Yes, the music isn't bad, but McGuinn's singing sounds so strained and contrived that it's almost humorous.  It reminds me of the music teacher from Beavis & Butthead, singing the "Lesbian Seagull" song.

Following the Eliza Gilkyson cover of "Is It Like Today" this one is bone-chillingly bad. I really like the musical accents from Calexico, but this is one of those classic songs where the original is so perfectly toned and so perfectly arranged, that a cover like this has no chance. THis one may need a pass through the "bit scrambler" to help it disappear from the rotation.

Ha! I agree with the Christopher Guest reference. This is straight from "A Mighty Wind". The song is awful and sounds contrived and forced.

Good song. But this version reminds me of something from the soundtrack of "the Good the Bad and the Ugly."  I like the Robert Plant version much more. From the Dreamland CD. Worth checking out!

I did a 7 disk compilation of coffee songs called Java Junkies. (There's a surprising number of GOOD songs about or mentioning coffee. There were nearly 5 disks worth of BAD songs that I culled out.) I had enough good versions of this song to put one on each disk. (This one didn't make it ) You're right....the White Stripes version was probably the best American version, but Sertab's weird middle-eastern version was the very best.

I agree...but this has that Mexican flare to it so give it that much. His voice is just so weak compared to Dylan, and this version lacks essence.

Well, Roger has a long, successful track record of covering Dylan, and Calexico's sound fits the song quite nicely, but the original is just so damn good that this pales in comparison. Still, I give it a 6. (Wish Roger could get a record contract so we'd hear more from him. Although giving away his folk recordings (click here) is pretty cool .)

Just saw this movie on a plane over the weekend. I really liked it and for whatever reason gave me a whole new appreciation for Dylan. I guess that was probably their goal but it sure worked for me. I've been pursuing Dylan stuff ever since, and I'd never been a huge fan before, just admired a handful of his songs (like this one). I'd definitely recommend checking out the movie, if for no other reason than it's a very different approach to a biopic (though that's not a good label for what it is).
