Down on Blessing Avenue
Lovers they walk by
Holdin' hands two by two
A breeze crosses the porch
Bicycle spokes spin 'round
Jacket's on, I'm out the door
Tonight I'm gonna burn this town down
And the girls in their summer clothes
In the cool of the evening light
The girls in their summer clothes
Pass me by
Kid's rubber ball smacks
Off the gutter 'neath the lamp light
Big bank clock chimes
Off go the sleepy front porch lights
Downtown the store's alive
As the evening's underway
Things been a little tight
But I know they're gonna turn my way
And the girls in their summer clothes
In the cool of the evening light
The girls in their summer clothes
Pass me by
Frankie's Diner's
Over on the edge of town
Neon sign spinnin' round
Like a cross over the lost and found
Fluorescent lights
Flicker above Bob's Grill
Shaniqua brings a coffee and asks "fill?"
And says "penny for your thoughts now my boy Bill"
She went away
She cut me like a knife
Hello beautiful thing
Maybe you could save my life
In just a glance
Down here on Magic Street
Love's a fool's dance
I ain't got much sense but I still got my feet
And the girls in their summer clothes
In the cool of the evening light
The girls in their summer clothes
Pass me by
And the girls in their summer clothes
In the cool of the evening light
The girls in their summer clothes
Pass me by
La la la la, la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la
La la la la, la la la la la la la

Although I, too could live without the Spector Wall of Sound,
Summer is slowing fading away.
Bummer.
Oh YES!!
Hot & Humid here, but come September, it's long sleeves....
Kind of like Bob on Nashville Skyline in terms of being a completely different vocal style.
Summer is slowing fading away.
Bummer.
Yeah! Sounds like some obscure alt-rock band between the 80s and 90s. Like the Trashcan Sinatras....
agree
Yeah, I know, it's kind of pop-y, sort of overproduced, rose-colored, rear view mirror nostalgic, but man, does this push my buttons - brings back vivid memories of all the young cuties of yesteryear at the beach. . .ahhhhh. . . . .
... sounds a lot like someone who used to sing for Bauhaus. And, it sounds like the only Bruce Springsteen song I like.
His voice is downright pretty here. I've always been a fan.
Don't usually see videos, but they play this one at my gym constantly. Hearing the song gives me a pavlovian urge to run faster.

There is definitely something unseemly about this kind of clueless ageist commentary. Grow up.
It's a goddam song; the PC is really out of control!
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
I've never seen so many middle aged men in tight blue jeans shouting like 12 year old girls at a Girls Aloud concert.
actually, the girls where shouting like men at a Bruce concert.

Nah - he is older now of course!
yes!, great and emblematic!

This song sucks. Please try to do better next time.
Thanks for your attention to this matter.

I think if you read the lyrics, you'll find that they are less than prurient. The larger metaphor seems to be about being left behind - by a woman, by his youth, and also socially, economically, etc. With Bruce, culture critique is never far behind. :)
Bruce can write a pop hit, as much as he can move us to passion and tears.
When I play this for friends, they can never tell who it is. Were it not for the hetero theme, it could almost pass for a Magnetic Fields tune.
Sinatra? Where's the huh smiley...
The poster boy for a performer that decided to go for popularity over quality. The old 70's and 80's songs had originality and passion. This stuff is elevator music imho.

Right on! I won't say this is the only Bruce song I've ever liked, but it's my favorite so far. Add me to your 'majority', nonetheless.
Speaking of majorities, if you're not in Canada, tune in. Canadian politics are finally getting somewhat interesting, as much as is possible for Canadian politics.

1:18 PM: XTC - Summer's Cauldron
1:21 PM: Bruce Springsteen - Girls in Their Summer Clothes
I think Bill wishes it wasn't November 30 today. Up next, I'm guessing... Don Henley - Boys of Summer?
Nov 07, 2008 - 08:45 Bruce Springsteen - It's Hard To Be a Saint in the City;
Nov 07, 2008 - 14:05 more Bruce Springsteen - Growin' Up;
Nov 07, 2008 - 20:08 Bruce Springsteen - Girls in Their Summer Clothes
valley later of what never!......in any way it is late.
I looked through the postings and can't find a majority of people saying that this is the only Bruce song they've ever liked. I'm sure Bruce has been waiting his entire career for you to tell him to pay attention and is much gratified with your approval. I'm astonished he didn't write a post himself to thank you.
No need to be unkind. I think most of us understood the implied meaning.
Before I knew this was Springsteen, I though, "Wow, this is really good. Sounds like Springsteen, but better."
Not a big Bruce fan, but he has his moments and this one shines like a supernova.

Amen to that.
A few of his old tunes are bearable in a nostalgic sort of way, if I don't hear them too often. But that's about the best I can say for 'ol Bruce. Til this song came along.
At the risk of angering some, sounding like a hypocrite, and generally being a deconstructionist, this has a very "Kids Are Alright" sound to it. . .
crap. . . already wrote this once. . .
It must be a east coast thing, still like him after all these years. What can I say I from the Jersey shore. you either Like or dislike him. Looking forward to seeing him agian real soon. last time was 76 at Stone Pony
I was never a fan of Bruce's "Born to Run" or "Born in the USA" stuff, but this is quite good. He is the rare artist that I actually like his recent stuff better.

My jaw bounced off my keyboard when I checked to see who was singing.
Sounds nothing like Bruce. Or the E Street Band, for that matter.
Dunno - seems like a return to his Orbison-inspired roots, to me.
One of my favorite Springsteen songs, already. Very moving and truly magical.
I agree with everything said here. Everything. I listened to Magic after hearing this cut and thought the CD would have to be near perfect if this cut was any indication. I was disappointed. But this song, this one, is magic.
I can hear The Magnetic Fields in there somewhere...
YES!!!! I'm so shocked it's Bruce! I completely thought it was Stephen Merritt!!!! It sounds SO Mag Fields... I love this! (yes, everyone... I'm WAY behind on this album...)
On top of Mount Baker this afternoon it was sunburning hot.........the end of the end of summer.
Although I, too could live without the Spector Wall of Sound,
I haven’t been on top of Baker but I’ve been almost on top of Shuksan, and have been on top of Winchester and Larrabee!!
