the less I like. What a hack. Sure he's a singer songwriter and he's young. But there are far more talented singer songwriters who are actually good.
Couldn't agree more. A folk-song style beaten to death, being beaten more. Does he think this is original song-writing, naive politics?

This song is aptly named.

exactly......
Please, please, please Bill make it go away... far, far away.
weak...........retread
not again...
please just shoot me.
I loved that opening, then hated what followed. This is my first time to hear the band (guy?), and it wasn't the best first impression. I doubt I'll hear this one again soon.

Not sure where I fit- this guy made me not want to get it.
i am one who gets it, and still doesn't like him. He gets played way too much for his lack of talent. please make the hurting stop now

aaaack, make it stop. Like I really want to hear this guy drinking his coffee.
This song is very, very, very, very, very annoying.

Hey! I was going to say that!
Well I'm going against most of the other posts and saying this song is awesome! This is the first track of "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning" and Conor usually puts long, non-musical intros to his albums, and this one is the best of the bunch, with a cute little story about dying and starting a new life "Happy Birthday!" Here is the intro if you want to read a bit of poetry from the great Conor Oberst: "So there was this women and she was on an airplane and she's flying to meet her fiancé sailing high above the largest ocean on planet earth and she was seated next to this man who you know she had tried to start a conversation, but really the only thing she heard him say was to order his bloody mary and she's sitting there and she's reading this really arduous magazine article about this third world country that she couldn't even pronounce the name of and she's feeling very bored and very despondent and then uh suddenly there's this huge mechanical failure and one of the engines gave out and they started just falling thirty thousand feet and the pilots on the microphone and he's saying, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, Oh My God, I'm Sorry" and apologizing and she looks at the man and she says, "where are we going" and he looks at her and he says, "We're going to a party, it's a birthday party. It's your birthday party, happy birthday darling. We love you very, very, very, very, very, very, very much." and then he starts humming this little tune and it kind of goes like this ..."
He could have picked better songs off either album.

Why didn't he just say so, then? Would have save us all those 4 minutes we just wasted listening to this.
Well said, Allan!

He is simply saying that there is no such thing as you and me, that we are all one experiencing ourselves subjectively, that there is no hell, there is no death, only one eternal moment that we are all experiecing together, so why cant we all just get along,..that's all

And the running narration throughout the song. God that was awful.
Kind of reminds me of Poi Dog Pondering? But...not as good...

I'm probably just showing my age, but if he's the latest "New Dylan," I'll take the old one, please. (And, yes, I've seen Bright Eyes in concert...and I'm still underwhelmed.)
This song would be MUCH better without the spoken intro.
I could have done without the stupid dialog at the beginning of the song.
