I hear the click-clack of your feet on the stairs
I know you're no scare-eyed honey.
There'll be a feast if you just come upstairs
But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime

I can see that you're fifteen years old
No I don't want your I.D.
You look so rest-less and you're so far from home
But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime

Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
Oh yeah, don'tcha scratch like that
Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
Bet your mama don't know you scream like that
I bet your mother don't know you can spit like that.

You look so weird and you're so far from home
But you don't really miss your mother
Don't look so scared I'm no mad-brained bear
But it's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime
Oh, yeah
Woo!

I bet your mama don't know that you scatch like that
I bet she don't know you can bite like that.

You say you got a friend, that she's wilder than you
Why don't you bring her upstairs
If she's so wild then she can join in too
It's no hanging matter
It's no capital crime

Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
Oh yeah, don'tcha scratch like that
Oh yeah, you're a strange stray cat
I bet you mama don't know you can bite like that
I'll bet she never saw you scratch my back

Me too. (And I use those words advisedly)

Though my daughter is in her 30's

The album's original front and back cover art, photographs by Barry Feinstein depicting a bathroom wall covered with graffiti, was rejected by the band's record company, which delayed the album's release for months.

GOOD TUNE!  When people ask me: What is your sign?  I tell them: Food and Fuel next exit!  That bathroom would make me skip an exit!
Tip for those like me that freaking love Stray Cat Blues and wrestle with the (putting it lightly) problematic lyrics constantly: every time I listen, I mentally change the track to be a 20 year old dude singing about a cougar (stray cat on-point), changing "15 years old" to "50", and the lyrics about your mother to be your daughter, etc. Yes, it's dumb and ridiculous, but it makes the song a lot more fun and I can still jam out to the amazing musicianship without (as much) guilt.
When did the album cover change? My copy has a plain cover with Beggers Banquet in cursive.
oh the rapey songs I grew up with. 🙄
Not for nothing, but I'd love to know when was the last time they played this song live.
Johnny Winter does an excellent version. Better than the original in my opinion. In fact, he does a lot of Stones covers well.

What sex, drugs...I'm mean sex, and sex and rock'n'roll....oops, I mean sex, sex and more sex are all about.

Why does 1968 seems so freakin' long ago?
Beggars came out 1968
not sure i want to hear mick and keith bragging about statutory rape.

Leading to conjecture as to which singing Mick was the real singing Mick.  He is indeed much closer to the sound of a stray cat here than, say, Ruby Tuesday.

                                            Lol.

The first Stones album I ever bought on the way home from a Coventry City football match. Of course the record shop has long since gone - as has any semblance of a football team in Coventry.
it took me a long time the get this track. I now love it. Really strong album too.

OH YEAH. This was my favourite song in high school and hearing it again reminds me why I loved it so much.
as Truman Capote once said, "I prefer my Rolling Stones on records"
awesome album when released, still pretty good
Full agreement. I once played in a band that covered this song, and it was one thing to sing the line "I can see you're just 15 years old but I don't want your ID" when we were 20. But at age 40, the thought of Mick and Keef anywhere near my teenage daughter is pretty disturbing.

Here's another song that has me rethinking my aversion to the Stones.
Dirty, just plain dirty. Love it.

This is why I love the Rolling Stones.  Sometimes with a semi-guilty conscience.

Did these lyrics inspire Bill Wyman's relationship?

"On 2 June 1989, aged 52, Wyman married 18-year-old Mandy Smith whom he had been dating since she was 13 and he was 47 years old.

The most bad azz thing the Stones ever did.

what the hell does W have to do with the stones?
ah, the real stones stand up.....{#Bananajam}{#Dancingbanana}{#Nyah}{#Drummer}{#Flamed}{#Yell} remember folks, they were a BLUES BAND............
I apologize.   My remark about the Antichrist was not intended to blow things off track.

The Stones were bad boys, representing all that small-town USA thought was wrong about the 60s and the deep social changes going through the world.  To some people, that meant the Rolling Stones and their style of music were evil.  They were, in some people's opinion, an embodiment of the Antichrist.

Because of that bad reputation, the Stones were not played on the radio, and few of us South Carolina teens even knew they existed at the time.  I was not exposed to them until I went off to school.  To contrast, the Beatles were playing bright, sunny pop tunes at that time; they represented good things in the world.  Beatle tunes were all over the radio.

MY PERSONAL OPINION is that I like this song.  When the Stones decide to play straight-up blues -- without the rock-n-roll influence -- they do pretty well.  When they add the rock-n-roll influence they do spectacularly well.
I really am a sucker for bluesy Stones cuts! Most excellent.

The last time I saw Johnny was four years ago in a tiny bar in Lafayette, LA. He was so debilitated he had to have help to change guitars. Still some of the thunder and lightning there, but I would not have bet he would live another year. My brother idolized him, so I got a table next to the stage. A month later, my brother was dead and Johnny's still kicking. Saw Edgar Winter last year, and he dedicated a song to Johnny "where ever you are, I love you brother". So he may well be back into the bad end of the pool.

His website says he's working on a new recording, and he's supposed to perform three sold out nights in Tokyo starting TONIGHT (4/14/2011). Coming to your neck of the woods in May.

Would there have been a Stevie Ray without Johnny taking the Texas Blues torch from Gatemouth Brown? He's one of the founders, that's beyond question.

Great song from a great album.  Also probably their greatest period.
DIRTY STONES ARE GOOD STONES!

PS
THE GERMAN BEGGAR'S BANQUET COVER IS QUITE DIFFERENT
as much as is the EURO-VERSION of this song!

Oh yeah....that's where I know this from — Soundgarden's version is on SOMMS (limited edition disc that came with Badmotorfinger)
Just remember, Mick — 15 will get you 20.
When Mick and The Rolling Stones were 41 years younger and surrounded by groupies.  Hell, maybe they're still surrounded, I don't know.

This just kicks ASS.
I recall that we were all blown away by Beggars Banquet and wondered how the Stones could top it—and they went ahead and did Let It Bleed. I think this was the same year that Traffic, Green River, Abbey Road, and Led Zepplin II were issued. An onslaught.

Pumpkins and Soundgarden also made great version of this rather early Stones tune!
Rolling Stones - Stray Cat Blues
Muddy Waters - Rock Me
Django Reinhardt - Minor Swing

Is Bill's pick algo this easy or is this pattern a coincedence ?

these are the STONES we wanna hear!
Wonderful "rotzig"...!!!

Nice to see that cover (as with the Blind Faith one a little earlier). I remember when I sent away for it from the UK and pasted it on the US version.

Agreed. This one rocks.
Johnny Winter does an amazing version of this song. He also did an incredible, incredible version of 'Let it Bleed' with a really cool rocking style, just amazing. His style was ballsy, rowdy, ass-kicking, authentic. There aren't too many guitarist/singers that could measure up to Johnny in his prime. I tried to share these cuts with y'all. Uploads by healyf52 Sorry: Johnny Winter - Let It Bleed Sorry: Johnny Winter - Stray Cat Blues Also, the fact that RP doesn't play any of his tunes completely blows my mind, considering how good he's been, pretty much paving the way for other 'white boys' to stand in front of an audience and proclaim themselves 'bad to the bone'. Damn!
