We've got solid-state technology
Tapes on the floor
Some songs we can't afford to play
When we came here today
All I wanted to say
Is how much I miss you
Alcohol and cotton balls
And some drugs
We can afford on the way
When we came here today
We all felt something true
Now I'm red-eyed and blue

Great Album!
This is, initially, reminiscent of the classic Good Technology by the Red Guitars. At least that's interesting and holds the attention, which is rather more than can be said for this dirge. Wilco and out
The reference to "solid-state technology" is a bit of a blast from the past. For younger listeners, this referred, some decades ago, to technology build with transistors rather than vacuum valves, so back in the 60s it was common to see 'solid state' on the front of portable radios. A bit of trivia for youse...

Couldn't place what this tune reminds me of...then I read previous posts....brilliant. "Starting Over" by John Lennon and "Steal Away" by Robbie Dupree. Hilarious. Though I do like this tune.
SOLID SOUND THIS WEEKEND!

Nice Call Bill! Some old School Wilco!!

Great song. Until the whistling at the end. Don't whistle on good songs please. Kazoos too. Just doesn't sound good.
"Being There" defined Wilco and Jeff Tweedy as the leaders is Alt-Country.
As I sit here as a 'Wilco' novice, I look forward to my 'Black Crowes' experience??
This was released in 1996?

That's it! I'm officially a Wilco fan!
I'm going out to get the whole discography this weekend!
Funny thing is at first I thought that it was the Replacements. Hmmm.

Yep. Heavy. Awesome album. Good solo road trip drive soundtrack.
not at night
When this started, I thought "...baby, hang onto me... Wow, I haven't heard Eddie Money in a long time"
I wonder why Wilco changed the lyrics?

Very, very nice.
Even if I totally hear "Steal Away" in the music.
Aye, this is the real stuff. I agree Tweedy is channeling Lennon here to a certain extent, but it is all good. There are much worse artists to be inspired by.
What a fabulous song and one of my favorite albums in my collection.

Why are you people unable to listen to a song without comparing it to every song that's gone before?
It's like some pretentious wine-taster saying they get flavours of honey and vanilla, and scents of rasberry and, I don't know, pineapples and god knows what else! Please.
I think playing the wine-taster card here does you no real good.

So, if someone tastes vanilla, honey, etc. in wine, that makes them pretentious? Boy, are all those winemakers (myself included) going to be disappointed that from now on we'll just have to call it "grape-flavored wine." But we wouldn't want to offend anyone like you, of course. Maybe we should just go to white labels and black generic descriptions on all products. Would that make you happy?
Why can't "us people" listen without comparisons? Because comparisons provide a frame of reference (just as tasting notes do). It's not to say every wine REALLY has blackberry or currant in it, nor that every song sounds like another, but there are only so many ways to ferment grapes and arrange musical notes. So the similarities people hear say, "Hey, do you remember this?" "Yeah, I really liked/hated that!" "Same here, maybe I ought to get/avoid it." Having never heard of a particular artist, the comparison tells me (generally) whether or not I'd like their work. The same thing with wine.
Either way, I challenge you to find a way to critique something without drawing a comparison to something else. Nothing exists purely within a vacuum.
If you don't hear the similarity, or taste the pineapple, don't blame other people. Expand your mind and try new things. You might be surprised at what you find.
Still an excellent tune.
I fell in love with a Internet Radio Station!!!!
Mucho amor!

the Whistling reminds me of that song "it's a great day for a daydream...."
Wilco is Mid-Western musical treasure.
This song is great and the Being There album is nothing less than brilliant - it is filled with one great song after another.

Gotta say, Wilco rarely disappoints. This one's no exception.

Just kidding...great song!
Yay! Haven't heard this one on RP before. Great song, great album, great band. And yes, wish it were followed by "I Got You..."
One of my top 5 albums of the 90's...The Greek Tonight Wheeooow!
Great song but even better when you hear it in the album context - bleeding into the rockin' "I've Got You." I guess I'll just have to hum it to myself after that G-G-Amajor at the end of this...

Anyway, this happens to be one of my favorite Wilco songs. I always whistle along to it when I hear it alone.
